The Welsh Government is taking action to standardise the speed limits on a portion of the A470 to address an existing 'anomaly'. On entering Blaenau Ffestiniog from the Crimea Pass, the targeted stretch currently has a 40mph limit, which is planned to be reduced to 30mph, as detailed in the map provided.
An anomaly with the current speed limit near Blaenau Ffestiniog has been flagged by officials, leading to plans to implement a new 30mph zone along a section of the major A470 road.
Additionally, a £25 million investment to repair roads across Wales, including the A470 which links Llandudno and Cardiff, was announced by the Welsh Government this week. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here
Officials elaborated on the need for modification in an announcement, explaining: "The proposed Order is necessary to remove an anomaly that currently exists with the current speed limit at this location. The effect of the proposed Order will be to introduce a 40mph and 30mph speed limit on the relevant length of the A470 trunk road between Talwaenydd and Rhiwbryfdir, Gwynedd, for the installation of a new uncontrolled pedestrian and cyclist crossing refuge island."
They further disclosed their intentions, citing the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984: "The Welsh Ministers propose to make an Order in exercise of their powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. The A470 Trunk Road (North of Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd) (40mph Speed Limit) Order 2008 will be revoked by the proposed Order.", reports North Wales Live.
A roughly one-kilometre stretch is slated for the speed reduction from 40mph to 30mph, commencing just past the road leading to Tal-y-Waenydd/Tai Oakeley Terrace and continuing down to the Pant yr Afon Hydro Power Station.

The Welsh Government is pouring funds into 22 projects to bolster Wales' strategic road network, with plans to enhance over 100km of tarmac and tackle the scourge of around 30,000 potholes, ensuring future road resilience.
This comes on top of a colossal effort to mend tens of thousands more potholes through a local government borrowing initiative unveiled in March. This scheme grants councils access to £120m to expedite local road repairs.
Already in motion, the programme encompasses two bridge refurbishments addressing seven bridges, 18 resurfacing endeavours, and a pair of footway upgrades benefitting 10 community spots across Wales.
Transport and North Wales Cabinet Secretary Ken Skates has declared: "Fixing our roads is a key priority. The comprehensive programme of works that are being delivered as part of our £25m investment will help improve the future resilience of our strategic roads network and prevent potholes.

"I am pleased to hear that some of this work has already started with more to follow in the coming months. I look forward to seeing some of the end results."

How to check using a number plate checker if the £150 DVLA car tax increase affects you
Motorists can use a number plate checker tool to see if they will be affected by the DVLA's £150 car tax increase. The AA is warning drivers that the change could have a significant impact on many people's finances. For many drivers, especially those with older fuel-efficient cars, the change in VED could lead to a steep rise in their car tax bill. Experts warn that vehicles registered between 2001 and 2017, which are still taxed under the older CO2-based system, are most at risk for the increase. According to roadside assistance expert Jack Cousens, the changes to Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) could be a "major financial shock" for millions of car owners whose vehicles are still paying VED under the old system. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here He said: "VED changes and future increases threaten a major financial shock to the finances of millions of car owners whose vehicles are still paying VED under the 2001-2017 CO2-banded system." Cousens highlighted the impact on drivers with older, eco-friendly models, saying: "For those with ageing low-CO2 small family and city cars, the transition to the current standard VED rate could see a hike of £150 or more a year on their motoring tax. "With the average car currently paying £436.84 in fuel duty a year – or £524.21 when VAT is added at the pump – a £150 increase in the VED they will pay represents a 34% hike on top of what they are already paying in fuel duty." Drivers can use WeBuyAnyCar's free online service to quickly find out details about their vehicle, including its engine size, power output, and CO2 emissions. The car valuation provider details: "What's more, if you run the vehicle's plate number through our reg plate checker, we can provide you with the following information in an instant: Year and registration date, Make, model, colour, fuel and transmission type, Engine size (cc), power (kw) and CO2 (g/km), Whether the vehicle is imported," reports the Liverpool Echo. It will also offer insights into "the number of previous keepers – and the date ownership was transferred to the current keeper," plus "tax status, tax due date and MOT history." Typically, your car's registration number can be found on the number plates at the front and back of the vehicle. It can also be located in the vehicle's V5C logbook. The advice for potential buyers of used cars is to note down the registration number and use a licence plate check tool. It said: "If you are thinking about buying a used car, we would recommend making a note of the registration number and running it through our licence plate check tool. This will help to ensure everything meets with your expectations."

Elon Musk backs away from making EVs in India as minister says Tesla ‘not interested'
Tesla is no longer expected to manufacture electric vehicles in India despite government incentives, according to the country's heavy industries minister HD Kumaraswamy. Mr Kumaraswamy said that Tesla has not shown interest in the Modi government's new EV manufacturing scheme, and is instead looking to open two retail showrooms. The Indian government issued formal guidelines for its EV policy, offering reduced import duties to foreign carmakers committing to invest at least $500m and start local production within three years, a policy initially designed to attract Tesla. Tesla had participated in early discussions but reportedly did not join later rounds, with previous plans being shelved in 2022 after India insisted on local manufacturing. Analysts suggest that India's EV market may not be ready for Tesla's premium models, citing low EV sales and cheaper domestic alternatives.
