Award-winning Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado dies at age 81, his institute says

Washington Post23-05-2025

SAO PAULO — Brazilian photographer and environmentalist Sebastião Salgado, known for his award-winning images of nature and humanity, has died at age 81.
Instituto Terra, which was founded by him and his wife, confirmed the information Friday, but did not provide more details on the circumstances of Salgado's death or where it took place.
'Sebastião was more than one of the best photographers of our time,' Instituto Terra said in a statement. 'His lense revealed the world and its contradictions; his life, (brought) the power of transformative action.'
Salgado's life and work were portrayed in the documentary film 'The Salt of the Earth' (2014), co-directed by Wim Wenders and his son, Juliano Ribeiro Salgado.
Salgado lived in Paris for many years and started to fully dedicate his time to photography in 1973, years after his economy degree.
His style is marked by black-and-white imagery, rich tonality, and emotionally-charged scenarios. Impoverished communities were among his main interests.
Among his main works are the recent series 'Amazonia;' 'Workers' which shows manual labor around the world; and 'Exodus' (also known as 'Migrations' or 'Sahel') which documents people in transit, including refugees and slum residents.
Salgado and his wife, Lélia Wanick Salgado, founded Amazonas Images, an agency that exclusively handles his work.

🎥 Neymar sent off in possible Santos farewell, silly red card

In what could be his last game for his home club FC Santos, Neymar certainly didn't cover himself in glory and received a truly curious yellow card. Due to injury, it was only his second start since his return in January. This was also over after 76 minutes because the Brazilian scored a goal in the style of the Hand of God. Advertisement The already warned superstar let himself be carried away with this action, but apparently forgot that, unlike Diego Maradona, he would be exposed by about 100 camera angles during his cheating action. Neymar quickly became the laughing stock on the net, instead of the heroic goal scorer of his team. Santos lost the duel against Botafogo 1-0 with a man down and is currently in a relegation spot after eleven matchdays. Since Neymar's contract expires on June 30 and the Brazilian league is on hold due to the Club World Cup until mid-July, this inglorious action could actually have been his last for Santos. The signs are currently pointing to another club change. Advertisement This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. 'My dad was in the band for years and years and I wanted to join. We have some really great crowds here.' The Brazil Concert Band plays all throughout the summer and will wrap up at the end of August. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. How to watch the Green Games Showcase at Summer Game Fest 2025

This year's Summer Game Fest will feature a new showcase for games that highlight environmental causes and make direct contributions to real-world sustainability efforts. The Green Games Showcase, led by the not-for-profit PlanetPlay, will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 4:00PM ET (1:00PM PT) and streamed live on YouTube. PlanetPlay says the event will be "a celebration of game studios that have raised over $100,000 for certified environmental projects around the world." Those projects so far include Abundant Village, a regenerative garden project in South Africa; the carbon forestry project WithOneSeed in Timor-Leste; The Hongera Clean Cookstove project in Kenya; and The Teeny Tiny Truth, which aims to reduce microplastics in New Zealand's fresh water systems. The Green Games Showcase is one of several streams that are set to take place between Summer Game Fest Live on Friday and the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday. Be sure to also check out Day of the Devs, Devolver Direct, Wholesome Direct, the Women-Led Games Showcase, the Latin American Game Showcase and the Southeast Asian Games Showcase. It'll all wrap up with a Death Stranding 2: On the Beach premiere event, where you can get an early look at the game ahead of its release on June 26.
