Geetha Kailasam Interview: The market is built in such a way that a film attracts audiences only when big names are attached to it

Before New York, Angammal was screened at the MAMI Film Festival, Mumbai, and the International Film Festival Kerala. When asked about the importance of awards and festivals, especially for a film like Angammal, Geetha shares, 'The market is built in such a way that a film attracts audiences only when big names are attached to it. Even for a film that has been screened at a festival, there are a lot of preconceived notions, where people wonder if they will be bored with the film or if it will actually be enjoyable.' When asked who should take up the mantle of providing support for films like Angammal, Geetha says, 'The producers and the distributors need to provide support for artistic films to be released. The theatres can be filled only to a point; beyond that, the audience will always prefer OTT. For theatres to be full, the audience needs to be familiar with the actor's work.'

‘Angammal', ‘Bad Girl' and other Tamil titles to shine at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025

The upcoming edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is all set to feature a stellar line-up of Tamil titles, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. The line-up is led by Vipin Radhakrishnan's film Angammal, starring Geetha Kailasam, Saran, and Thendral Raghunathan. The stirring film, set in a remote 1990s Tamil Nadu village, examines the discomfort and chaos that arises when a son tries to 'modernise' his mother's traditional ways to avoid social embarrassment. What begins as a simple act spirals into a sharp commentary on shame, culture, and control. The film has been selected for Best Indie Film, Best Actress and Best Director. Then comes the Vetri Maaran-produced Bad Girl, which has already created ripples across Tamil Nadu. The coming-of-age feature directed by Varsha Bharath follows Ramya (Anjali Sivaraman) on a chaotic journey from adolescence to adulthood. Caught between overbearing parents, social expectations, unrequited crushes, and internal chaos, Ramya's story resonates with the realities of many young Indian women navigating identity, love, and mental health. The film has been nominated for Best Actress and Best Director. A tribute to India's single-screen theatres and the communal movie-watching culture they nurtured, the film gently examines a fading cinematic heritage through memory, nostalgia, and resistance to erasure. Meanwhile, all the way from France comes actor-director Lawrence Valin's Tamil political drama, Little Jaffna, starring Valin, Vela Ramamoorthy and Radikaa Sarathkumar. 'The film follows Michael, a police officer tasked with infiltrating a Tamil separatist group in Paris. As he immerses himself in their world, he begins to empathise with the very people he was meant to expose, blurring the lines between duty, truth, and belonging,' reads a press release. The Tamil slate also includes the tender short film, Farewell, coming from the UK by Soham Kundu, starring Samir Mahat and Vishnu Krishnan. 'In a single day, two friends—one heartbroken, the other on the verge of marriage—confront grief, nostalgia, and their tangled past in a quiet yet emotionally resonant journey,' reads the logline. The 2025 edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) will be held from August 14 to 24.

MAMI Mumbai Film Festival Cancelled. Hansal Mehta Calls It "Cruel Irony"

The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, a prominent platform for Indian and international cinema, has been cancelled for 2025. The organisers made the announcement in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta expressed his disappointment over the festival's cancellation. Hansal Mehta shared the MAMI organisers' official statement on the matter on Instagram, which read, "This is to inform you that the 2025 edition of MAMI Mumbai Film Festival will not take place as we are in the process of revamping the festival with a dynamic vision and a new team to ensure that the festival returns as a premier showcase for the best of independent, regional and classic cinema from Indian and around the world." It added, "We are working diligently to reschedule the festival and will announce the new dates for the 2026 edition as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and support." Hansal Mehta strongly criticised the MAMI Film Festival's cancellation. In the caption, the filmmaker wrote, "It's a cruel irony that Mumbai draped in the glitz of being India's financial and cinematic capital cannot keep alive a film festival of its own. Abandoned by the self-appointed gatekeepers of cinema who chased shinier stages and safer bets it was left in the hands of a few passionate believers to run on pure faith. And now that fragile flame has been snuffed out." He added, "No ceremony. No outrage. Just a slow, silent forgetting. What should have been a cultural cornerstone has been reduced to a footnote - another casualty of apathy dressed as progress." What a loss for the city and a shame for us as an industry." The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival was launched in 1997 by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), a public trust based in the city. Over the years, stars like Aamir Khan made financial contributions to the festival, while celebrities like Priyanka Chopra and Kiran Rao served as Chairpersons of the event. In 2023, the festival was sponsored by Jio, but they opted out as title sponsor last year. The 2024 edition of the event was substantially smaller than prior editions.
