John Thrasher, former Florida State president and state House speaker, dies at 81
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — John Thrasher, a former Florida State University president and longtime state legislator, died on Friday. He was 81.
Thrasher, who served as speaker of the Florida House and as a member of the Florida Senate, died Friday morning in Orlando, his family said in a statement. He had been battling cancer, according to a social media post last month from his former lobbying firm.
'John lived a remarkable life — and he made a big difference in the lives of so many in our state,' Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a statement.
Thrasher, a Republican, was a member of the Florida House from 1992-2000, serving as speaker during his last two years. After leaving elected office, he went on to co-found The Southern Group lobbying firm. He was elected to the Florida Senate in 2009 and stayed there until 2014.
'Integrity, perseverance, and strength propelled John to success at every level of public service and private industry,' Florida Senate President Ben Albritton said in a statement. 'His life was rooted in devotion to public service, patriotism, a love of the law, and a passion for education.'
Thrasher served as president of Florida State University from 2014 to 2021. He earned a business degree from the school in 1965, before joining the U.S. Army, where he received the Army Commendation Medal and two Bronze Stars for his service in Vietnam. Following his military service, Thrasher returned to Florida State to earn a law degree in 1972.
'John's love for Florida State University was truly inspiring,' current FSU President Richard McCullough said in statement. 'As an alumnus, legislator, trustee, and president, he devoted his life to elevating FSU's national reputation and helping the university reach new heights in student success, academic excellence, and research.'
A private burial has been planned in Orange Park, near Jacksonville. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Aug. 19 at Florida State in Tallahassee.

Sweet start to summer at Pekin Public Library's Candy Land Adventure
PEKIN, Ill. (WMBD) — Summer kicked off in the sweetest way at the Pekin Public Library, where more than 500 people and families stepped into a life-sized game of Candy Land. The event was the library's Summer Adventure Kickoff Party, and was one of the largest turnouts in the library's history. Library staff say the goal was to spark joy, bring the community together, and encourage a love of reading as summer begins. 'It's very important because then they can keep up on their reading skills,' said Catrina Klassen, Head of Youth Services at Pekin Public Library. 'So then when they go into the school year, next year they're ready to go. And then teachers don't have to go back and re-teach some of those skills so that they can keep up on those skills throughout the summer.' The event was held on Saturday, May 31, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., which had the library transformed into a colorful, candy-themed wonderland to launch its annual Summer Reading Program with imagination and excitement. Children followed a rainbow path through the library, picking up their Summer Reading Game Cards and exploring a magical land of sweet surprises. Families enjoyed a day packed with fun, including a bouncy house, balloon artists, interactive games, and meet-and-greet moments with Sonic and Mario, adding to the excitement for kids of all ages. Klassen also explained the motivation behind this year's program theme. 'Illinois does like a summer reading theme for all the libraries, so 'Level Up' was the whole thing for the state of Illinois, which I think is a great motivator because kids love games. So this is a great way to get them to want to read.' Whether bouncing, reading, or racing through Candy Land, families left with big smiles — and even bigger stacks of books. ‘Resolved peacefully': Madison Heights barricaded gunman over, city says
The city of Madison Heights says a barricaded gunman situation on 13 Mile is over after the suspect surrendered peacefully. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office confirmed SWAT was called to a barricaded gunman in Madison Heights, near 13 Mile and John R. The call came in around 2 p.m. in Madison Heights where a man barricaded himself inside an apartment at Madison Woods West. The sheriff said it was called to the scene about an hour later. At 4 p.m., the city of Madison Heights said the situation was over and had been "resolved peacefully." "The subject is in custody, and the situation has been resolved without injury. The area around 13 Mile and John R is now clear," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said on social media. No other details were released. This is the second standoff in metro Detroit in the past 24 hours. On Friday, police in Allen Park were called to a gas station where a man armed with a knife was barricaded inside. Authorities ultimately pulled the door open and were able to arrest the man without anyone getting hurt.

Man sues Walt Disney World over Florida water slide's ‘exhilarating speeds'
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Walt Disney World is facing a lawsuit after a man was hurt on a high-speed water slide at its Blizzard Beach water park, according to a complaint filed Thursday. The lawsuit claimed that the man, Eugene Strickland, had visited the water park in July 2021 to try out the Downhill Double Dipper slide. According to the lawsuit, Strickland weighed about 334 pounds at the time, exceeding the slide's weight limit of 300 pounds. Buc-ee's sues Florida store over knockoff merchandise However, Strickland got on the ride and 'became momentarily airborne as a result of the ride's 'exhilarating speeds' and design,' the lawsuit claimed. Strickland said he forcefully landed onto the hard plastic surface of the slide, suffering 'permanent catastrophic injuries.' He accused Walt Disney World of negligence and failing to maintain safe premises. He argued that Disney had a responsibility to fix the water slide's 'dangerous conditions.'
