Dia Mirza welcomed her baby boy Avyaan in 2021 and in a recent interview, Dia opened up about her complicated delivery as her son had to be pulled out in her sixth month and had to undergo life-saving surgery just 36 hours after he was born at 810 grams. She also shared that they had to make difficult decisions in a matter of seconds but Dia's priority through this was her child. 'I was the least of my priorities. I said, 'Save my kid,'' she said. In a chat shared on the YouTube channel of Official People of India, Dia shared that she was always an 'extremely maternal person, right from my childhood' and if it was upto her, she 'would have had a baby when I was 26, but life had different plans for me and I finally conceived when I was 39.' She then recalled her son's birth and said that it was a very 'crazy situation' as 'it was a very complicated delivery.' Dia Mirza shared that she 'developed a very acute bacterial infection' and at the end of her sixth month of pregnancy, 'we discovered my placenta was hemorrhaging and that was my body was going into sepsis, and if the baby was not pulled out, neither of us would have been saved. It was quite scary.' She recalled that they had to make decisions in a matter of seconds and at this point, her gynecologist told her that 'this is the best thing for your child.' When reminded that it was perhaps the best thing for her as well, Dia said, 'I was the least of my priorities. I said, 'Save my kid' because I so wanted this child.' 'I was on IV antibiotics for 21 days and Avyaan had to go through life saving surgery 36 hours after he was born,' Dia shared as she explained that her son had a perforation in his intestine when he was born. The actor shared that since this was in the middle of the pandemic, she was only allowed to visit her son in the NICU twice a week. 'I could not hold my child till he was 2.5 kgs,' she shared. Dia recalled that she brought her son home for 20 days and had to take him for another surgery when he was 3.5 kgs. When asked how she gathered the strength to go through all of this with her son, Dia shared, 'Strength… I think it comes from… Because I loved him so much and I wanted him so much. I didn't, for a second, believe that he would leave me. And I had implicit faith in the universe that if I got him after so many years, after so many prayers, then he won't leave me. And I tapped into every prayer I had access to. I remember listening to Mahamrityunjaya Mantra on repeat, praying to every master there is to protect him and keep him safe. I really think there is an energy that transfers… Avyaan gave me indescribable strength. He just did. I didn't feel fear for a fraction of a second through that entire period. I never once felt that something bad could happen to him. I was like, whatever it is, we are going to get through it, we will be fine. I still feel like that.' Dia's son Avyaan recently celebrated his fourth birthday.

Dia Mirza recalls traumatic pregnancy and son's ICU battle: ‘He weighed just 810 grams, had life-saving surgery at 36 hours old'

Dia Mirza has opened up about the traumatic experience of giving birth to her son, Avyaan Azaad Rekhi, who was born prematurely in 2021. In a recent interview with Official People of India, Dia revealed the emotional and medical challenges she faced during her high-risk pregnancy, and how both she and her baby's lives were hanging by a thread at one point. 'My body was going into sepsis… it was quite scary' The Nadaaniyan actor, who embraced motherhood at the age of 39, said she had always dreamed of becoming a mother, but things unfolded much later than expected. She conceived in what she described as a 'crazy situation' and developed severe complications during the sixth month of her pregnancy. 'I developed an acute bacterial infection, which could have been a side effect of my appendix surgery during the fifth month,' Dia shared. 'By the end of my sixth month, we realised my placenta was haemorrhaging and my body was going into sepsis. If the baby wasn't delivered, neither of us could be saved. It was quite scary.' Dia recalled being rushed to the hospital while lying in the backseat of her car. Her gynaecologist urged her to trust him, and in that moment, all she could think of was saving her child. Avyaan was born weighing only 810 grams and was immediately taken to the ICU. Dia herself was on IV antibiotics while her newborn fought for life. The situation grew more alarming when doctors found the infection inside her was life-threatening. 'Avyaan had to go through life-saving surgery 36 hours after he was born. My son had a hole in his intestine… they put a stoma on him — they basically pulled the intestine out of the body and it was an exposed stoma,' she revealed. 'I was allowed to visit him only twice a week' Despite being a new mother, Dia had limited access to her child. She was only allowed to see him twice a week and couldn't even hold him until he gained enough weight. "I brought him home for exactly 20 days, and no nurse was willing to touch him because it was a really terrifying visual. So I handled the dressing," she added. Once Avyaan crossed 3.5 kg, he underwent a second surgery to correct the stoma. Dia Mirza shares hilarious nickname from stepdaughter: 'Dia, not yet the evil stepmother'

Dia Mirza , who married businessman Vaibhav Rekhi in 2021, often shares heartwarming glimpses of her family life on social media. Recently, she candidly opened up about her relationship with her stepdaughter, Samaira Rekhi, humorously recalling the unique "stepmom" title Samaira has given her, which comes with a witty and sassy twist. Challenging fairy tale biases In a recent interview with Official People of India, Dia reflected on her own experience growing up with a stepfather, Ahmed Mirza. She shared that her limited exposure to traditional fairy tales actually helped her avoid common biases against step-parents. According to Dia, these stories often perpetuate the notion that "stepfathers and stepmothers are always evil." This personal reflection immediately brought to mind her stepdaughter, Samaira Rekhi. Dia revealed, 'Which brings me to Samaira, who has saved my number on her phone as - Dia, not yet the evil stepmother. That's what fairy tales do, right? I wonder if she's changed the description under my name.' This playful revelation highlights how Samaira is playfully navigating the conventional, often negative, stereotypes associated with step-parents. A moving bond with her own stepfather The Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein actress also shared a poignant memory with her own stepfather. She recounted how, as a child, she instinctively began calling him 'abba' soon after her mother married him, embracing him wholeheartedly. Dia shared that her stepfather was not overtly expressive or physically affectionate. However, she noted that they eventually "turned him into a hugger." She movingly recalled their last meeting before his demise in 2003. "I remember the last time I met him in Hyderabad before I went to an overseas shoot, during which time he passed away. I'll never forget the hug he gave me and the tears he had in his eyes as he said goodbye,' she shared, underscoring the deep emotional bond they shared.
