Diamondbacks recall Saalfrank, whose 1-year suspension for betting on baseball ended June 5

SAN DIEGO (AP) —
The Arizona Diamondbacks have recalled left-handed reliever Andrew Saalfrank, who was one of four players whose one-year suspensions for betting on baseball ended on June 5.
Saalfrank's next game will be his first since April 29, 2024, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He appeared in two games with Arizona last year.
He was recalled Wednesday from Triple-A Reno, where he went 0-2 with two saves and a 7.15 ERA. He struck out 14 in 11 1/3 innings.
The players violated Major League Rule 21, which is posted in every clubhouse. They were handed mandatory one-year suspensions for betting on games in which they did not participate. If they had bet on any games they attended in person — even if they didn't play — they would have been banned for life.

Yankees unsure of the severity of All-Star Max Fried's blister on index finger

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was unsure of the severity of Max Fried's blister on his left index finger, a day after the All-Star left-hander left his start after three innings. 'It's just that (a blister),' Boone said before the Yankees faced the Cubs on Sunday. 'So he'll be kind of leaning into all the modalities and all of the tricks that you try and do to deal with blisters. Then we'll see how it lines up for what we want to line them up coming out of the break, based on just how that's recovered.' Fried allowed four runs — three earned — six hits and a season-high three walks in his shortest start since signing a n eight-year, $218 million contract with the Yankees in December. Nine of 18 hitters reached base, Fried threw only 39 of 73 pitches for strikes and fell behind with first-pitch balls to nine batters. The three-time All-Star felt the blister on his 72nd pitch while facing Jon Berti and ended his outing by getting the infielder on a force out. 'Every case is it's own thing,' Fried said Saturday. 'Definitely didn't want to do too much where I wanted to catch it, hopefully before it became a real big, big deal. It definitely was uncomfortable enough to the point where I didn't want to risk more and it was going to affect my pitches. So, yeah, just the next couple of days are going to be big in just being able to evaluate on how long I need.' He made four trips to the injured list because of blisters on that finger during his time with the Atlanta Braves. He went 23 days between starts in 2018, 12 days each in 2019 and 2021 and 18 in 2023, including a gap between the regular season and playoffs. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Fried is 11-3 with a 2.43 ERA and become the Yankees ace after Gerrit Cole needed Tommy John surgery. He was 9-2 with a 1.89 ERA in 15 starts through June 15, but has a 4.33 ERA in his past four outings. Fried was selected to the AL All-Star team before getting replaced on the roster by Carlos Rodón, who pitched eight innings in Friday's 11-0 win. Fried will attend the festivities in Atlanta and the Yankees may start him in a three-game series at AL East-leading Toronto on July 21-23 after opening the second half by visiting the Braves. ___ AP MLB:

Nolan Siegel sidelined with concussion a day after crash at Iowa Speedway

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — IndyCar driver Nolan Siegel was not cleared to race Sunday at Iowa Speedway because of a mild concussion suffered in a crash one day earlier. The 20-year-old Arrow McLaren driver crashed in the first race of Iowa's two-day IndyCar doubleheader. Arrow McLaren teammate Pato O'Ward won Saturday's race for his first win of the season, as well as the first for McLaren this year and first for Chevrolet. McLaren chose not to run the No. 6 Chevrolet that Siegel qualified fifth for Sunday. The team said Siegel will continue to be evaluated ahead of next weekend's race in Toronto. 'There's no place I'd rather be than out there driving today, especially from one of my best starting positions of the season,' Siegel said. 'I know I'm in good hands with the IndyCar medical team and thank them for the great care they provide us drivers.' ___ AP auto racing:

Astros' Isaac Paredes will miss the All-Star Game because of a family matter

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes has dropped out of next week's All-Star Game to attend to a family matter. Paredes was added to the roster Wednesday after Cleveland's José Ramírez opted out to rest a nagging Achilles tendon injury. Paredes was in the Astros' lineup at designated hitter Sunday for the finale of a series against the Texas Rangers and manager Joe Espada said he wouldn't miss any time after the break because of the issue. 'Oh yeah, he'll be back,' Espada said. 'He just needs to go and spend some time and take care of some family matters, but … he's fine.' It was the second straight season Paredes had been named an All-Star. The 26-year-old is in his first season with the Astros after a trade from the Cubs. He entered Sunday hitting .254 with 19 homers and 49 RBIs. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP MLB:
