Yankees get Stanton back as Judge tests throwing arm that could hinder him all season, Boone says
Article content
Boone said there is no timetable on a fielding return for Judge, who might not return to full health this season.

Article content
'I don't think we're going to see him throwing like he normally does at any point this year, but that's OK,' Boone said. 'We've got to feel like he can go out there and protect himself.'
Article content
Judge has been limited to being a designated hitter since being activated from the injured list on Aug. 5.
Article content
'I don't know yet,' Boone said about Judge's return to the field. 'What I've said is I'm waiting on the trainers to say, 'Thumbs up.' He's expected to long toss again today, so I don't expect it here in Tampa. Could it be Boston? Maybe. I just don't know yet.'
The Yankees are coming off a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals and hold a three-game lead for the final American League wild-card spot. Offensively, they will be satisfied if Judge can simply remain productive at the plate. He entered the week batting .333 with 39 home runs, 91 RBIs and a 1.134 OPS, all among the league leaders. His home run Sunday was his first extra-base hit since returning.
Article content
Judge's inability to play the field has reduced the team's flexibility. Stanton is batting .299 with 12 home runs, 34 RBIs and a .953 OPS this season, but his long injury history makes any outfield assignment a risk. He did not debut until mid-June because of tendinitis in both elbows. After playing three straight games in the outfield last week, he missed three consecutive games with soreness. He has declined to specify where the discomfort occurred.

Blue Jays manage just three hits, meekly drop two of three to lowly Pirates
The next time someone wants to talk about a soft spot in the Blue Jays schedule, hit mute. Article content And if you don't, expect Toronto manager John Schneider to do it for you. Article content Article content What was anticipated (by some) to be a midweek walkover against the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates turned into a meek effort by the visiting Jays, who dropped two of three to the NL Central basement dwellers in a series they best forget quickly. Article content An indifferent afternoon Wednesday at PNC Park, one that resulted in a 2-1 loss, finished it off for the Jays. At least they are still comfortably atop the AL East standings, but it sure felt like they squandered an opportunity to enhance that status. Article content To add a little dig to the proceedings, the main damage was done by the Pirates' Tommy Pham, who did his talking at the plate rather than chirping on the diamond and social media. Article content Starting with a #SpringerDinger 😎 — Toronto Blue Jays (@BlueJays) August 20, 2025 Article content A two-run double in the first inning by the Pirates outfielder gave them all the runs they would need, quickly erasing a home run by George Springer, the first batter of the game. Article content The Jays were their own worst enemies, however, managing just three hits against a Pirates team that had a minus-88 run differential entering Wednesday's game. Article content There will be no panic for a Jays team well versed in letting a poor effort be forgotten not long after the final out. But the three-gamer has to feel like an opportunity frittered away, despite all the good they've done, to build on a 74-54 record and what at game's end had them 4 1/2 games up on the Yankees for the division lead. Article content That said, it's the fourth time the Jays have dropped a series to a last-place team this season, an annoying blip in their overall record. In July, they dropped two of three to the Athletics and three of four to the Orioles. In June, they lost two of three to the White Sox. Article content None of those results — including the most recent one — are a cause for concern, of course. But they have to be at least an irritating development for a team that can smell the opportunity it has created for itself by having so much success against better teams. Article content Article content Article content Article content Schneider's managerial skills are being put to the test with healthy bodies coming back into the fold, the latest being Shane Bieber's scheduled Blue Jays debut on Friday in Miami. Article content Not so fast. Schneider told reporters in Pittsburgh that it is a 'mostly fluid' situation, while adding that Lauer would be available out of the bullpen on the weekend. Of course, if he isn't used that also means he could slip back into the rotation as soon as the next time through if needed. Article content The eyebrow-raiser would be that Jose Berrios, struggling of late, is back in for Saturday. But the Jays and Schneider have such respect for the professionalism of Berrios that they likely believe he's earned the right to work his way out of those struggles. For now, anyway.

Shire: Midseason nominations for Roughriders player awards
Article content After suffering a season-ending injury near the start of last season, the 35-year-old veteran has been an anchor at right tackle this season, which is exactly what the Roughriders were hoping for when they lured him from Winnipeg in free agency last year. Article content Article content In a veteran-heavy lineup, there aren't a lot of options when it comes to naming Saskatchewan's top rookie. Article content Since receiver Joe Robustelli suited up for one regular season game last year, he's ineligible for the top rookie award this year. That leaves left tackle Payton Collins as the man leading the way this year. Article content After fellow left tackle Trevor Reid earned this award last year before leaving for an NFL opportunity, the Roughriders were left to fill the position with another rookie this season. Article content In stepped Collins, who has drawn rave reviews from his coaches and teammates for his work at left tackle. Even though he missed seven weeks with an injury, if Collins continues to hold down the blindside for the second half of the season, he should earn the most votes at the end of the year. Article content Article content Although he's been limited to five games, returner Mario Alford is still the front-runner for this award in the first half in what's been a resurgent season for the veteran. Along with a game-winning, 99-yard kickoff return, Alford has been a special teams spark when he's been in the lineup. Article content If he returns early in the second half of the season, he will get plenty of votes at the end of the year. But if he misses more time, we may have to look elsewhere and it's about time long snapper Jorgen Hus gets some recognition. Article content The longest-serving member of the Roughriders has done everything that has been asked of him and more as he continues to be among the league's most reliable players at his position. 'Woke' Minnesota Vikings face backlash after male cheerleaders join squad
The Minnesota Vikings have been slammed for adding two male cheerleaders to its team of sideline supporters. Article content 'If you're going to be woke, and if you're going to try to take the men out of men's sports, which is what they're doing, they're trying to take gender and try and make it more about gender than about masculinity, then you're going to have a huge problem.' Article content Tuberville continued: 'You can see Minnesota doing it, they're one of the blue states, we've lost them, and they're more into socialism and it's about 150 genders. But at the end of the day, I hope to God it doesn't come South.' Article content However, the Vikings are standing by their decision and showing their full support for the additions. Article content 'While many fans may be seeing male cheerleaders for the first time at Vikings games, male cheerleaders have been part of previous Vikings teams and have long been associated with collegiate and professional cheerleading,' the team said in a statement, via Article content 'In 2025, approximately one third of NFL teams have male cheerleaders,' the team continued. Article content Article content 'Every member of the Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders program has an impressive dance background and went through the same rigorous audition process,' they added. Article content 'Individuals were selected because of their talent, passion for dance and dedication to elevating the game day experience.'
