Surrey police launch counter-extortion team amid growing fears
The Surrey Police Service says in a statement that it is working with provincial and national RCMP to help in their investigations, as numerous Canadian police agencies have reported similar crimes.
Police say they've had 10 complaints over the last six months of people getting letters, phone calls or social media messages demanding money under threats of violence.
The service says it has launched its own extortion investigations team and will be attending a public safety forum on Sunday in the city organized by members of the South Asian community.

Similar extortion threats emerged last year and violence that followed included arsons and shootings, which police in Ontario, Alberta and B.C. said were linked to organized crime in the Indian state of Punjab.

Surrey Police Chief Norm Lipinski says it's important to tackle the trend of extortions head-on, but it's equally important to collaborate with victims and the broader community to deal with it together.

RCMP Chief Supt. Wendy Mehat, with the Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit, says they are concerned there may be more victims who have complied with demands and haven't gone to police.
'We discourage anyone from responding to such demands. Officers are working to prevent these traumatizing situations and to holding those responsible to account.'

RCMP release photo of white car that could have a connection with P.E.I. shooting
Social Sharing RCMP have released a photo of a car they say "may be connected" to an incident in western P.E.I. that killed a man and injured a Summerside woman who later died in hospital. "The vehicle is a white 2007 Honda Accord, 4-door sedan, [and] could have had PEI licence plate 202NX," the police force said in a news release late Wednesday. The news release did not say whether the car is believed to be connected to the perpetrator or to a possible witness. They have said a targeted shooting into a car on a dirt section of the road killed a 35-year-old man who was believed to be driving a 2008 Toyota Corolla, and led the car to roll over and hit a utility pole. The female passenger, 50, was seriously injured in the crash and later died. Police have said they believe another vehicle was on Hackmatack Road at the time, and a perpetrator fled the scene. No arrests have been made. "These incidents are uncommon in our province, and they are certainly unsettling. We take this very seriously and extensive police resources have been deployed to this investigation," Cpl. Gavin Moore, the media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP, said at a media briefing Monday. "Police do have many leads to investigate." RCMP have not identified either of the dead people. P.E.I. RCMP adds underwater recovery team to fatal shooting investigation
The RCMP is using its underwater recovery team to help investigate last week's fatal shooting in Urbainville, P.E.I. Police responded to reports of shots fired into a vehicle on Route 125 (Hackmatack Road) around 8 p.m. on Aug. 8. They said a vehicle involved in the incident seemed to have crashed into a ditch, hitting a telephone pole. A 35-year-old old unidentified man, who officers believe was the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he was injured by the shots fired. A 50-year-old Summerside woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries and later died. Police say the shooting was a targeted and isolated incident. Underwater search team deployed The RCMP's underwater recovery team was deployed on Thursday to search waters in and around the island. The team specializes in underwater recovery operations. 'Along with the extensive resources police agencies across PEI are providing to this investigation, being able to bring in the URT team increases the areas PEI RCMP can search for evidence,' said media relations officer Cpl.
