Vietnam to introduce measures to cope with US tariffs, trade official says

Yahoo09-07-2025
HANOI (Reuters) -Vietnam will devise measures to improve product quality to cope with potential risks from U.S. tariffs, as it seeks to expand exports to other markets and reduce its reliance on the United States, the country's deputy trade minister said on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade is coordinating with firms to work on the measures, Phan Thi Thang told an investment conference in Hanoi.
The Southeast Asian country reached an agreement with the Trump administration that saw a 20% tariff slapped on its products and a 40% levy on transhipments through Vietnam from third countries.
Thang said the tariffs offer a chance for Vietnam to improve its product quality and diversify its export markets, with a focus on markets it has free trade agreements with.
"With 16 free trade agreements, Vietnam is expanding its export markets to reduce its reliance on the United States market," she said.
Vietnam's gross domestic product grew 7.96% in the second quarter, up from 6.93% in the first quarter, but it remains short of the country's full-year growth target of at least 8%.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said at a separate meeting on Wednesday that reaching that target is a "big challenge."

Thai King Endorses Vitai's Appointment as Bank of Thailand Chief

Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn has endorsed the appointment of Vitai Ratanakorn as the nation's new central bank governor, more than two weeks after the cabinet picked the seasoned banker for the coveted role. The royal endorsement caps a monthslong selection process that has been overshadowed by concerns over government attempts to erode the autonomy of the Bank of Thailand. Vitai is set to take office from Oct. 1, according to a Royal Gazette notification issued Sunday. Incumbent Governor Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput is due to complete his five-year term on Sept. 30.

Indian automaker Tata Motors' quarterly profit plunges as tariffs, slow sales bite

By Chandini Monnappa and Nandan Mandayam (Reuters) -Indian automaker Tata Motors posted a 63% slump in quarterly profit on Friday, its fourth straight quarter of decline, as U.S. tariffs hurt businesses that were already reeling from weak sales. U.S. duties wiped 254 million pounds ($341.33 million) off its quarterly earnings, the company said, adding that the tariffs and its planned model phase-out for its luxury Jaguar Land Rover cars, made predominantly in the United Kingdom, dealt a direct blow to profit and cash flow. However, kept its JLR forecast unchanged, saying a U.S.-UK trade deal signed in May would sharply cut the tariff hit. It had earlier reported a 11% fall in overseas sales at its luxury car unit due to the U.S. export halt and the phase-out of older Jaguar models. Speaking to reporters in a post-earnings call, Chief Financial Officer P.B. Balaji also said that China's ban on rare earth magnets export had not affected the company, and added that it had de-risking plans in place to avoid any impact in the medium term. Last week, rivals Hyundai Motor India and Mahindra & Mahindra had downplayed concerns over the export ban. The magnets are key to EV motors and components in conventional cars such as power windows and speakers. The company reported a profit of 39.24 billion rupees ($447.8 million) in the April-June quarter, down from a restated 105.14 billion rupees a year earlier that includes a 49.75-billion-rupee one-time gain. Excluding the gain, profit was down 30.5%. Quarterly revenue fell 2.5% from a year earlier as sales slowed, mirroring trends at Maruti Suzuki India and Hyundai. Tata Motors expects demand to remain challenging but aims to boost performance as clarity on tariffs emerges and festive demand picks up, Balaji said. The results follow two major developments - Tata Motors' $4.36 billion acquisition of Italian truckmaker Iveco and JLR chief Adrian Mardell's exit. Mardell, who had been with the company for more than three decades, revamped the Jaguar brand, delivered its highest profit in a decade and cut $6.6 billion in debt. Earlier this month, Tata Motors named CFO Balaji as JLR's new CEO. SGX sees 30 potential IPOs in the pipeline

Pol de Win, head of global sales and origination, says a third of these 30 firms are in discussions with SGX RegCo. Some 30 companies are in the pipeline for a potential listing on the Singapore Exchange (SGX), says Pol de Win, head of global sales and origination, though he stopped short of providing a timeline for their debuts. According to de Win, a number of these firms have hired lawyers and advisors for their initial public offering (IPO), and some have already submitted their listing applications. These companies are 'nicely split' between Mainboard and Catalist listings, says de Win at SGX's Aug 8 results briefing for FY2025 ended June 30. Speaking to The Edge Singapore, de Win says a third of these 30 firms are in discussions with Singapore Exchange Regulation (SGX RegCo). While this is one of the required steps before companies go public, this is not necessarily the final step before an IPO, he adds. SGX saw a series of listings starting July, including the debuts of NTT DC REIT, Lum Chang Creations and the secondary listing of China Medical System. However, these IPOs came after the end of FY2025, when SGX recorded six new equity listings, raising $25.7 million. This is down from seven new listings in FY2024, which raised $117 million. Speaking to analysts and the media, de Win says the upcoming public companies come from a 'nicely diverse' list of sectors, much like the recent new listings. Aside from the list of 30 potential companies, 'many more companies are still contemplating and looking at the environment', he adds. De Win says the bourse is confident that the 30 potential IPOs 'is a sustainable number' for the medium term and 'something that we can grow'. That said, 2025 is still a 'transition year', he adds. 'The first half was still pretty quiet and pretty slow. [But] we see global IPO markets reopening. Will we continue to see more activity into the second half? Yes but think about that number as something for the medium term.'
