Poor Creature: All Smiles Tonight review
Poor Creature comprises three musicians expert in heightening and managing atmosphere: Landless's Ruth Clinton, Lankum's Cormac MacDiarmada plus live Lankum drummer John Dermody. Their debut album steeps cowboy songs, Irish ballads, bluegrass and other traditional songs in a misty, playful lightness that somehow also carries an eerie power. Bury Me Not is a 19th-century American song about a dying sailor desperate not to be buried at sea, and Clinton delivers its lamenting lyrics with a bright, shining innocence. MacDiarmada leads Lorene, a rolling, country ballad by Alabama duo the Louvin Brothers, with a similarly soft, brooding magic. Singing as a boy desperate for a letter from his beloved, despite clearly knowing he's being ghosted, the song's melancholy slowly rises as voice and guitar mesh together.
Preprogrammed beats from a Hohner Organetta (a mid-century table-top organ), the wails of an Otamatone (a 21st-century Japanese synthesiser, shaped like a musical quaver) and a theremin add childlike, hauntological flavours to much of this music. Meat and muscle are also built into Hicks' Farewell, a Doc Watson song fed through a sturdy wall of shoegaze, and propulsive highlight, The Whole Town Knows. Within Clinton and MacDiarmada's dense harmonies, Dermody's drums and the track's cacophonous final minutes, you sense folk rocketing somewhere poppy, wild and new.
A folk duo who also work in cabaret, performance, and installation art, Lunatraktors collect together six years of collaborative work on their new compilation, Quilting Points: Invitations and Open Calls 2019-2025 (self-released). A loud mix of salvaged songs, archival fragments, chaos and energetic ideas, its most intriguing tracks are the Korg-propelled 'Oss Girls, inspired by the Padstow May Day song, and The Truth of Eanswythe's Bones, a twisted choral epic inspired by the discovery of a skeleton of a 7th-century saint. Clàrsach (Celtic harp) player Grace Stewart-Skinner's Auchies Spikkin' Auchie (self-released) is a moving, textured exploration of the stories and dialect of her north-east Highlands harbour village, Avoch, mixing her playing with field-recorded conversations, fiddle, double bass and drums. Toby Hay's gorgeous New Music for the 6 String Guitar (The State51 Conspiracy) also further confirms him as a warm, 21st-century heir to the string-bending genius of John Fahey.

The Irish golfing legend has scooped millions during an illustrious career which has seen him become a five-time major winner and a household name in the world of sport. McIlroy shot onto the scene some 18 years ago, earning himself a spot on the PGA Tour at the age of just 18 in 2007. He soon came into some huge winnings thanks to his exploits on courses across the DP World Tour, winning $20,520 for a T-42 finish at the British Masters, $286,769 at the Alred Dunhill Cup and another $56,425 at the Madrid Open. But only now has McIlroy revealed that he spent his first earnings on what he described as 'the worst purchase ever' - a diamond encrusted watch. Speaking ahead of this weekend's BMW Championship, he told reporters: 'I only had a debit card at the time and I checked my balance. 'I was like "Holy", I went straight to the jeweller.' When asked if he remembers what he spent the money on, McIlroy chuckled: 'Yes, a watch with diamonds around it. It was horrific. 'I can't believe it, it was like the worst purchase ever. It was so bad! 'It's not the make and model that I'm sponsored by now, so I'm not going to say it!' But after hearing McIlory's admission, curious fans began investigating what exactly the 'horrific' watch was. Instagram user @golfprojects was the first to identify the glitzy wristwear, claiming the golfer splashed out his earnings on a 2007 Breitling Chronomat Evolution featuring a diamond bezel and a MOP dial. Indeed, pictures of McIlroy from the 2009 Dubai Desert Classic show him sporting what supporters believe is the watch, and it's just as eye-catching as he described. Elsewhere in the press conference, McIlroy made headlines as he shot down the idea of captaining Team Europe in the upcoming Ryder Cup. As one of Europe's most decorated players, he had often been tipped as a natural leader in waiting. Since making his debut in 2010, McIlroy has been part of five victorious European teams. He however revealed that he has turned down an offer to captain the team at Bethpage Black in September. 'No, I've been asked to do that, and I've turned it down,' he said. 'The idea of me being a playing captain sometime soon came up, and I shot it down straight away.' When asked why, McIlroy replied: 'Because I don't think you can do it.' The Northern Irishman explained that the modern Ryder Cup captain's role has expanded far beyond what fans see during the three days of competition. 'It's just the commitments that a captain has that week,' he added. 'You think about the extra media a captain has to do, you think about the extra meetings the captains have to do with the vice-captains, with the PGA of America, preparing your speech for the opening ceremony… there's a lot of things that people don't see that the captain does, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big. 'If you'd have said it 20 years ago, I'd say, yeah, it was probably possible,' he continued. 'But now with how big of a spectacle it is and everything that's on the line, I think it would be a very difficult position to be in.' The 2014 Open champion also stressed the practical limitations such a role would impose on his playing schedule across the weekend. 'Then [on the playing side] the captain isn't going to be on the course all day, so really the captain's only going to be able to play one session on Friday and one session on Saturday,' he said.

Peter Andre has hit back at his ex-wife Katie Price due to her 'baseless lies' over the last 16 years. The singer, 52, spoke out just hours after Katie, 47, urged him to take part in peace talks as their daughter Princess has been 'unfairly' dragged into their feud. Rumours of a 'rift' between Katie and Princess have been growing in recent weeks after Katie didn't attend Princess' 18th birthday party, or appear on the nepo baby 's fly-on-the-wall ITV television series. Katie, who shares Princess, 18, and son Junior, 20, with ex-husband Peter, later claimed that it was her daughter's management who had told her not to appear on the show. In a lengthy Instagram statement, Peter has now shared his side of the story, explaining: 'For sixteen years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. That ends today. 'The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangeemnts compel me to se the record straight. For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. 'In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before, out of respect for my children.' He continued: 'In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases found my ex-wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise to me and my management. The same falsehoods are being repeated today. 'Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months.' Daily Mail has contacted Katie's representatives for comment. It comes after Katie called on Peter to sit down with her and 'squash their beef' for the sake of their family. Speaking on the latest on the latest episode of her Katie Price Show podcast, Katie - who is currently recovering from more facial surgery - shared: 'There's no reason why both parents just can't be there to support her.' She continued: 'Now this isn't about me. I have to clarify this. I don't care that I'm not in Princess's show. 'I don't need to raise my profile by being on Princess's show, I do enough stuff. 'All what I want to do, is just whatever my daughter does, and it's the same with Junior, I don't care if I'm in the background, but I want to watch her do her photo shoots, I wanna watch her do her signings, because that's what I did. 'And my mom and you and Nan used to come along and support, and I'm proud of her. And I just wanna be there with her because I now I feel that I've missed out on so much.' Netflix add sex scenes to racy TV remake of classic novel in huge change to story
NETFLIX'S adaptation of Pride And Prejudice is already shaping up to be unconventional – and now I can reveal it's getting an extra injection of steam. The streamer's version of the Jane Austen novel — which has non-binary actress Emma Corrin leading the cast — has controversially left out the iconic wet-shirt moment made famous by Colin Firth in the 1995 BBC version but it has made up for it with something much raunchier. 11 They will give us the sauciest scene ever featured in one of the book's many adaptations, and it stars hot young actors Rhea Norwood and Louis Partridge getting seriously amorous. A TV insider said: 'As regency dramas go, it's about as racy as things tend to get, and certainly much more heated than anything we've seen in any other Pride And Prejudice. 'Netflix is proud this is an authentic retelling of the story, so there's still a lot that's suggested rather than seen. But at the same time, they're retelling it for a new generation. Sexy sensibility 'Pride And Prejudice seems to get remade every ten or 20 years, but it always draws on the original story with a few extras in there.' As well as the 1995 TV version starring Firth, there was the 2005 movie starring Matthew Macfayden and Keira Knightley, which put its own spin on the story. In the Netflix one, Rhea plays Lydia Bennet, bringing a sexy sensibility that will not surprise anyone who saw her playing siren Sally Bowles in the West End show, Cabaret. She's the love interest of George Wickham, played by Louis, who's also tackled some racy roles in his time, including as punk legend Sid Vicious in the FX mini-series Pistol. He also happens to be dating singer Olivia Rodrigo. . . so she may need to avert her eyes when this scene appears on screen. THAT'S THE SPIRIT, GWENDOLINE GWENDOLINE CHRISTIE returns to Wednesday to haunt Jenna Ortega in the next thrilling part of the Netflix series. She's back from beyond the grave as Principal Weems, declaring she is Wednesday's new spirit guide. 11 11 11 And it looks like Wednesday will need all the help she can get. Soon he will be appearing in the new ten-part Robin Hood series as the Sheriff of Nottingham – a character who traditionally meets a grisly end at the hands of the heroic outlaw. Debuting later this year on MGM+ the show sees Sean play the villain opposite Australian actor Jack Patten as Robin Hood. Sean's roles usually follow this path. In his last BBC One drama, This City Is Ours, he played a gangster who was murdered early in the series. Before that, he's taken on characters who've been hanged, shot with arrows, beheaded and even pushed off a cliff by marauding cows. I think Sean should embrace his reputation and next go for the holy trinity of Rasputin, JFK and Julius Caesar as his next roles. NEW TV BRINGS THE LOLS GET ready to giggle as Channel 4 has unleashed a raft of comedy commissions. Break Clause stars Samuel Bottomley and Lara Ricote as a couple forced to navigate their break-up while stuck living in the same flat. Bridgerton star Charithra Chandran leads the cast of Schooled, a 'comedic love letter to teachers and school support staff'. And comic Josh Pugh has written and stars in Stepping Up, about a man trying to prove his worth as a stepdad. Pigeon is another flatshare comedy from Katy Wix and Adam Drake, about city girl Kathryn when she is forced to move back home to Wales. Katy said: 'I've wanted to make this show for so long. I can't wait to bring the characters to the screen.' All four are filming now. ALL THE WEST, JOSIE THIS Morning's Josie Gibson is following in the footsteps of her best pal, Alison Hammond – with her very own travel series. I can reveal she's starring in a show for ITV called Josie's Taste Of The West Country. In this new show, Gloucestershire gal Josie will head back to her old 'hood. The channel also recently announced that she was fronting a new series called Josie Gibson's Big Country Build and they see her as one of their rising stars. The new series is made by Rock Oyster Media, which is the same production company who gave us Alison's Florida Unpacked BBC Two series as well as Gary Barlow 's Wine Tours in South Africa and Australia for ITV. As lovely-sounding as it is, by comparison, Josie might feel she's got the shorter end of the stick going to the West Country. PARAMOUNT+ has confirmed that the crime thriller Mayor Of Kingstown will return for a fourth series on October 26. In the new season, central character Mike, played by Jeremy Renner sees his control over Kingstown threatened, which forces him to tackle a mob war.
