Nagercoil Corporation's drinking water tax, deposit hike draws flak
Following the footsteps of Tirunelveli Corporation, the urban civic body of Nagercoil has also resolved to steeply hike the water tax only to draw the public ire and stiff resistance from the politicians affiliated to the AIADMK and the BJP.
In the council meeting held here on Tuesday, the Corporation decided to increase the drinking water connection deposit and the monthly tax based on the plinth area of the houses or the commercial establishments. The AIADMK and the BJP councillors walked out of the council meeting in protest.
Kanniyakumari MLA and former minister N. Thalavai Sundaram of AIADMK has criticised the Corporation's decision to upwardly revise the water tax and the deposits for getting drinking water connection
He said in a statement that residents of the newly annexed areas like Thengampudhur in Kanniyakumari Assembly constituency and Aalur in Colachel Assembly segment would also have to pay this hiked tax and the deposit even though no project for giving drinking water connections to the residents had been implemented in these two areas under the AMRUT scheme.
Terming the Corporation's decision as 'anti-people', Mr. Thalavai Sundaram said the Stalin-led Tamil Nadu Government, after 'torturing the public' by hiking power tariff, property tax, vacant land tax etc., had landed another punch on the face of the public in the form of water tax increase.
As per the Nagercoil Corporation's decision, ₹5,000 would be collected as deposit from a house built with the plinth area of 600 square feet and this amount would be ₹10,000 for government offices, commercial establishments, factories and the educational institutions.
When the plinth area goes up to 601 sq.ft and 1,200 sq.ft, the deposit would be ₹7,500 and ₹15,000 respectively for houses and other non-residential establishments. And, the deposit would be ₹10,000 for houses and ₹20,000 for other structures (from 1,201 sq ft to 1,800 sq.ft), ₹12,000 for houses and ₹25,000 for other structures (from 1,801 sq ft to 2,400 sq.ft).
The monthly drinking water tax has also been revised. While ₹120 a month will be collected for 10,000 litres of water a month from the houses, others will have to pay ₹360 a month. For every 1,000 litre over the 10,000 litre, ₹18 will be collected and this amount will be ₹54 for other non-residential establishments. This amount will increase based on the plinth area of the property from ₹140 a month (600 sq.ft) for houses to ₹180 a month (2,400 sq.ft). And, the amount to be collected for every 1,000 litre water consumed over the 10,000 litres will attract more tax ranging up to ₹27 per every 1,000 litre.
'The resolution passed by the Nagercoil Corporation on Tuesday will also compel those who have already paid the deposit to give the revised deposit amount. The people, who have been hit hard by inflation and the unprecedented hike in other taxes and tariff, will put an end to this atrocity very soon,' Mr. Thalavai Sundaram said.

BJP's Jiwan Gupta files papers for Ludhiana West bypoll
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jiwan Gupta filed his nomination papers on Monday for the Ludhiana West bypoll scheduled for June 19. He was accompanied by state BJP chief Sunil Jakhar, Union minister of state for railways and food processing industries Ravneet Singh Bittu, and senior BJP leaders Vijay Rupani, and Rajneesh Dhiman. The district BJP president was also present. Jakhar said the Ludhiana West bypoll is an opportunity for voters to 'give a fitting reply to the anti-people policies of the AAP government.' He stated, 'Punjab wants change once again, and this change will start from Ludhiana West. What's happening today is not governance for Punjabis—it's remote-controlled from Delhi. Corruption is rampant under AAP.' Bittu echoed Jakhar's sentiments, saying, 'This time, the BJP high command has placed its faith in a grassroots-level leader with over 35 years of service in the party. If Jeewan Gupta wins, no one can stop the developmental wave in Ludhiana West.' Gupta, BJP candidate and a long-time party worker, expressed confidence about winning the seat by a significant margin. 'We will win with a big lead. For three and a half years, people have seen nothing but corruption, the rise of drugs, and unchecked sand mining under the current regime. The people are ready to write a new chapter from Ludhiana West,' he said, while highlighting the public's warmth and support during his door-to-door campaign. Jakhar alleged that 'Delhi's people have hijacked Punjab's government,' referring to the increasing influence of AAP's Delhi leaders in the state. Bittu, urged voters to deliver a decisive victory for BJP candidate Gupta in the upcoming byelection. Bittu emphasized that a win here could set the momentum for forming a BJP government in Punjab in 2027. Speaking at a gathering of party workers and leaders in Ludhiana, Bittu called the byelection a golden opportunity for BJP to demonstrate its growing strength in Punjab. 'This election is our chance to send a clear message to both the party leadership and the people of Punjab that the state is aligned with the vision and leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' he said. Addressing the delay in ticket declaration, Bittu explained that the party's central leadership was focused on 'Operation Sindoor' against Pakistan. Eventually, Gupta — a loyal party worker with over 30 years of grassroots service — was chosen. Highlighting ongoing central government support, Bittu reminded the people that even during his tenure as a Congress MP, Ludhiana benefited from significant development initiatives like the Smart City project, an international airport, and a world-class railway station — all funded by the Centre. Criticising AAP, Bittu remarked on the party's inability to field a local volunteer, and instead opting to award the ticket to political heavyweights. 'It's ironic — AAP couldn't find a single committed volunteer from Ludhiana,' he said. He also took a swipe at Congress, highlighting the party's 'internal disarray after controversial inductions of certain leaders'. 'Even the Punjab Congress president denied being informed about the new joinings,' Bittu added. While addressing the media, Bittu said that under 'Operation Sindoor' the Indian forces have targeted terrorist establishments 300 km inside Pakistan under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'To pay gratitude for the 'Operation Sindoor' we can cast our vote for the BJP candidate,' he said. Former cabinet minister Dr Harbans Lal was also present on the occasion. To bolster the campaign, BJP has deployed a team of star campaigners including Union ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Anurag Thakur, along with senior leaders, including former MP Avinash Rai Khanna, ex-state president Ashwani Sharma, former minister Manoranjan Kalia, MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and party co-incharge Narinder Singh Raina.

After All-Party Op Sindoor Teams Return, Will It Be Congress Vs Congress In Parliament?
Last Updated: The bonhomie among members of the all-party teams and support for Operation Sindoor have raised the question if the Congress-led opposition will be effective in the next session The Congress and other opposition parties like the Trinamool Congress are gearing up for the big fight as soon as Parliament is in session. But, there is a catch. The bonhomie among members of the all-party teams that the central government sent abroad and their strong words of support for Operation Sindoor has raised a question: Will this camaraderie be a hurdle in the opposition's fight to make things tough for the Prime Minister and government in Parliament? The PM plans to meet the delegation members once they are back from their trips. Their diplomatic efforts will be appreciated while the camaraderie shown outside India could spill over once the session begins. The Congress, for example, is certainly geared up to ask the PM some questions, led by leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge. They want to know if the US mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan; what the progress is so far in the investigation into the Pahalgam terror attack; and if India suffered any casualties during the military standoff? Significantly, some Congress leaders representing the delegations – Salman Khurshid, Manish Tewari, and Shashi Tharoor – have completely rejected the possibility of a US mediation. In this situation, with these leaders clearly taking a stand different from the party's, the Centre will certainly use them to counter-question the Congress. What has become even more embarrassing for the Congress is that Khurshid, who has a better standing in the party than Tharoor has now, has also wondered insinuations are being made about their stand for the nation. For these leaders, having stood by the government over allegations made by the Congress, it will be difficult for them to agree with what Gandhi has to say about Operation Sindoor. Many see the idea of sending out the delegations as an ace move from the government, which has been repeatedly asked to hold a special session on Pahalgam attack as well as India's subsequent action against Pakistan. These multi-party teams have come as a massive boost for the government, especially as it wants to counter the Congress narrative that is trying to project Narendra Modi as a weak PM. The confusion within the Congress, however, will not only weaken its battle in Parliament but also shows how weak its top leadership is with multiple voices contradicting the official party stand. Not just this, it also shows the iron grip that the Gandhis once had may be loosening.

More white South Africans arrive in US as new refugee programme begins
A second group of white South Africans has arrived in the United States under a refugee programme announced by the Trump administration, officials and advocacy groups said Monday. Nine people, including families and children, arrived late last week, said Jaco Kleynhans, head of international liaison at the Solidarity Movement, a group representing members of South Africa's white Afrikaner minority. The group travelled on a commercial flight, he said. A spokesperson for the US Embassy said in an email to The Associated Press that refugees continue to arrive in the United States from South Africa on commercial flights as part of the Afrikaner resettlement programme's ongoing operations. An initial group of 59 white South Africans arrived at Dulles International Airport in Virginia on a chartered flight last month under the new programme announced by US President Donald Trump in February. The Trump administration fast-tracked the resettlement of white South Africans after indefinitely suspending other US refugee programmes. The Trump administration said it is offering refugee status to white South Africans it alleges are being persecuted by their Black-led government and are victims of racially motivated violence. The South African government has denied the allegations and said they are a mischaracterisation of the country. Trump has falsely claimed that white South African farmers are targeted in widespread attacks that amount to genocide and are having their land taken away. Trump confronted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa with those baseless claims during a meeting at the White House last month. Ramaphosa has said the relatively small number of attacks on white farmers are part of South Africa's larger problems with violent crime, which affects all races. The Trump administration initially said the refugee programme was aimed at members of South Africa's Afrikaner minority, who are descendants of mainly Dutch and French colonial settlers. In new guidance published by the US Embassy last month, applicants must be a member of a racial minority in South Africa and must be able to articulate a past experience of persecution or fear of future persecution. There are approximately 2.7 million Afrikaners among South Africa's population of 62 million, which is more than 80 per cent Black. They are not the only white minority. There are around 4.5 million whites in total, including those with British or other heritage. The US Embassy spokesperson said the US continues to review inquiries from individuals who have expressed interest to the embassy in resettling to the United States and is reaching out to eligible individuals for refugee interviews and processing". While US officials have not said how many South Africans have applied to be relocated, Kleynhans said there have been around 8,000 applications. Another group helping white South Africans apply for refugee status has said tens of thousands have applied.
