Luna scores twice to lead US over Guatemala 2-1 and into CONCACAF Gold Cup final
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Diego Luna scored twice in the first 15 minutes, and the United States hung on to beat Guatemala 2-1 on Wednesday night to reach its first CONCACAF Gold Cup final since 2021.
Luna put the U.S. ahead with a left-footed shot in the fourth minute, then scored with his right in the 15th for his third goal in two games.
Olger Escobar, an 18-year who was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, cut inside and slid a shot from inside the area between Matt Freese and the far post in the 80th for his second goal of the tournament. Freese parried José Morales' shot toward the far post in the second minute of stoppage time.
The U.S. plays defending champion Mexico or Honduras for the title Sunday at Houston, the Americans' last competitive match before their World Cup opener next June. El Tri has won nine Gold Cups, the U.S. seven and Canada one.
The 16th-ranked Americans advanced to the Gold Cup final for the 13th time. All five losses in finals have been to Mexico.
The No. 106 Guatemala, which has never reached the final, outshot the U.S. 13-1 in the last 30 minutes of the first half.
Luna got his first goal after Alex Freeman crossed for Malik Tillman. He touched the ball to Luca de la Torre, whose shot was spilled by goalkeeper Kenderson Navarro. Luna reacted quickly and switched the ball from his right foot to his left, then shot over Navarro's outstretched right hand.
Eleven minutes later, Luna received cross-field pass from Tillman about 40 yards out, dribbled in, got by defender José Carlos Pinto with a stepover and put the ball inside the near post from the edge of the penalty area.
Guatemala's starters included a pair of former U.S. players: 29-year-old forward Rubio Rubin made seven appearances for the Americans from 2014-18 before switching in 2022 and 28-year-old defender Aaron Herrera made one in 2021 and then changed in 2023.
Rubin put the ball past Freese in the 29th minute but the goal was disallowed for offside. Freese made a kick save on Rubin in the 34th.

Owen Farrell summoned by Lions after Elliot Daly ruled out of tour by broken arm
SYDNEY (AP) — Former England captain Owen Farrell was summoned by the British and Irish Lions to replace Elliot Daly on the tour of Australia on Thursday. Daly broke his left forearm on Wednesday in the 52-12 win over the Queensland Reds in Brisbane. 'It is heartbreaking for the group that Elliot's tour is over,' Lions coach Andy Farrell said in a statement. "He is a Lions legend who has added so much to the group on and off the field over the past few weeks and over the course of three tours. 'Owen will now come in and add to our options and bring his own Lions experience to the group.' Owen Farrell will join his fourth tour, having played 18 times for the Lions, including six tests across 2013, 2017 and 2021. However, he hasn't played an international since leading England at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, after which he took a break from test rugby. He earned 112 England caps and is the team's all-time points record-holder. Owen Farrell also hasn't played any rugby in two months. He was concussed on May 4 while playing for Racing 92 in his last game for the French Top 14 side. He recently signed a new deal to return to his old English club Saracens. He won't arrive in Sydney until Friday, too late to be involved in the game against the New South Wales Waratahs on Saturday. Tadhg Beirne will lead the Lions, returning to the second row to partner fellow Ireland lock James Ryan. Fullback Hugo Keenan and wing Blair Kinghorn will make their Lions debuts. Keenan was withdrawn from the Queensland game after falling ill, while Kinghorn joined the Lions only on Monday after helping Toulouse win the Top 14 title last weekend. Northampton clubmates Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith are the halves and Scotland duo Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones are the centers. ___ Lions: Hugo Keenan (Ireland), Mack Hansen (Ireland), Huw Jones (Scotland), Sione Tuipulotu (Scotland), Blair Kinghorn (Scotland), Fin Smith (England), Alex Mitchell (England); Ben Earl (England), Josh van der Flier (Ireland), Henry Pollock (England), James Ryan (Ireland), Tadhg Beirne (Ireland, captain), Finlay Bealham (Ireland), Luke Cowan-Dickie (England), Pierre Schoeman (Scotland). Reserves: Dan Sheehan (Ireland), Ellis Genge (England), Tadhg Furlong (Ireland), Joe McCarthy (Ireland), Scott Cummings (Scotland), Jac Morgan (Wales), Ben White (Scotland), Marcus Smith (England).

Wisconsin basketball recruits lead New Zealand to FIBA U19 World Cup Round of 16 win
Wisconsin basketball commits Hayden Jones and Jackson Ball led New Zealand to the FIBA U19 World Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday. A day removed from the team's narrow 103-97 loss to Serbia, New Zealand responded with a critical 99-86 victory over China in its first win-or-go-home contest of the circuit. New Zealand's commanding 52-37 edge by intermission set the tone for the remainder of the contest, which concluded with a dominant defensive effort in the fourth quarter. After scoring 35 points in the third frame, China mustered just 14 total points in the final period of play, enabling New Zealand to advance to the next round of the World Cup. Jones, who pledged his commitment to Greg Gard's program on July 25, 2024, was responsible for 16 points off 6-of-12 from the field, 1-of-3 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. The 6-foot-5 guard also corralled a team-best nine rebounds and dished out four assists in over 31 minutes of play. Seven of the class of 2025 product's points arrived in the first quarter, fueling New Zealand to an 11-point edge within the first 10 minutes of action. New Zealand national teamer and future Badger Jackson Ball also showed out with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists in over 29 minutes on the floor. Ball opened the tournament with a team-high 17 points against Argentina on June 28, and he dropped a team-leading 19 points against Serbia on July 1. Through three games, he ranks second on his team in scoring with 13.5 points per game. Jones, meanwhile, is accountable for 13.3 points and a team-best 8.8 rebounds per contest. Both players appear towards the top of New Zealand's scouting report, and they've put together impressive outings through four games thus far. Behind strong performances from future NBA athletes Koa Peat, AJ Dybantsa, Morez Johnson Jr. and Christopher Brown, the Americans have amassed a perfect 4-0 mark, including a dominant 140-67 win over Jordan in their Round of 16 game on Wednesday. New Zealand will square off next against Switzerland on July 4 for an opportunity to appear in the semifinals. Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother were killed in a car accident in Spain, police say
Associated Press MADRID (AP) — Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother were killed in a car accident in Spain, police said Thursday. The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed to The Associated Press that Jota and his brother were found dead after their car went off a road near the northwestern city of Zamora. Authorities said the car — a Lamborghini, according to police — was in flames. Firefighters were called in as the fire spread into the nearby vegetation, authorities said. Police were investigating the causes of the accident that happened past midnight local time. They said there were no other vehicles involved. The bodies were undergoing forensic analysis. It wasn't clear who was driving the car. Police were looking into the hypothesis that the accident happened because of a blown tire. The accident occurred along an isolated stretch of highway about an hour west of Zamora. The 28-year-old Jota and his brother, 25-year-old Andre Silva, both Portuguese players, were in the car. Jota's death comes weeks after he married Rute Cardoso and in a social media post wrote, 'Yes to forever.' They had three children, the youngest born last year. Jota also played for Portugal's national team and helped it win the Nations League last month. Silva played with Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions. Liverpool said the club was 'devastated by the tragic passing.' 'Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.' Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and won three major trophies with the Merseyside club — including the Premier League title last season. The Portuguese soccer federation released a statement lamenting the deaths. Federation president Pedro Proença said Portuguese soccer was 'completely devastated.' 'More than a fantastic player, with almost 50 appearances for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his colleagues and opponents. He had a contagious joy and was a reference in his community,' Proença said in the statement. The Portuguese federation said it has requested a minute of silence before Thursday's match between Portugal and Spain at the Women's European Championship being played in Switzerland. 'We lost two champions,' Proença said. "Their deaths represent an irreparable loss for Portuguese soccer and we will all do our best to honor their legacy daily.' Portugal's Prime Minister Luís Montenegro commented on the 'unexpected and tragic' deaths. He said Jota was 'an athlete who greatly honored Portugal's name.' 'I extend my deepest condolences to their family,' he said. 'It is a sad day for soccer and for national and international sports.' Reaction also started pouring in from across the soccer world. Former club Porto and former teammates lamented the deaths and sent condolences, as did other clubs, federations and leagues. The Premier League said it was 'shocked and devastated.' 'Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo's family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time,' it said. 'Football has lost a champion who will be forever missed. We will continue to support our friends and colleagues at the club.' UEFA said its thoughts were with relatives, friends and teammates affected 'by this heartbreaking loss.' It said a moment of silence will be observed at Euro 2025 matches on Thursday and Friday. ___ AP Soccer Writer James Robson contributed to this report. ___ AP soccer: recommended
