Peaky Blinders actor turned director tells of northern focus

BBC News10-03-2025

A Peaky Blinders star who has turned his talents to directing has spoken of his hopes to reflect the lighter side of life in the north of England.Burnley-born Jack Hartley is hoping for more success at this year's Manchester Film Festival to follow the award he received at last year's event.Hartley, who has also appeared in the likes of Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Holby City, saw his "surreal comedy" A Piece Of Cake - which was shot in Stockport, Greater Manchester - scoop a best cinematography award. This year his film Humble Pie, shot in Audenshaw, is also being shown at the north of England's largest film festival.
Hartley, 31, said: "When you see a lot of these shows on TV it is about how hard and depressing it is growing up in the north but growing up in Burnley it was great crack and I had a right laugh. "I want to lean into that more and celebrate that."
'Northern voices'
Hartley described how he admires series such as Sky's comedy-drama Brassic, especially the work of Chorley actorJoe Gilgun and Hyde-born writer Danny Brocklehurst."I see something of their journey and I am hoping to follow in their footsteps," he said."Although I would say much of my work is not so much northern grit but leading into comedy and surrealism."He added: "I've always grown up enjoying a lot of northern comedies with the work of Peter Kay, Craig Cash and Caroline Ahearn – I feel like there's a gap for northern voice in film and TV"I don't see enough of it. I would love to carry that torch and keep championing northern talent and northern voices."The north is so full of talent and it would be great to keep pushing our great casts and crews."Hartley, who said he "fell into acting" said he became attracted to life on the other side of the camera because he wanted to "make my own ideas come to life". The 10-day festival starts on Friday.

Eileen Grimshaw had a special send-off during Friday's episode of the soap, where she was seen leaving for Thailand alongside her son Jason Grimshaw, played by Ryan Thomas. ‌ Simon Gregson's character Steve McDonald, Tony Maudsley's George Shuttleworth, and Eileen's son Todd, played by Gareth Pierce, all said goodbye to the matriarch before drivers from the local taxi firm honked their horns as she was driven off. ‌ In an Instagram post, Cleaver said: "Well... that's a wrap. 25 years of laughs, tears, costumes, chaos - and one unforgettable journey. "I'll miss this character like crazy, but what a ride it's been. Thank you for every moment." Cleaver has played the outspoken and uncomplicated Eileen in the ITV show since 2000. Article continues below Eileen came to Weatherfield to work at the local taxi firm, Streetcars, to provide for her two tearaway teenage children, Jason and Todd. She soon became friends with her boss Steve and came into conflict with Helen Worth's character Gail Rodwell (also known as Gail Platt). Cleaver took part in I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2022, where she opened up about reconciling with her birth mother, and was eliminated third. Article continues below She also said her family is "bizarrely interconnected" to other Coronation Street stars, including Worth who is godmother to one of her half-sisters, while her other half-sister's husband, John Bowe, appeared on the cobbles as Duggie Ferguson. In 2024, she released a book A Work In Progress in which she discusses how she feels she is not past her prime. In recent years she has appeared as a panellist on ITV chat show Loose Women.

Coronation Street bosses urged to wake up over bad stories

The programme has been slammed by viewers for its over-reliance on serious crime stories and the under-utilisation of established characters, something that many believe was the reason for its poor showing at the British Soap Awards. Corrie, which first aired all the way back in 1960, was outshone by rival soap operas like EastEnders last week, leading to concern from some ITV viewers. The only title won by Coronation Street at the British Soap Awards last week was claimed by David Neilson (Roy Cropper) for the Outstanding Achievement category. According to the Radio Times, the rest were won by Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and EastEnders. Taking to the Coronation Street Reddit, one fan simply demanded that the showrunners "wake up" and added that it "absolutely deserved to get no awards" last week. They wrote: "The soap awards should be a massive wake-up call. Corrie absolutely deserved to get no awards, sorry to say, not compared to EastEnders. "The show has been a constant crime saga with pointless loopholed stories carried by meaningless characters. I remember corrie in the 2017/18 days when they did Aidan's suicide, Bethany's grooming plot, David's rape. "Going even further back, I remember Kirsty and Tyrone's domestic abuse storyline, which was heavily lauded. Even the racism with Max/Lauren and Alia alongside Geoff's abuse of Yasmin was heartbreaking to see. "Yes, they were miserable and dark stories, but they were relevant stories and had us hooked, and we cared so much about what these characters were going through." They added: "It's ridiculous how established characters are being sidelined for newer ones who haven't even built a rapport with audiences. "Work with some charities and do further research on issue-based stories that can be explored instead of being lazy and recycling constant cheating and crime storylines with the same predictable characters. "I get the newer actors are probs cheaper to use and easier to fit in anywhere to make up a storyline but overusing them creates resentment towards them. "Use them sensibly and start giving the older cast members more meaty storylines." Coronation Street icon of 25 years leaves show tonight after huge decision Fans cry soap is 'robbed' at British Soap Awards as 'chaos' halts start to show Coronation Street legend accidentally reveals Emmerdale crossover spoiler Finishing the complaint, the ITV viewer said: "Listen to your audiences for once, otherwise these pointless stories that always revolve around cheating and crime are further going to decrease your popularity." Other fans of the show agreed with one user writing: "Not going to lie. I do still enjoy Corrie. But there needs to be more 'kitchen sink'/Rovers scenes. The occasional trauma-based storyline better executed. It's like they pick and choose which they want to do well." Another added: "Coronation Street has been the worst I have ever known it in the past 12 months."
