(AP Photo/Geneva Heffernan) DENVER (AP) — Valeri Nichushkin took strides to take his hard-checking, goal-scoring game to another level this season. Same with his life away from the rink, his Colorado Avalanche teammates, coach and GM maintain. Advertisement It was nearly a year ago against the Dallas Stars when Nichushkin was suspended for six months and placed in Stage 3 of the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. The announcement came just before Game 4 of the second-round series, marking the second straight postseason where the right winger from Russia was unavailable because of circumstances away from the ice. Nichushkin and the Avalanche are facing the Stars — the team that drafted him in 2013 — in a first-round series that starts Saturday in Dallas. 'His personal life's in a really good spot,' Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said Friday before the team boarded a plane for Dallas. 'I'm just really happy for him and proud that he put in the work." Added teammate Logan O'Connor: "Anyone that goes through that personal adversity, it's hard not to root for them. The comeback he's had has been remarkable. To play at the level he has, it's definitely something that guys are proud of for him, and we certainly root for him all the time.' Advertisement When in the lineup, the 30-year-old Nichushkin has been a valuable piece for the Avalanche. The team is 224-79-29 all-time when he plays. But he's missed the past two playoff losses for off-the-ice issues. Earlier this week, general manager Chris MacFarland was asked about potential trust issues given what's transpired with Nichushkin. "I've got the utmost confidence and faith in Val,' MacFarland said. 'I look at what he's done on the ice and what he's had to go through, and again, have the utmost faith in him that he's in a great place, and he'll continue to to grind it out here for us and be a good player.' Nichushkin missed the opening 17 games because of the suspension before making his season debut on Nov. 15 against Washington. He's banged up, too, and sidelined for 21 games due to a lower-body injury. Still, he finished with 21 goals and 13 assists in averaging just under 20 minutes of ice time. Advertisement The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Nichushkin is a 'forechecking machine,' according to defenseman Erik Johnson, and contributes on special teams. He had his first regular-season hat trick last month. 'Just a player everyone needs but not everybody has,' Johnson said of Nichushkin, who was an integral part of Colorado winning the Stanley Cup in 2022. 'We're luck to have him.' It was a blow for the Avalanche losing him against the Stars. Colorado went on to lose the series in six games. This after Nichushkin abruptly left the team in a 2023 first-round playoff series against Seattle for what was described as personal reasons. He missed the final five games of that postseason as the Avalanche lost the series 4-3. Advertisement 'He took the right necessary steps to get in a healthy place. We had his back the whole time,' O'Connor said. "He's been awesome. I think he's really improved on his own well-being, and he's opened up more. As a locker room, we maybe weren't doing as good of a job making him feel open before that as well. It's collectively been really healthy this year. You've seen the results on the ice, and we're really proud of him. "It's been a tough journey for him, but we're happy he's at where he's at. He's in a great place.' ___ AP NHL:

(AP Photo/Geneva Heffernan) NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL has set another attendance record and surpassed 23 million fans for the first time. The league on Friday reported an attendance figure of 23,014,458 over the 1,312-game regular season. That represents 96.9% capacity over 32 teams with the Montreal Canadiens making up the biggest share thanks to 41 home sellouts with crowds of more than 21,000. Advertisement It's the third consecutive time the 108-year-old NHL has broken attendance records after 22.4 million fans in 2022-23 and 22.9 million last season. That does not include the successful return of international competition: the 4 Nations Face-Off in Montreal and Boston, which drew an average of more than 19,000 fans a game. Thirty-six venues hosted regular-season games, most notably Wrigley Field for the Winter Classic and Ohio Stadium in Columbus for the league's other outdoor game. The Stadium Series game in Columbus had the biggest crowd of the season, 94,571, the second-largest in NHL history. ___ AP NHL:

(AP Photo/Geneva Heffernan) DENVER (AP) — Nathan MacKinnon's 116 points is tied for the league lead with three games to go in the regular season. That may very well be the total he winds up with, too. The Colorado Avalanche forward will sit out against Vancouver on Thursday night, marking the first game he's missed this season. He may also be sidelined this weekend for the final two regular season games as a way to both rest and heal up for the playoffs. Advertisement Asked if MacKinnon, who has appeared in 209 straight games, was out purely for rest purposes, coach Jared Bednar said, 'he's dealing with something, too. You get to this point in the year, all these guys are dealing with something." It's been a lot of hockey for MacKinnon, who was the MVP in helping Canada win the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. The fast-flying forward has 32 goals and 84 assists this season as he makes a case to win a second straight MVP title. He's tied with Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov for the most points this season. The 29-year-old MacKinnon was the first skater to reach the 30, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 and 110-point marks this season. 'He's such a valuable player,' defenseman Cale Makar said. 'Every single day, what he brings to our team is pretty incredible. In my mind, he's a runaway (MVP winner).' Advertisement MacKinnon isn't the only player sitting out the game against the Canucks. The Avalanche also will be without defensemen Ryan Lindgren (upper body) and Josh Manson (upper body), along with forward Jonathan Drouin (upper body). Meanwhile, up the road in Loveland, Colorado, captain Gabriel Landeskog has joined the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League on a minor league conditioning assignment. He could play with the Eagles on Friday or Saturday — maybe even both — in his comeback bid after nearly three years without playing an NHL game. A knee injury and subsequent surgeries have sidelined Landeskog since he helped the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup in 2022. Landeskog could be activated for Game 1 of Colorado's first-round playoff series if the conditioning assignment and additional practices go well. The Avalanche will enter the postseason as no worse than the Central Division's No. 3 seed. 'The more excited he gets about a return, the more excited I get," Bednar said. "Because I know there's been lots of peaks and valleys. Advertisement 'When you're talking about mental toughness, resilience, the work ethic that it takes to go through what he's gone through, and have all those ups and downs and peaks and valleys along his recovery to get to the point where it's possible he could play, that's pretty exciting.' Landeskog's teammates feel the same way. 'Everybody wants him to be able to come back from this and succeed,' Makar said. 'Everybody's rooting for him in here." ___ AP NHL:

(AP Photo/Geneva Heffernan) DENVER (AP) — Charlie Coyle scored the only goal in the shootout to help the Colorado Avalanche rally for a 3-2 win over the short-handed Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night. Coyle beat Akira Schmid with a shot into the top corner. Scott Wedgewood had 19 saves through overtime, and stopped all three Vegas shots in the shootout. Advertisement Trailing 2-0 in the second, Colorado tied it up with a power-play goal from Valeri Nichushkin that was ruled no-goal but overturned on review, and a score from Jimmy Vesey. It was Colorado's 23rd comeback win of the season. Nathan MacKinnon recorded an assist in extending his home point streak to 26 games. William Karlsson had a short-handed score, his first goal since Dec. 21, for the Golden Knights, while Brayden McNabb added another. The team was missing leading-scorer Jack Eichel (upper body) along with defensemen Nicolas Hague and Alex Pietrangelo (both with an illness). Schmid made 34 saves on a night Vegas was outshot 36-21. It snapped a streak of seven straight games where the Golden Knights limited opponents to 24 shots or fewer.
