Hip surgery behind him, Travis Sykora sees what's possible

Washington Post26-02-2025
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Washington Nationals prospect Travis Sykora was already one of the best pitchers in minor league baseball last year. That was, Sykora told reporters Wednesday, without being able to pitch at full throttle.
Last year, when Sykora pitched, he felt a bit of a pinch in his back hip. The 6-foot-6 right-hander compensated by altering his mechanics. His fastball only sat in the mid-90s. He and the coaching staff worked to address the issue, but it didn't feel like an injury to Sykora. As Sykora put it, 'We're not human MRI machines.' So this offseason, they took a look. He underwent hip surgery shortly thereafter.

Philadelphia Eagles injury updates ahead of joint practice with the Cleveland Browns

Who returned to practice, and who are dealing with new injuries ahead of the Eagles joint practices with the Browns and preseason Week 2 The Eagles are holding a light practice on Tuesday, just hours before two days of joint practice sessions with the Cleveland Browns at the NovaCare Complex. Philadelphia has the NFL's best offensive line, and that depth will be tested with Landon Dickerson nursing a meniscus injury. With the Wednesday morning session set to begin, we're looking at who returned to practice, and who is dealing with new injuries ahead of the Eagles' joint practices with the Browns and preseason Week 2 Out Elijah Cooks - shoulder Cooks had to leave the team's preseason opener against the Bengals on a cart after being injured. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Cooks suffered a shoulder injury and had an MRI on Friday to determine the extent of the injury. Kenyon Green - shoulder Green has a shoulder injury that is likely to end his preseason, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Green is viewed as week to week. Charley Hughlett - neck The Eagles' long snapper is healthy and returned to practice on Tuesday. Montrell Johnson - hamstring Johnson is working through a hamstring injury, which forced him to observe Thursday's preseason opener against the Bengals from the sidelines. He signed with the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in late April, so an extended absence hurts his chances of making the 53-man roster at the end of training camp. Byron Young - groin Young has been battling a groin injury, but returned to practice. LIMITED Zack Baun - back Baun has been listed as limited after missing seven practices with a back injury. He hasn't participated in team drills. But has been in shoulder pads. AJ Brown - hamstring Brown left practice a week ago Friday with a hamstring injury and missed four practices as well as the preseason opener vs. the Bengals.

Astros fans turn on Alex Bregman in Houston return with Red Sox

No love for a familiar face. The Houston Astros did not fully welcome back Alex Bregman to Daikin Park as the former homegrown third baseman and two-time World Series winner was showered with boos in his second plate appearance Monday night. Advertisement Bregman received a warm welcome initially for his first game back in Houston, as the Astros prepared a video tribute for a key piece of their title teams who also finished second in AL MVP voting in 2019. That affection quickly turned sour when Bregman took former teammate Cristian Javier deep to left field in the first inning for a two-run home run. Bregman heard some boos from fans as he rounded the bases with the Red Sox taking a 2-0 lead. 3 Alex Bregman received plenty of love during a video tribute before things turned sour. 'Interesting reaction the second time around for Alex Bregman,' play-by-play analyst Todd Kalas said on the Space City Home Network. 3 Alex Bregman celebrates hitting a home run against his former team. Pretty good crowd tonight to watch Bregman coming back, and Carlos Correa, maybe waiting for a ground ball to third base. That would be kind of interesting to write into the scorebook.' Bregman signed a three-year contract worth $120 million as the Red Sox decided to bring in Bregman and eventually trade away Rafael Devers at the relationship with their longtime third baseman soured over a position change brought on by Bregman's signing. 3 Alex Bregman was viciously booed by his former fans. All-star closer Josh Hader did not close due to shoulder discomfort and was being sent for an MRI exam. 49ers comment on severity of Jauan Jennings' calf injury

San Francisco fans are anxious to get the news that fifth-year pro Jauan Jennings is back working in practice and seriously ramping up his return for the 2025 NFL season. But, 49ers fans will have to wait longer for that bit of good news. And until he's back suited up and catching the football, there will be a faction of the fan base that wonders if there's more to the story. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked on Monday if there is any concern from the coaching staff regarding the severity of Jennings' calf injury and if it could play out similarly to Christian McCaffrey's calf injury and Achilles tendonitis that morphed into much worse. "No. McCaffrey's was Achilles Tendonitis that had been bothering him for a while and never got better. Jauan is a calf that he missed all last training camp with. It is something that we don't think will be too serious, but it's bothering him now. Depending on how much he misses, I mean, I always want guys out there. It helps him, it helps the team. But, Jauan was alright last year too missing some time," Shanahan said. It's in line with the tone that Shanahan struck following the 49ers' preseason opener against the Denver Broncos on Saturday night. Shanahan was asked point blank if Jennings' absence is more about securing a new contract. "No, not at all. And this is actually why Jauan missed OTAs is because of his calf. It's the same injury he had last year during training camp, which made him miss a couple weeks during training camp last year. "We didn't get him until the end of training camp last year and it's the same thing on the MRI and it's the same thing he's going through. But, hopefully we'll get him back sooner than later," Shanahan said. Jennings led all 49ers wide receivers in receiving yardage last season with 975 yards on 77 catches with six touchdown grabs. As he enters the final year of his current deal, Jennings has reportedly requested a new contract from the 49ers this offseason.
