British Open at Portrush starts with an Irish cheer. That's how the last one ended
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — The British Open at Royal Portrush started Thursday the way the last one ended: A packed grandstand and throaty cheers for an Irish golfer.
Padraig Harrington, a two-time Open champion, hit the opening shot of the 153rd edition of golf's oldest championship with a piercing iron into the wind off the North Atlantic, between pot bunkers on both sides and into the fairway.
The Open returns to Royal Portrush after only six years. The final stroke in 2019 was a tap-in par for Shane Lowry of Ireland for his first major title.
Harrington was the last to arrive on the first tee, the silver claret jug positioned to the left to remind players what's at stake this year. He raised his cap, appreciating the gesture of the R&A to offer him the opening shot.
And then he produced an even louder cheer when he holed a 15-foot birdie putt.
It's only a start to the longest day in golf — the first shot was 6:35 a.m. local time. The final group won't finished until around 9:30 p.m.
Rory McIlroy is the star attraction in his native Northern Ireland. His major championship season began with him wearing the Masters green jacket with hopes of ending it cradling the claret jug. He was among the late starters on Thursday.
The morning wave featured Scottie Scheffler, the PGA champion and world's No. 1 player for the last two years, and defending Open champion Xander Schauffele, who is trying to become the first player since Harrington (2007-08) to win the Open in consecutive years.
This is only the third time Royal Portrush has hosted the Open, the first one coming in 1951 for a club that dates to 1888.
The forecast for the week is mixed, a term in these parts that roughly translates to expect just about everything. Harrington led off under streaks of sunshine before the wind ushered in clouds.

Bryson DeChambeau is going to be a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team this fall no matter what. U.S. captain Keegan Bradley texted Sports Illustrated's Bob Harig after the British Open on Sunday and confirmed that, even if DeChambeau falls out of the top six in the Ryder Cup standings, he'd use a captain's pick on him to ensure that DeChambeau gets to compete with the Americans at Bethpage Black. 'Bryson is going to be a very important piece to us winning the Ryder cup,' Bradley said. 'He brings so much. He brings energy, passion, but most importantly, he's one of the best players on the planet.' DeChambeau posted a final-round 64 on Sunday at Royal Portrush to finish T10 at the British Open. He's now finished inside the top 10 at three of the four major championships this season. But, as DeChambeau competes with LIV Golf, he's no longer eligible for points on the U.S. Ryder Cup standings. He is currently fifth on that list. The top six golfers on that list after the BMW Championship next month will earn automatic spots on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. As DeChambeau holds just a slight lead over Justin Thomas on the list, and there are several other PGA Tour members lurking just outside the cutoff, it's very possible that he could fall out of that top group. After the top six players are locked in, Bradley will then make his six captain's picks to round out his 12-man team. At that point, if necessary, he'd use one on DeChambeau. DeChambeau said he spoke with Bradley 'briefly' at Royal Portrush this week, and that he 'put something in our lockers that was pretty inspirational.' While he didn't reveal what that message was, DeChambeau is clearly in and ready to go for the Ryder Cup. 'It meant a lot,' he said. 'This year's no joke. We're tired of it. We're tired of losing.' DeChambeau, after making the jump to LIV Golf, was not on the United States' team for the last Ryder Cup in 2023. They fell to Europe that year in Rome. He has played on two previous teams, however, including the 2021 squad that won in Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. The Americans haven't lost at home since 2012, when the Europeans edged out a one-point win at Medinah Country Club. With DeChambeau now on board, he's hoping to bring an extra push with him to New York in September. 'I hope I can bring a lot of energy and a tsunami of a crowd that's going to be rooting for Team USA,' he said.

Chiefs' Rashee Rice to participate in training camp despite jail sentence
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Rashee Rice will be a full participant in training camp, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Sunday, three days after the standout wide receiver was sentenced to 30 days in jail after authorities said he and another speeding driver caused a chain-reaction crash that left multiple people injured on a Dallas highway last year. Whether he will be able to fully participate in the regular season remains to be seen. Reid said on the eve of camp beginning that he has not been told by the NFL whether Rice will serve a suspension, though it is widely expected. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy acknowledged last week "we have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review.' 'We're going to progress as normal with him,' Reid said on the campus of Missouri Western State University. 'He'll go in and take all the reps that he'll normally take. We always rotate that position. Depending on what happens here with the future — whoever needs to play will step in and know what they are doing and be in good shape to do it.' Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury in the March 30, 2024, crash. As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors said, Rice was sentenced to five years of deferred probation and 30 days in jail as a condition of his probation. The Dallas County District Attorney's Office said that the 25-year-old Rice, who will have some flexibility in when he must serve the jail time, also was required to pay the victims for their out-of-pocket medical expenses, which totaled about $115,000. Rice was driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV at 119 mph (191 kph) when he made 'multiple aggressive maneuvers around traffic' and struck other vehicles, prosecutors said. After the crash on North Central Expressway, prosecutors said, Rice failed to check on the welfare of those in the other vehicles and fled on foot. Rice said in a statement issued by his attorney that he's had 'a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole.' Rice got off to a flying start to his second NFL season last year, catching 24 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns in his first three games. But in Week 4, after Patrick Mahomes had thrown an interception, the quarterback accidentally dived into Rice's leg as they were trying to make the tackle, tearing the lateral collateral ligament in his knee. Rice wound up missing the rest of the season, which culminated in a loss to Philadelphia in the Super Bowl. After spending the season rehabbing the injury, Rice was able to participate in the Chiefs' offseason program, and Reid said he would not be limited by the injury in training camp. That begins with testing and meetings on Tuesday, followed by the first full-squad workout on Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to hit triple digits. 'We'll keep an eye on that,' Reid said of Rice's knee injury. 'As far as pulling back because of suspensions or whatever, you know, we're going forward. And then we'll monitor him as far as (the injury) goes.' In other news, Reid said that cornerback Kristian Fulton and right tackle Jawaan Taylor — who are dealing with their own knee injuries — would begin the season alongside tight end Tre Watson on the physically unable-to-perform list. Fulton signed a two-year, $20 million contract to solidify the secondary while Taylor is expected to start at right tackle. Reid also said first-round pick Josh Simmons, who is coming off a torn patellar tendon at Ohio State, would not be limited at the start of training camp. The Chiefs hope that Simmons is able to prove he can handle the job at left tackle, where a rotating cast of characters was unable to protect Mahomes' blind side last season. With Taylor on the PUP list, the Chiefs will start with Simmons at left tackle and Jaylon Moore — who signed a two-year, $30 million deal in free agency — at right tackle. But it's possible that Moore could push Simmons for the starting job on the left side during training camp in what could be the biggest position battle for the defending AFC champions. "We evaluate these guys every day," Reid said. 'Whether it's a light practice or a hard day, they're evaluated, and graded, and so on. We'll see how it all sorts out.'

Suárez hits 2 homers for 2nd consecutive game as Diamondbacks beat Cardinals 5-3
PHOENIX (AP) — Eugenio Suárez homered twice for the second consecutive day and Merrill Kelly allowed two runs in six innings to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Sunday. Suárez has six multihomer games this season — including a four-homer game on April 26 — and leads the majors with 20 home runs since June 1. He launched a three-run drive off starter Miles Mikolas (5-7) in the first inning and a solo shot in the third. The slugger leads the National League with 35 homers, one more than Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani, and his 85 RBIs are tops in the big leagues — two ahead of Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh. Yohel Pozo, Jordan Walker and Victor Scott II drew consecutive walks to load the bases for St. Louis with no outs in the fifth.
