QU organises annual exhibition, end-of-year celebration for architecture program
DOHA: The Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at the College of Engineering, Qatar University (QU), has organised the Annual Exhibition and End-of-Year Celebration for the Architecture Program at the College of Engineering, in the presence of Minister of Municipality HE Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah, and QU President Dr Omar Al Ansari, along with several dignitaries, officials, and representatives from academic and professional institutions.
Held in collaboration with the Arab Engineering Bureau and other relevant bodies in Qatar, the event aimed to showcase the projects and achievements of the department's female students for the 2024–2025 academic year, while also highlighting the department's initiatives and its academic and community partnerships. It reflected the department's commitment to strengthening the integration between education and practical application and to providing an interactive platform for creativity and professional networking.
In his speech during the event, Dean of the College of Engineering at QU Dr Khalid Kamal Naji stated, "Our students' projects this year reflect a wide range of ideas and innovations, made possible through valuable partnerships and the ongoing guidance of our faculty. The projects span diverse topics across different studios, addressing complex social, cultural, and environmental challenges with clarity and outstanding ambition."
He added, "These partnerships went beyond symbolic support and were embodied in practical initiatives, direct supervision, and real training opportunities, which added a distinctive professional dimension to the educational experience. At the College of Engineering, we value this continued support and aim to deepen and expand these strategic relationships to serve our shared goals in preparing a new generation of architects capable of contributing to a sustainable urban environment aligned with the aspirations of Qatar National Vision 2030."
Representatives of these institutions expressed their admiration for the quality of the architectural and planning work on display, emphasizing the importance of such events in strengthening the partnership between academia and the labor market and encouraging students to innovate and be creative.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Municipality indicated that Qatar's hosting of this prestigious event underscores the country's genuine commitment to embedding comprehensive sustainability principles on the global stage. It further affirms Qatar's distinguished standing in the field, particularly in light of the ongoing programs and initiatives spearheaded by the Ministry of Municipality under the Third National Development Strategy (2024–2030), which prioritizes the development of smart cities, adoption of digital infrastructure, and the optimization of resource efficiency. The Ministry of Municipality has played a pivotal role in advancing urban sustainability through smart urban planning, modernization of public service systems, and the integration of sustainable transportation - efforts that were clearly demonstrated during Qatar's hosting of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 through the delivery of seamless services powered by innovation and technology. The 2025 awards ceremony is set to take place on Dec 4 at the historic Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami, with the participation of prominent global figures from the fields of sustainability, technology, and economics. The event will honor distinguished international leaders across three categories: Leadership in Implementation, Smart and Sustainable City Solutions, and Innovation-Driven Economic Diversification. The NST was established by members of the Nobel family as an independent organization, with no administrative affiliation to the original Nobel Foundation. NST aims to promote global sustainable development by honoring groundbreaking innovations and impactful initiatives, encouraging collaborative research, and supporting international dialogue on sustainable energy, smart cities, circular economy, and good governance. The NST Awards are granted annually in three main categories. Irshad stars as Black Hawks lift QCA Cup
Tribune News Network Doha A breezy half century from Adnan Irshad and a four-wicket haul by Awais Riaz propelled Black Hawks to a convincing 56-run victory over Arabian Knights in the final to lift the QCA Cup on Saturday. The winners were honoured by Abdullah Al Abdullah, Director of Domestic Cricket, Qatar Cricket Association (QCA). Adnan, who made 37-ball 51 (2x4s, 3x6s) shared an opening stand of 45 runs with Jamshaid Anwar (33) and a 70-run second-wicket association with Syed Kazim (35). Imdad Hussain (17) and Zaigham Abbas (26) later added to Black Hawks' total of 181 for 5 in 20 overs. Chasing the target, Arabian Knights were bowled out for 125 runs in 18.3 overs. Riaz, who opened the bowling with Zabih Ullah, was the most successful returning figures of 3.3-1-13-4. Kazim claimed two wickets while Ullah, Abdullah Shahzad and Saad Abbasi claimed a wicket each. Wasim Muhammad made the highest score of 23 runs for Arabian Knights. Adnan Irshad was named Man of the Match. A total of 36 teams participated in the tournament which was played from January 17 to May 30, 2025.

‘New paediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Ward expands access to life-saving care for children'
Dr Iyabo Tinubu-Karch, CEO of Sidra Medicine, said: 'The opening of our new paediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Ward, the first of its kind in the country, marks a major step in expanding access to life-saving care for children in Qatar and the region. As the HSCT program grows, it will play a vital role in reducing the need for outbound referrals and in positioning Qatar as a center of excellence for pediatric cell and gene therapies. This is about building sustainable, high-quality care close to home for our patients and their families.' Prof. Ibrahim Janahi, Chief Medical Officer at Sidra Medicine, said: 'The launch of the HSCT Ward reflects our commitment to supporting the Qatar National Vision 2030. It strengthens the foundation of a knowledge-based economy by building national expertise in precision and regenerative medicine. Our goal is to ensure that every child in Qatar can access the best possible treatment, close to home and grounded in clinical excellence.' Managed by the Hematology and Oncology Division at Sidra Medicine, the new ward is designed exclusively for pediatric patients under the age of 18. It is divided into two main sections—one section for children undergoing HSCT and the other for patients with complex hematology-oncology diagnoses such as cancer, that require intensive chemotherapy and inpatient care. With an initial capacity of 20 beds, the new pediatric HSCT ward integrates cutting-edge infrastructure, including high-level isolation facilities that meet international infection control standards. It is scheduled to receive patients for autologous transplants in late June of 2025 with preparations underway to care for inpatient children who will undergo allogeneic transplants, at a later stage. Dr Ayman Saleh, Division Chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology & Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant at Sidra Medicine, said: 'Our HSCT program brings together key specialties to deliver advanced and curative care for children with complex conditions. With four autologous procedures successfully completed and plans underway to offer allogeneic transplants in the near future, we are building a strong foundation for pediatric cellular therapy in Qatar. This service is a testament to the pioneering and family-centered care and cure approach that we offer to all our patients.' In addition to treating patients with various blood diseases and cancers, the HSCT program at Sidra Medicine is the core part of its precision medicine strategy to facilitate genomic research programs for pediatric autoimmune disorders, genetic and rare diseases. Sidra Medicine's HSCT program is further enhanced by a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)-qualified laboratory team operating under the Advanced Cell Therapy Core (ACTC). The ACTC manages the processing and cryopreservation of hematopoietic stem cells and is currently working toward Sidra Medicine's qualification as a treatment center for Casgevy, a gene therapy for thalassemia and sickle cell disease. Dr Chiara Cugno, Director of the Advanced Cell Therapy Core and GMP Facility at Sidra Medicine said: 'Our GMP-qualified laboratory is a key enabler in delivering safe and effective cellular therapies. By maintaining the highest standards in cell processing and cryopreservation, we are supporting precision treatments for children with cancer, blood, and immunologic disorders. It is an essential part of ensuring every child receives the most personalized care possible.' All HSCT program services will be open to both local and international patients, with more than 50 children currently awaiting transplantation in Qatar. Future phases for the HSCT program include scaling allogeneic transplant capacity and introducing CAR-T cell and gene therapies. The HSCT program includes a multidisciplinary team of specialized physicians, apheresis-trained staff, dedicated HSCT nurses, and allied health professionals. The Sidra Medicine care team also involves experts in immunology, infectious diseases, radiology, psychology, pharmacy, nutrition, child life, and social work. The integrated approach ensures comprehensive and patient-centered care throughout the transplant journey. Before a transplant, every child will go through a detailed evaluation at Sidra Medicine's outpatient clinic to ensure they are ready for the procedure. Once admitted, the children will undergo conditioning chemotherapy to prepare their bodies for the stem cell infusion. They will then be monitored very closely during the aplasia phase, when their immune system is at its weakest. Most patients will stay at the hospital for about 30 to 40 days. Following discharge, they will continue their care through regular follow-ups in an outpatient setting. In addition to medical and nursing care, Sidra Medicine offers support services for patients and families, including social work, clinical nurse specialists, and case management. While formal support groups are under development, ongoing engagement with families is embedded throughout the care process.
