Want to sell food? Better have a four-star loo, mayor tells JB
The Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) move, which affects 7,435 food premises within the district, is part of a wider campaign to improve public hygiene standards.
Johor Bahru Mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said the council has approved an implementation paper to establish a toilet cleanliness standard, dubbed 'Bersih, Menawan dan Wangi' (BMW) — Clean, Charming, and Fragrant — as a mandatory condition for business licence renewals.
'This campaign, effective this year, encourages premise operators to ensure their toilets are always clean and meet the four-star and above requirement,' he told reporters after the MBJB full council meeting today.
'As a start, this will involve all food premises and restaurants, including 24-hour outlets. Therefore, all operators must ensure their toilets meet or exceed this requirement to be eligible for next year's business licence renewal.'
Mohd Haffiz said the city council's licensing department will provide a self-assessment checklist for operators to complete. MBJB officers will then conduct inspections to verify the rating.
If a business does not meet the four-star requirement, the operator must carry out the necessary cleaning or upgrading works to satisfy the criteria before their licence renewal application can be approved.
'We hope that these additional conditions will empower premise operators to be more responsible in contributing to making Johor Bahru city cleaner,' the mayor said.

Sabah on right track to be leading regional MICE destination, says Liew
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is on the right track to become a leading destination for the Meeting, Incentive Travel, Convention & Exhibition (MICE) industry following aggressive measures undertaken by the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), says Datuk Seri Christina Liew ( pic ). The state Tourism, Culture and Environment said her ministry fully supported SICC organised events that helped drive domestic tourism, empower local entrepreneurs and elevate Sabah's profile in the regional economic landscape. She said this after being briefed by SICC chief executive officer Datuk Dr Rosmawati Lasuki on the SICC's BIGSABAH Sale 2025 event being held from Oct 31-Nov 2, this year. Liew said that Sabah through SICC is strengthening regional ties ahead of the event with expanded international participation. "I understand that the event will feature 500 booths, up from 300 in 2024, and is expected to attract 50,000 visitors," Liew said Liew observed that the BIGSABAH Sale 2025 aims to further strengthen Sabah's positioning as the gateway to East Asean and the Asia Pacific region. Towards this end, for the first time, a business-to-business (B2B) component will also be introduced for participants to create meaningful trade connections and unlock regional opportunities, she added. Rosmawati said the focus was on the 80 million population of the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area) region. "Sabah can serve as a platform for these countries and other regions to promote their products and services. "In this respect, we are stimulating growing international interest by extending invitations to other countries, including China, Singapore, and Taiwan, to take part in this year's event. "Thailand has confirmed participation with 20 booths," she said. Rosmawati said they conducted promotional visits to Brunei and Indonesia, along with outreach efforts across Penang, Kedah, Perlis, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur, to build regional participation and connect businesses to Sabah's growing marketplace. The BIGSABAH Sale will be themed under Gourmet & Home Living and Decor as well as Fashion & Lifestyle (Level 4), which will showcase culture, commerce, cuisine, fashion, and collaboration, Rosmawati added.

PM: 13MP charts course for Malaysia's maritime future with port upgrades, shipping and blue economy push
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — The government will prioritise the growth of strategic industries within a sustainable and competitive blue economy, focusing on integrated fisheries hubs, coastal and maritime tourism, blue bio-based technologies, and the development of a blue economy hub in Sabah. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that for the development of the shipbuilding and ship repair (SBSR) industry, efforts to attract strategic investments will be intensified to expand shipping capacity and upgrade bunkering infrastructure at ports in Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Sabah, and Sarawak. 'This initiative will contribute to Malaysia's target to become a competitive and sustainable regional maritime hub,' he said in his speech on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13th MP) in the Parliament today. The 13MP, themed 'Reshaping Development', outlines Malaysia's five-year development plan for the 2026–2030 period. Anwar added that the initiatives also include the development of more modern, efficient, and sustainable port infrastructure to support low-carbon maritime trade operations. 'This includes the construction of the third terminal at Carey Island, the development of the Westports 2 container terminal, and the expansion of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor,' he said. — Bernama

Fueling the Future: 13MP Focuses On Value Creation To Drive Growth, With RM430 Bln Development Allocation
BUSINESS By Nor Baizura Basri & Kisho Kumari Sucedaram KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which aims to drive sustainable growth based on value creation across all sectors, involves RM611 billion in investments to ensure the success of the five-year plan, with RM430 billion being the government's development allocation. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the 13MP also focuses on artificial intelligence and an emphasis on the 'Made in Malaysia' initiative to position the country as a globally competitive and high-income nation. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the five-year roadmap, which is a continuation of the MADANI Economy policy, aims to boost the country's economic growth -- raising the ceiling, improving the people's standard of living -- raising the floor, and strengthening service delivery towards the best governance. He said this while tabling the 13MP 2026-2030, themed 'Melakar Semula Pembangunan' in the Dewan Rakyat today. 'The national economy cannot rely solely on the production of basic materials in the agricultural, industrial and service sectors. We need to boost economic growth by shifting to value creation in all sectors of the economy. 'In pursuing national development efforts, we can no longer be fixated on narrow measures involving economic growth figures, for example,' he said. According to Anwar, the gross domestic product (GDP) growth and expansion will not mean anything if the people's freedom and right to live with dignity are still oppressed by the shackles of hunger, injustice and marginalisation. He said Malaysia's GDP growth is projected to grow at a rate of 4.5 per cent to 5.5 per cent per year over the five-year period, led by domestic demand, especially private consumption and investment.
