Dia Mirza recalls traumatic pregnancy and son's ICU battle: ‘He weighed just 810 grams, had life-saving surgery at 36 hours old'
Dia Mirza
has opened up about the traumatic experience of giving birth to her son, Avyaan Azaad Rekhi, who was born prematurely in 2021. In a recent interview with Official People of India, Dia revealed the emotional and medical challenges she faced during her high-risk pregnancy, and how both she and her baby's lives were hanging by a thread at one point.
'My body was going into sepsis… it was quite scary'
The Nadaaniyan actor, who embraced motherhood at the age of 39, said she had always dreamed of becoming a mother, but things unfolded much later than expected. She conceived in what she described as a 'crazy situation' and developed severe complications during the sixth month of her pregnancy. 'I developed an acute bacterial infection, which could have been a side effect of my appendix surgery during the fifth month,' Dia shared.
'By the end of my sixth month, we realised my placenta was haemorrhaging and my body was going into sepsis. If the baby wasn't delivered, neither of us could be saved. It was quite scary.'
Dia recalled being rushed to the hospital while lying in the backseat of her car. Her gynaecologist urged her to trust him, and in that moment, all she could think of was saving her child. Avyaan was born weighing only 810 grams and was immediately taken to the ICU.
Dia herself was on IV antibiotics while her newborn fought for life.
The situation grew more alarming when doctors found the infection inside her was life-threatening. 'Avyaan had to go through life-saving surgery 36 hours after he was born. My son had a hole in his intestine… they put a stoma on him — they basically pulled the intestine out of the body and it was an exposed stoma,' she revealed.
'I was allowed to visit him only twice a week'
Despite being a new mother, Dia had limited access to her child.
She was only allowed to see him twice a week and couldn't even hold him until he gained enough weight. "I brought him home for exactly 20 days, and no nurse was willing to touch him because it was a really terrifying visual. So I handled the dressing," she added. Once Avyaan crossed 3.5 kg, he underwent a second surgery to correct the stoma.
'Don't scare her': Dia Mirza gets miffed with paps for clicking her daughter
Dia married businessman Vaibhav Rekhi in 2021, the same year they welcomed Avyaan. She also has a stepdaughter, Samaira Rekhi, from Vaibhav's previous marriage. Earlier, Dia was married to producer Sahil Sangha, but the couple separated in 2019.
On the work front, Dia was recently seen in Nadaaniyan, where she played the mother of Ibrahim Ali Khan. The film also starred Khushi Kapoor, Jugal Hansraj, Suniel Shetty, and Mahima Chaudhary.

Incorporate Lotus Stem In Your Diet Today To Achieve These Health Benefits
Lotus stem, also known as kamal kakdi in Hindi, is the long, cylindrical stalk of the lotus plant that grows underwater and is commonly used in Asian and Indian cuisines. It has a crisp texture and a mildly sweet, earthy flavour. Rich in dietary fibre, vitamins like C and B6, potassium, iron, and antioxidants, lotus stem is highly nutritious. When consumed as part of a balanced diet, it can contribute to better digestion, blood circulation, immunity, and even skin health. Its low calorie and high fibre content make it especially beneficial for weight management and overall wellness. In this article, we discuss the many benefits of lotus stem. 10 Ways lotus stem can boost health 1. Improves digestion Lotus stem is high in dietary fibre, which adds bulk to the stool and promotes regular bowel movements. This helps prevent constipation and supports a healthy gut. Fibre also encourages the growth of good gut bacteria, enhancing nutrient absorption and digestive efficiency. 2. Supports heart health Rich in potassium, lotus stem helps regulate blood pressure by balancing sodium levels and relaxing blood vessels. This can reduce the strain on the heart and lower the risk of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. 3. Boosts immunity The vitamin C content in lotus stem strengthens the immune system by enhancing the production of white blood cells and acting as a powerful antioxidant. It protects the body against infections, colds, and oxidative stress caused by free radicals. 4. Aids in weight management Being low in calories and fat yet high in fibre, lotus stem keeps you full for longer periods, curbing unnecessary hunger pangs. This helps reduce overall calorie intake and supports healthy weight loss or maintenance. 5. Enhances skin health Lotus stem contains vitamin C and polyphenols, which help combat oxidative damage to the skin. These nutrients support collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, giving the skin a healthy glow. 6. Improves blood circulation Iron and copper present in lotus stem support the production of red blood cells, improving oxygen delivery throughout the body. This helps prevent fatigue, boosts energy levels, and promotes healthy skin tone. 7. Manages blood sugar levels The fibre in lotus stem slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, preventing spikes in blood glucose levels. This makes it a useful addition to the diets of those managing diabetes or insulin resistance. 8. Reduces inflammation Lotus stem contains anti-inflammatory compounds like flavonoids and alkaloids, which may help reduce chronic inflammation in the body. This can be particularly beneficial for people dealing with arthritis, metabolic syndrome, or inflammatory gut issues. 9. Supports liver function Some compounds in lotus stem, especially antioxidants and polyphenols, help detoxify the liver by neutralising toxins and reducing oxidative damage. A healthier liver means better metabolism and improved overall health. 10. Improves mental function B vitamins such as vitamin B6 found in lotus stem are known to aid in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. This can help regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and support better cognitive functioning over time. Lotus stem is not just a delicious addition to curries, stir-fries, and pickles, it's a functional food that can contribute to holistic health when consumed regularly as part of a balanced diet. R.S. Prasanna feels some form of anxiety is required during creative process
Director R.S. Prasanna, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film 'Sitaare Zameen Par', feels that some form of anxiety is needed in the creative process. The director recently spoke with IANS ahead of the release of his film, which features Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan in the lead role. Speaking with IANS, Prasanna said, "The beauty of creation is the driving force for me, the anxiety is a friend, it will be there, but if you are driven only by anxiety, I don't think you can create. I think creative energy, if it wins over anxiety, that's when a creation happens. Like 'Inside Out' movie, it was said so beautifully that anxiety is like the correct balance between acceleration and braking. So if you don't accelerate, you can't move, if you don't have a brake, you'll have an accident. So you need both". He also shared his experience of working with Aamir in the film, as he said, "I feel that Aamir sir, and I can speak certainly for myself, he's worked with the best of the best directors, but I can speak for myself, that Aamir sir's magic is that he makes you a better filmmaker than what you are at the beginning of the film". Sitaare Zameen Par | Title Track "He makes you a better filmmaker. And I think the reason for that is, he constantly wants to be better than, you know, what he was yesterday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo And constantly keeping only the film in focus", he added. Earlier, Prasanna had told IANS that human beings will soon catch up with the technological changes in filmmaking. The director said that one cannot stop the march of technology and one has to adapt. The audience will demand a change, the filmmakers will rise, the technological change will happen as it should, and experiments will keep happening, some will click, some will not. He said earlier, "But I think one thing which will never change is the way our hearts beat, so as long as the heart is there in everything, the visual is only pixels, the sound is only decibels, but that feeling, that soul, that is, as long as we have a heart, stories told by humans will always be relevant". Produced by Aamir Khan under his banner, Aamir Khan Productions, 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is set to release in cinemas on June 20, 2025.
