The Open: People only now realise why golf scoring system goes albatross, eagle, birdie, par

Daily Mirror18-07-2025
Golf's historic scoring system has been in place for quite some time, and while for those who play the sport regularly know exactly what's what, it's not so easy for others
Golf enthusiasts and casual spectators frequently encounter terms such as "birdie", "par" and "bogey". The dreaded "double bogey" and "triple bogey" will be regular for the casual player too.

For the pros, "eagles" and the much-vaunted hole in one are far more difficult to come by. Then there's the rarely spotted "condor". Don't expect to see many of those at the 153rd Open Championship. You'll be lucky if you ever see one at all to be honest.

For most, the phrases are well enough known, even if what their scoring actually equates too isn't necessarily. But what do they actually mean? And where do they actually come from?

At the heart of golf scoring is par. It represents the number of shots that, in theory, you should be needing to finish a hole, so long as your play is of a competent standard. Originally borrowed from financial terminology - where "par value" meant face value, par was adopted by golf during the late 1800s.
Around 1870, a golf correspondent employed par to characterise the perfect score at Prestwick. By 1911, the US Golf Association had established uniform distance-based standards: up to 225 yards represented par 3, 225–425 yards par 4, and 426–600 yards par 5. Pretty simple stuff.
Then it gets weird. Like. Rory McIlroy probably doesn't know this stuff weird.

Before the existence of par, golfers battled against a fictional adversary called Colonel Bogey. Yep, seriously. An idea stemming from an 1890s novelty song. Back then, bogey actually represented a decent score for a reasonably skilled player.
But, of course, times change, standards improve, expectations rise. All that. So bogey evolved to signify one stroke over par. And if that's one over, then double bogey is two over, triple bogey three over, so on and so forth.
On the other side comes the much more cheerful "birdie" which, it's claimed, originated in 1899 in at the Atlantic City Country Club. Supposedly one player's impressive shot prompted his companion to exclaim that it was a "bird of a shot." Holing out one stroke under par, it inspired the term birdie, which, by 1913 had made its way to the UK.

Sticking with the bird-theme, eagle came to represent two under par, while three under then took up the moniker of albatross in Britain, emerging from the 1920s. They didn't like that in the US however, so went with "double eagle".
Which doesn't really make sense, because if an eagle is two under, then surely a double eagle would be four, rather than three?

Anyway, continuing with the correct lingo is the exceedingly uncommon condor. Four strokes under par - like a hole in one on a par 5. It is one of golf's rarest ever achievements, with only a handful having ever been recorded - making it one of sport's most extraordinary accomplishments.
Golf's scoring lexicon draws from the worlds of finance, pop culture, and whimsical jargon. To those outside the sport, the system might appear odd, but within golf, these expressions are deeply embedded in its very essence, encapsulating the sport's storied traditions.
But not double eagle. That's just wrong.

Scheffler-McIlroy, Rose-Spaun paired at BMW Championship

August 12 - The top two players in the world will play side by side in the first two rounds of the BMW Championship, as the PGA Tour paired Scottie Scheffler with Rory McIlroy to begin the penultimate tournament of the season. Scheffler and McIlroy are slated to tee off 11:16 a.m. ET on Thursday and 1:38 p.m. on Friday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. They're not only 1-2 in the world rankings, but also in the FedEx Cup race as the season winds down. The duo combined to win three of the four major championships this year and Scheffler is the defending FedEx Cup champion, while McIlroy has won it three times. When Scheffler and McIlroy played together in the first two rounds of the PGA Championship, alongside Xander Schauffele, Scheffler shot 5 under par on his way to capturing the major title, while McIlroy struggled to 1 over par and eked into the weekend. This will also mark McIlroy's first tournament since he tied for seventh at the Open Championship, won by Scheffler. McIlroy skipped the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the playoff opener. There is no 36-hole cut at the second playoff leg in Owings Mills, Md., but only the top 30 in the points standings following Sunday will move on to the Tour Championship next week. Schauffele, 43rd in the standings after an injury-interrupted season, needs a stellar finish to crack the top 30. He'll play his first two rounds with Michael Kim. Other notable pairings include Rickie Fowler with Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas -- Nos. 48 and 49 in the points standings entering the week -- and Englishman Justin Rose with J.J. Spaun. Rose and Spaun went to a playoff at the St. Jude, and Rose prevailed on the third playoff hole to beat the U.S. Open champion. Spaun and Rose sit 3-4 in the season standings. Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, who missed out on that playoff after a late bogey, will play alongside Justin Thomas. --Field Level Media

BMW Championship 2025 betting tips, free bets and latest golf odds

YOU have to wonder what Rory McIlroy was thinking when he saw the first FedEx Cup play-off event go to a play-off - between two men he had beaten in play-offs early this year! McIlroy triumphed over eventual St Jude Championship winner Justin Rose in sudden death in the Masters, a month after taking down last week's runner-up JJ Spaun, in overtime at The Players. Maybe McIlroy will think he kissed a trick by sitting it last week. But coming in fresh, at the BMW Championship, when you know you have already guaranteed a spot in next week's Tour Championship, could work in his favour. I certainly think the 7-1 generally on offer for McIlroy at Caves Valley in Maryland is far more attractive than the 5-2 or thereabouts on offer for world No 1 Scottie Scheffler. The last time the BMW was held at Caves Valley, in 2021, McIlroy finished fourth on 22 under par - eight shots ahead of Scheffler, who could only manage a share of 22nd. Scheffler is a much better player now, of course. He is undoubtedly the best golfer on the planet, but he is not usually at his best in birdie bonanzas. So Rory gets the nod in the battle for the Big Two. BMW Championship 2025 betting tips Patrick Cantlay won that 2021 BMW, but he was a lot more consistent back then. At the moment, whenever he looks like recapturing the form that took him to third in the world rankings, he throws in a missed cut. That can't happen this week, as all 49 starters - Sepp Straka is missing because of a family problem - are guaranteed four rounds. At around 25-1, it could be worth taking a chance on Cantlay making course knowledge count, especially after he posted a top ten finish at the St Jude - his first since May. Sungjae Im also played well here four years ago to finish a place in front of McIlroy. He needs a good week to hold onto a top 30 spot and make it through to the Tour Championship. At 66-1, he represents decent each way value. Sam Burns, who was eighth here in 2021, is in the same boat as Im, at 24th in the current FedEx rankings, one place above the Korean. A best-priced 40-1 also appeals each way. Rickie Fowler 's form has taken an upturn, and he is also 66-1 in places, while Si Woo Kim shot four rounds in the 60s at the St Jude. He deserves a second look at around 70-1. ********************************************************** LIV Golf Indianapolis 2025 betting tips The LIV circuit moves on to Indianapolis for the second leg of a three week run in the States. Dean Burmester did the business for us in Chicago at 33-1. He has only been cut to 25-1 for that victory, and it could be worth re-investing some of last week's returns. Joaquin Niemann and Jon Rahm are the only players who can win the season-long LIV individual title, with defending champion Rahm the bookies favourite this week at around 4-1. Too short for me, despite the Spaniard's incredible consistency, which included a play-off defeat to Burmester in Chicago. The third player involved in that shoot-out, Jose Luis Ballester, will be buzzing after doing something noteworthy other than taking a leak in Rae's Creek - something the young Spaniard notoriously did at this year's Masters. Ballester was regarded as one of the most exciting amateur talents to emerge for years before joining LIV a few months ago. At 50-1, and higher, it is worth seeing if that performance last week was more than an early flash in the pan. And the in-form Carlos Ortiz is another man worth having on your side, especially at the 25-1 available in a few places. ********************************************************** DP World Tour betting tips The DP World Tour is still stuck in second gear - at least as far as star power is concerned - after a brief spell in the limelight at the Renaissance Club and Portrush. Local stars Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard dominate the market for the Danish Championship - along with compatriot Rasmus Neergaard -Petersen. But I have been impressed recently with Norway's Kristoffer Reitan - a 20-1 shot - while Dutchman Daan Huizing looked good for three rounds at the Nexo Championship last week. At 250-1, it is worth seeing whether he can keep it going for 72 holes this week. 2025 Ryder Cup: The Team Europe state of play and predicting Luke Donald's panel at Bethpage Black

It's been a fine 2025 for the Europeans, with Rory McIlroy's Masters victory and career Grand Slam a standout moment, while Justin Rose outduelled JJ Spaun in a captivating Play-Off to win the FedEx St Jude Championship, although Tommy Fleetwood again suffered heartache in that event and at the Travelers Championship to ensure he remains the nearly man on the PGA Tour.
