Central Railway unveils closed-door local coach for train safety in Mumbai
The prototype, prepared at CR's Kurla car shed using a Siemens-manufactured rake, comes a month-and-a-half after the Mumbra accident on June 9, in which four commuters died after nine others were injured after falling off a crowded local. The coach has been fitted with ventilated mesh doors replacing the conventional fibreglass panels. It will be showcased to Railway Board chairman (CRB) Jaya Varma Sinha during her visit to Mumbai on Aug 4.
This is the first time CR has experimented with closed-door technology on a non-air-conditioned EMU rake. The development follows a commitment made by railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to introduce such safety measures on non-AC locals after the Mumbra mishap. "This is a prototype of a closed-door system with ventilated design, which is yet to receive final approval. It can be operated by the motorman or the train manager," a senior CR official said.

While the current design uses mesh-type screens to allow airflow, CR is also evaluating the use of louvered panels. Western Railway had tried a similar concept in 2019 on three coaches, but the project was shelved due to ventilation and load challenges.
After the Mumbra incident, the Railway Board instructed that future non-AC rakes be redesigned to improve safety and comfort. Major design changes include automated doors, ceiling-mounted ventilation units, and wider vestibules between coaches for easier movement.
The redesign is also being worked on by Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. These new non-AC coaches will supplement the 238 AC locals being procured for Mumbai, which sees 65–70 lakh daily suburban commuters.

Key stretch to HSVP mkt in a state of disrepair, riddled with potholes
Gurgaon: The 300-metre stretch leading up to HSVP market in Sector 23 has been in a state of disrepair for the last one month, posing serious safety risks to commuters and pedestrians, especially during the monsoon. Despite repeated complaints, no action has been taken. The road is riddled with potholes and a huge crater, making it hazardous for motorists and two-wheeler riders. Residents said the recarpeting work was last taken up before the assembly election in Oct last year, but the condition has deteriorated rapidly. The residents also pointed out that there is no stormwater drain along the road, and the existing sewer line constantly overflows. They further claimed that the eateries in the market are dumping oil directly into the sewer line. Residents said streetlights often don't work at night, making it even more dangerous to navigate the broken stretch. "The condition has become unbearable over the past few weeks. This road caters to a huge population not only in our sector but in the surrounding area as well. After a few spells of rain, the asphalt started peeling off, making it difficult to commute," said Harish Nair, RWA president of Sector 23 (East Pocket). When contacted, an MCG official said the matter was brought to their knowledge. "We will fill the potholes to make it motorable. Bituminous work will be taken up after the monsoon." CM wants more one-way roads in city, but violations rampant, monitoring inadequate on existing ones
1 2 Jaipur: Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's instructions to implement one-way traffic on the city's busiest roads is questionable, as the routes already declared as one-way lack monitoring and violations are common. On Sunday, when Team TOI visited these one-way routes, traffic was moving in both directions on most of them. At Tonk Puliya underpass, a traffic board clearly says in Hindi that motorists from Barkat Nagar side should not take a right turn towards the underpass, but almost all vehicles from that side were turning right towards the underpass here. A few months ago, the traffic department declared one-way traffic on a few roads in Raja Park from 4pm. The imposition is still on paper, but there is no such restriction on these roads. The stretch between Kendriya Vidyalaya in Bajaj Nagar and Tonk Road was declared one-way only last week. Although a barricade is placed to stop movement of traffic from the Gandhi Nagar Railway Station side, most vehicles violate the norm whenever there are no traffic officials posted. "We don't have enough manpower to be deployed on the roads. The problem is that motorists in Jaipur continue to violate norms until and unless there's human intervention," said a senior traffic official. Pothole and broken pavement stall traffic in IT hub, commuters bear the brunt
Noida: Residents and commuters alike have raised concerns over a pothole that has come up along a broken sidewalk in the service lane between Sectors 135 and 168. The poor condition of the stretch has become a traffic hazard for those traversing the area, commuters said, adding that they are facing increased delays and congestion in the area. Residents noted that while the service lane is some distance away from housing societies in Sector 135, the stretch is a necessary part of the commute for many office-goers who work in the area, which is a commercial hub with around 30-40 offices nearby. "The pothole poses a risk not only to vehicles, but also to the safety of pedestrians. Local authorities must address this matter as soon as possible," said Yashpal Singh Chikara, secretary of the HD Duplex Villas RWA. Office-goers rushing to the complex only adds to the traffic congestion during peak hours.
