Five games that will decide if Dabo Swinney, Clemson return to College Football Playoff
CLEMSON — Clemson returned to the College Football Playoff in 2024 for the first time in three seasons. The next step will be reaching its first national championship game since the 2019 season.
The Tigers made the CFP after winning the ACC championship against SMU. They earned the No. 12 seed and lost to No. 5 Texas in the first round 38-24.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney's team returns a wealth of experienced starters, including quarterback Cade Klubnik, and it added new defensive coordinator Tom Allen for 2025.
ESPN's Football Power Index projects Clemson will win nine or 10 regular-season games, with a 34% chance to win the conference; a 47.3% chance to make the CFP; a 6.8% chance to make the national championship; and a 2.8% chance to win it all.
Here's a look at which games could be the difference between making and missing the College Football Playoff in Swinney's 18th season.
Clemson football schedule 2025: Expected results
Before getting into the key games, here are the expected results for Clemson.

The Tigers should defeat Troy, a Group of Five program, and Furman, an in-state FCS school. They will face eight conference opponents and should defeat Syracuse, North Carolina, Boston College and Duke. If they lose any of those games, the margin of error becomes slimmer.
A matchup that just missed the cut of being key-game consideration is Clemson vs. Florida State on Nov. 8. The Seminoles should be much improved after their disastrous 2024 season (last in the ACC), but Clemson likely will be able to handle them with relative ease.

Clemson vs. LSU on Aug. 30
This game (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC) is one of the marquee matchups of Week 1. It will be a rematch of the 2020 national championship game, which LSU won 42-25, and a battle between top-10 teams as both feature prominent coaches, Swinney and Brian Kelly, and quarterbacks who could be first-round selections in the 2026 NFL Draft: Klubnik and Garrett Nussmeier.

This game could be a résumé booster if they need to get an at-large bid for the CFP. Each also is looking to earn a Week 1 win for the first time in years. Clemson has not won a season-opening game since 2022; LSU has not won one since 2019. DraftKings Sportsbook has Clemson as a 3-point favorite.
Clemson at Georgia Tech on Sept. 13
The Yellow Jackets are primed for a leap in Brent Key's third full season as a coach. They showed fight despite their 7-6 record in 2024, including their eight-overtime loss to Georgia to close the regular season. They also return sixth-year quarterback Haynes King.
It is the Tigers' first time at Georgia Tech since 2020. They have won the past nine matchups, and this will be both teams' first conference game. The result will set the tone for how it will perform in ACC play.
Clemson vs. SMU on Oct. 18
Clemson will face SMU in a rematch of last year's ACC championship. The Tigers won 34-31 on Nolan Hauser's 56-yard field goal.

ESPN's FPI projects the Mustangs as the third-best team in the conference in 2025, predicting them to win eight or nine games, with a 10.8% chance to win the ACC. They lost key contributors from their roster but return quarterback Kevin Jennings, who threw for 304 yards, three touchdowns and one interception against Clemson in the ACC title game.
Clemson at Louisville on Nov. 14
Coach Jeff Brohm's team nearly ruined Clemson's CFP chances last season after it beat the Tigers 33-21 for the first time ever. The Cardinals lost quarterback Tyler Shough but added Southern California transfer Miller Moss to replace him and retained experienced players.
This game is on a Friday and is the Tigers' final regular-season ACC matchup (with South Carolina and Furman after that). They are 4-0 in road games at Louisville, including a 30-24 win in their last game in 2021. They must avoid another mishap in their bid to make the conference championship game.
Clemson at South Carolina on Nov. 29
The Palmetto Bowl will take center stage in Columbia, South Carolina. The Gamecocks shocked Clemson last year, winning 17-14 behind quarterback LaNorris Sellers' late-game heroics. He returns for a potential final showdown against Klubnik.

South Carolina is looking for its first CFP bid, and a win against Clemson will boost its résumé. Still, Clemson has won each of its past five road games at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Athlon Sports ranks Notre Dame secondary third nationally
Athlon Sports ranks Notre Dame secondary third nationally Notre Dame is expected to have one of the top secondaries in college football in 2025. Athlon Sports ranks them near the top returning groups in the country! #GoIrish — Bryan Driskell (@CoachD178) June 14, 2025 Another national publication is bullish on Notre Dame's secondary heading into the season. Pro Football Focus ranked the Fighting Irish No. 3 behind Texas and Alabama in its top-10 secondaries, and Athlon Sports did the same. Even with All-American Xavier Watts and Benjamin Morrison now in the NFL, standouts such as cornerbacks Leonard Moore and Christian Gray should keep the Irish secondary among the nation's best. Gray was a little inconsistent after returning from an injury last fall, but the expectations are that Irish fans will see the pre-injury version of him in 2025. Safety Adon Shuler learned under Watts and could be poised for a standout season. He had 59 tackles, five pass breakups and three interceptions while playing alongside Watts last year. ND also landed Alabama transfer Devonta Smith in the portal. The big question is who will play safety opposite Shuler. Luke Talich, Brauntae Johnson, freshman JaDon Blair and Virginia Tech transfer Jalen Stroman are all in the mix. Notre Dame's secondary will be a key component of a team that has College Football Playoff aspirations once again. 'I'm high on Marcel Reed' ESPN broadcaster all-in on Texas A&M QB
'I'm high on Marcel Reed' ESPN broadcaster all-in on Texas A&M QB This offseason, any time Texas A&M starting quarterback Marcel Reed receives positive press outside of the Aggie media sphere is surprising, given last season's poor 1-4 finish, which included several forgettable performances from Reed, who wasn't afforded the levity most first-year starters are given when they have bad games. Again, this isn't surprising in today's college football landscape, where immediate results are expected when quarterbacks, especially those who were four or five-star recruits, fail to match their high school production during their first starting season. Still, Reed was trading starts with Conner Weigman last season, whose injury issues led to him transferring to Houston early in the offseason. Texas A&M's offense, on paper at least, could end up being one of the top units in the SEC with the return of senior running back Le'Veon Moss combined with the additions of transfer wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver. On Friday, during an interview with TexAgs Live host David Nuño, ESPN play-by-play voice Roy Philpott discussed coach Mike Elko's impending second season at the helm, with a focus on offensive coordinator Collin Klein and Marcel Reed's potential improvement. "I know the start for Elko had everyone's expectations out of whack and took it by storm. Another year of Reed and Collin Klien... Like in my conversations with Klein, he will build an offense around the quarterback and the skill set that he has. He's got interesting wide receiver weapons with KC Concepcion coming in. The development of Reed and Klein intertwines and gets a head start, knowing he's going to be the guy." Philpott's reality-based opinion aligns with what we at Aggies Wire have been stating throughout the offseason: Year 2 under Klein should yield a significant jump in Reed's production as the full-time starter. Needing wide receivers who can take the top off a defense and make plays after the catch was also key, as Reed's short-game accuracy should lead to chunk gains with players like Concepcion and sophomore WR Terry Bussey. "If you have multiple quarterbacks playing for an extended period of time, I don't think it goes well for you. It goes without saying that we love college football. Now more than ever, if you go to different guys, your chances of making the College Football Playoff are not good. I am high on Reed, what he brings, his skill set and Klein. That's what makes them fascinating. Klein is settling in now that he's there. He's got his guy and has to stay healthy. I'm excited to see what that's like." As Phlipott notes, staying the course with Reed from the start of spring ball to the fall is a winning strategy that should result in continued progression, which should help Collin Klein open up the playbook to take advantage of Reed's skillset on the ground, and if the redshirt sophomore improves in the throw game, Texas A&M's offense should keep the team in every game this season. Texas A&M will kick off the 2025 season against UTSA on Saturday, August 31. Stephenson hits a grand slam in 6-run fifth as Reds rout Tigers 11-1
DETROIT -- Tyler Stephenson hit a grand slam in a six-run fifth inning and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Detroit Tigers 11-1 on Saturday. Elly De La Cruz, Spencer Steer and Matt McLain also homered for the Reds, who had been outscored 22-7 in the last two games. The American League-leading Tigers are 4-2 in their last six games but have given up double-digit runs in each loss. Brady Singer (7-4) got the win, giving up one run on four hits in six innings. He walked three while striking out four. Jack Flaherty (5-7) allowed seven runs on five hits — including three homers — and five walks in 4 2/3 innings. De La Cruz led off the fourth with a 110 mph line drive into the right-field stands for his second homer in as many days. The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Wenceel Pérez's RBI single, but the Reds answered with six runs in a 10-batter fifth. Jake Fraley started the inning with a single, took second on TJ Friedl's one-out walk and scored on Gavin Lux's single. Flaherty then walked De La Cruz, loading the bases, and Stephenson hit his next pitch for his second career grand slam. Flaherty retired the next batter, but Steer ended Flaherty's game with another homer. McLain hit a three-run homer off John Brebbia in the eighth, and the Reds added a run off Tigers catcher Jake Rogers in the ninth. Both teams got run-saving defensive plays in the third inning. In the top of the inning, Tigers 1B Colt Keith made a bare-handed stop after Gavin Lux's hard grounder deflected off the bag and recorded the final out with runners on first and second. In the bottom of the inning, De La Cruz took Jake Fraley's throw from right and threw out Javier Báez at the plate as he tried to score on Trey Sweeney's double. Flaherty has allowed a team-high 14 homers in his 14 starts — an average of 1.7 per nine innings. The teams finish their series on Sunday, with Tigers RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-0, 4.32) facing LHP Wade Miley (1-0, 9.00).
