Greece strengthens military with 16 anti-ship missiles from France

Saudi Gazette15-04-2025

ATHENS — Greece has signed a new defense agreement with France on Monday to acquire 16 Exocet anti-ship missiles, the latest in a series of arms purchases aimed at enhancing the country's military capabilities.
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias signed the deal in Athens on Monday alongside his French counterpart, Sébastien Lecornu, during his official visit to the Greek capital.
While the ministers did not disclose the value of the contract, it marks a continuation of Greece's growing defense ties with France.
'Greece does not threaten, but is threatened,' Dendias said in a joint statement to the press, referring to Greece's fraught relationship with Turkey, with whom it has long-standing disputes over territorial boundaries in the Aegean Sea and the eastern Mediterranean.
The two NATO allies have come close to military conflict several times in recent decades.
The missile acquisition adds to Greece's broader modernization program, which was launched following years of defense spending cuts during the 2010–2018 financial crisis.Previous procurements from France include 24 Rafale fighter jets and three Belharra-class frigates. Dendias noted that discussions are ongoing regarding the potential addition of a fourth frigate, while France is also supplying NH-90 military helicopters.Athens plans to invest €25 billion over the next decade to modernize its armed forces and adapt to new forms of high-tech warfare.Speaking in parliament earlier this month, Dendias outlined a shift away from conventional systems toward a more agile and technologically advanced military model — incorporating AI-powered missile networks, drones and mobile command units. The defense overhaul spans all branches of the armed forces and reflects Greece's strategic alignment with key partners, including France, Israel and the US. — Euronews

France reaffirms plan to recognize Palestinian state

PARIS — French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Friday reiterated France's commitment to recognizing the State of Palestine, declaring that recent developments in the Middle East would not alter the country's long-standing position. 'France will uphold the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination by recognizing the State of Palestine,' Barrot said during his address at the civil society event Paris Call for the Two-State Solution, Peace and Regional Security, held as part of the Paris Peace Forum. 'I say it again here: whatever the recent developments in the region, France is determined to do so,' he emphasized. Barrot warned that it is time to push forward a political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, adding that the issue would take center stage at the upcoming UN-backed conference on the two-state solution, which France and Saudi Arabia are set to co-host in New York later this month. 'This political solution involves the creation of a viable Palestinian state with renewed governance and strong security guarantees for both Israelis and Palestinians,' he said. He also urged for 'courage' and 'strong mobilization' from the international community to forge a path toward peace. Barrot renewed France's call for an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, and the massive, unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza. 'The two-state solution, to which we remain firmly committed — a condition for peace and security in the region, and a requirement under international law — is now facing existential threats,' Barrot said, citing the expansion of settlements, the collapse of the peace process, and deepening hostilities. He concluded by acknowledging the immense human toll in Gaza. 'Too many civilians are paying the price for this war that has gone on for far too long. We owe them our compassion, and every minute should be dedicated to achieving a ceasefire.' — Agencies

Macron Announces Postponement of UN Conference on Palestinian Statehood

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that the United Nations conference on Palestinian statehood has been postponed. The conference, co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia, aimed at promoting a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. The postponement follows Israel's recent military actions against Iran, which complicate logistics for regional attendees. On Friday, Israel launched extensive airstrikes across Iran, targeting critical nuclear sites, which resulted in the deaths of high-ranking military commanders and nuclear scientists. This attack marks the most significant direct confrontation between Israel and Iran to date. Iran, which openly seeks Israel's destruction, continues to deny any intentions of acquiring nuclear weapons. Macron's Commitment to the Two-State Solution Despite the postponement, Macron emphasized that this setback will not diminish the commitment to the two-state solution, stating, 'Whatever the circumstances, I have stated my determination to recognize the State of Palestine.' While Macron did not directly link the postponement to Israel's strikes on Iran, he noted that regional leaders cannot attend due to security concerns. He questioned the conference's significance if key leaders remain unable to participate and reiterated the importance of holding the gathering as soon as possible. Earlier this week, the Trump administration sent a diplomatic cable to discourage global attendance at the conference. This cable warned of potential consequences for countries that took measures against Israel. Such pressure complicates Macron's potential decision to recognize a Palestinian state, which Israel opposes. Macron's desire is to create a collective momentum for recognizing Palestinian statehood. Diplomats believe that a united front could strengthen the movement, which has often been led by smaller nations critical of Israel. Macron's position has evolved amid Israel's intensified military actions in Gaza. Aiming for Peace Amidst Conflict The French-Saudi conference was set to begin on Tuesday at the UN headquarters in New York, with the aim to address the ongoing peace deadlock following the 7 October, 2023, Hamas's attack. The conference sought to outline a new roadmap for Palestinian statehood while offering Israel enhanced security guarantees and pathways for normalization with Arab nations. However, Israel continues to reject the notion of Palestinian statehood, and US opposition has intensified under the Trump administration. The future of the conference remains uncertain, but Macron's commitment to the two-state solution persists amid these challenges. Short link : Post Views: 2
