Gangster's aide held for firing at student after robbery bid

Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch on Wednesday claimed to have detected the case of firing on a 20-year-old student on August 1 when he was manning his father's grocery store in Pimpri market, following the arrest of Ravindra Ghare (40) — an associate of a Mumbai gangster. Ghare, a shooter of the gangster with at least 25 criminal cases against him, had decided to commit a robbery because he was in financial trouble. He had opened fire at the student, Bhavesh Kukarani, because he resisted the suspect's bid to snatch his gold chain. The student survived the incident. Joint commissioner of police, Pimpri Chinchwad, Shashikant Mahavarkar said, "A crime branch team led by senior police inspector Vijay Dhamal recovered Kukarani's gold chain, a country-made pistol, 11 cartridges and two stolen motorcycles from Ghare's possession." When Kulkarni came out of the counter to get the drink from the fridge, the man tried to snatch his gold chain. "Kulkarni resisted him. The man took out a firearm and threatened the student. When Kulkarni started pushing the man out of the store, the latter fired a bullet towards Kulkarni and drove away on a motorcycle, Mahavarkar said. The Pimpri Chinchwad commissioner of police (CP), Vinoy Kumar Choubey, had fanned 10 teams to arrest the suspect. Inspector Dhamal said, "Our team started checking footage of CCTV cameras on the route the accused used to escape after the incident." He said the scrutiny of the CCTV cameras' footage revealed that Ghare changed motorcycles thrice while driving away from the spot. "Our team, comprising assistant police inspectors Dattatreya Guling, Pandurang Devkate, and constables Somnath More and Mohsin Attar traced the suspect's trail to Chikhali," Dhamal said. Dhamal said the area where the suspect lived was overcrowded. "We identified Ghare with the help of his body structure. We took him into custody on August 6. During the custodial interrogation, he admitted to his involvement in the firing in Pimpri," Dhamal said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Hiranwar Gang's Arms Supplier Nabbed in MCOCA Murder Case

Nagpur: In a significant breakthrough, the Nagpur crime branch apprehended Himanshu alias Jordan Vaidya, a member of the Hiranwar gang, from Wathoda on Tuesday. Vaidya, a key accused in the murder of café owner Avinash Bhusari, was wanted under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). On April 14, Bhusari was fatally shot in Gokulpeth, allegedly by Hiranwar gang members who mistook him for a member of the rival Sheikhu gang. Investigations revealed that Vaidya, 30, an alleged arms supplier, had procured three firearms and cartridges from Madhya Pradesh, which were used in the crime. Acting on confidential intelligence, a team led by senior inspector Mahesh Sagade and DCP Rahul Maknikar picked up Vaidya from his residence. After the medical examination, he was presented before the ACP (Sitabuldi division) for further action. The arrest is being seen as a crucial step in dismantling the Hiranwar gang's organised crime network, which has been linked to multiple violent incidents in Nagpur, including Bhusari's murder.
