Missing girl, 12, found murdered
A 12-year-old girl who went missing earlier this week was found murdered in the bushes in Motherwell in the early hours of Friday morning.
Police have arrested a 39-year-old man on charges of kidnapping and murder after the body of young Lithaliyanda Ntoni was discovered near Khabonqaba Street, NU6, just after 2am.
She had last been seen on Tuesday after going to a nearby shop. She never returned home.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed the incident.
She said an investigation was under way.
Maj-Gen Thandiswa Kupiso, acting provincial commissioner of the Eastern Cape, said: 'While we commend the swift arrest in this case, the brutal nature of this child's murder has deeply shocked our officers and the community.
'We have full confidence in our investigative team and the National Prosecuting Authority to ensure justice for Lithaliyanda and her family.'

Joburg woman in custody over ‘kidnapped' three-day-old baby
Mgijima said according to the suspect, she wanted to claim the child as her own after she miscarried in May. 'She told us she was scared to tell her family and her partner's family she miscarried,' she said. Gauteng health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko voiced her concern after the incident and another at the Alexandra community health-care centre when a one-month-old infant was allegedly taken after the mother left the child in the care of a stranger on May 12. "We are seeing a trend where parents place their trust in strangers, often during vulnerable moments within health facilities. While we strive to offer a safe and caring environment, we wish to emphasise the importance of vigilance and personal responsibility when it comes to the safety of children," said Nkomo-Ralehoko. She urged all parents and guardians to never leave their children unattended and not entrust their baby to a stranger, no matter how friendly or helpful they may seem. She said it is important to always inform staff if you need assistance or must temporarily step away from your child. TimesLIVE

More than R5m in taxpayers' money spent to fund suspended police salaries — Mchunu
SAPS has spent more than R5m to fund the salaries of 11 suspended police officers over the past three years. This was revealed by police minister Senzo Mchunu in a written reply to a recent parliamentary question by Build One SA (Bosa). By May 16, two lieutenant-generals suspended since 2022 have been paid more than R4m without working. Other officers suspended with full pay include sergeants and constables, with their payments ranging from R35,000 to R56,000 each. Bosa spokesperson Roger Solomons criticised the payments, citing a shortage of police resources to respond to crime. 'This is an affront to every South African living in fear, waiting hours for the police to respond, only to be told there are no vehicles, no officers and no capacity. Meanwhile, senior officers who should be leading the fight against crime are being paid millions to sit at home. 'While communities are under siege, SAPS continues to waste resources on suspended officials instead of bolstering front-line policing.' Mchunu previously said the country has a shortage of detectives, with 2,344 vacant posts. Solomons said this shows SAPS's failure in leadership and accountability. 'A culture that tolerates delayed disciplinary processes, shields incompetence and rewards misconduct cannot deliver safety to the people of South Africa. 'Bosa calls for urgent disciplinary case finalisation for suspended officers and transparency reports every quarter on SAPS suspensions and costs.' TimesLIVE
