Las Cruces schools honor top teacher, principal, staff
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Las Cruces Public Schools and its foundation honored the district's top teacher, principal and support personnel during a recent awards dinner.
The annual Celebration of Excellence dinner was held Friday night, April 25, at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum.
Nancy Orta, a kindergarten teacher at East Picacho Elementary School, was named the Teacher of the Year. Elizabeth Saenz, who works as a bilingual educational assistant at Centennial High School, was named the Educational Support Personnel of the Year, and Diane Barela at Mesilla Park Community Elementary School was named the Principal of the Year.
Leading up to the announcement, three finalists in each category were named, picked from a larger group of semifinalists chosen from campus-level winners.
The finalists for Teacher of the Year, in addition to Orta, were Kimberly Kaime from Picacho Middle School and Shawn Silva from Organ Mountain High School. Finalists for Educational Support Personnel of the Year, in addition to Saenz, were Sylvia Laborin from Zia Middle School and Alvaro Rivera-Parra from the LCPS Physical Plant Department.
Principal finalists, along with Barela, were Cherie Love from Doña Ana Elementary School and Yong Vega from Sierra Middle School.
Finalists were each awarded a $500 cash prize, and the winners in each category were given a $1,000 cash prize.
First Light Federal Credit Union sponsored prizes for the finalist and winner in the Teacher of the Year category, Campos School Portraits sponsored prizes in the Educational Support Personnel of the Year category and Century Bank sponsored prizes for the Principal of the Year finalists and winner.
The top educators in the district spend the coming school year representing LCPS at various events, including the State of the District Address.
The Teacher of the Year advances to a state-level consideration for the New Mexico Teacher of the Year.
Administered by the New Mexico Public Education Department, the New Mexico Teacher of the Year program recognizes outstanding educators who demonstrate exceptional teaching practices and leadership, LCPS said.
Other factors include teaching experience, classroom effectiveness and contributions to the teaching profession, LCPS said.

She is currently interim principal at Bolton Academy. Holly Brookins, Burgess-Peterson Elementary School: Brookins has more than a decade of school leadership experience. As a principal in a neighboring district, she has led her school to achieve state recognitions. Keenya Jackson, Cleveland Avenue Elementary School: Jackson's wealth of experience includes roles as a teacher, instructional coach and curriculum support teacher. She is currently an assistant principal in a neighboring school district. Chendra Dupree, Herman J. Russell West End Academy: Dupree's experience includes school and district roles, including instructional and literacy coach, as well as intervention coach. She is currently a high school principal. Langston Longley, John Lewis Invictus Academy: Longley has served Atlanta Public Schools since 2004 in a variety of roles. He's been a principal for the past 10 years. He was named Principal of the Year by Communities in Schools in 2023. Chante' Blackwell, Perkerson Elementary School: Blackwell brings a wealth of experience at the school and district levels, including as a leader support specialist and assistant principal. She is currently supporting the assessment office in a neighboring district. Lami Ojezua, Scott Elementary School: Ojezua joined APS in 2007 and served in numerous roles, including continuous improvement coordinator, assistant principal, and most recently, interim principal. Stacey Welsh Perot, Smith Elementary School: Perot has three decades of education experience, including teaching, instructional leadership and school administration. She's a former 'Teacher of the Year' and currently a principal at Garden Hills Elementary. Phillip Braziel, South Atlanta High School: Braziel has been a classroom teacher, master scheduler, and assistant principal. He has been previously nominated for Assistant Principal of the Year and previously honored as a Teacher of the Year. Octavius Harris, Therrell High School: Harris has severed in multiple roles within APS, including teacher, assistant principal and principal. He's currently a principal in a neighboring district. Dante Edwards, interim principal, Garden Hills Elementary School: Edwards has served APS since 2002 in a variety of roles as a teacher and an administrator, including assistant principal, magnet coordinator and principal. Kimberly Latchman, interim principal, Maynard H. Jackson High School: Latchman has more than 20 years of experience in education. At Maynard Jackson High School, she has served as an instructional coach and, most recently, as assistant principal. The board previously announced seven other new principals last month: Brian Baron, Morningside Elementary School; Summer Clayton, E. Rivers Elementary School; Tiauna Crooms, Booker T. South Fork Memorial honors community, first responders
RUIDOSO, N.M. (KRQE) – The one-year anniversary of the South Fork Fire is coming up this month, and a memorial ceremony is scheduled to commemorate the event. On Tuesday, June 17, the community is invited to honor those who were impacted by the fires and floods and to recognize the first responders to answered the call. Doña Ana County Fire Rescue extinguish residential fire in Organ
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Doña Ana County Fire Rescue (DAFR), with the help of the Las Cruces Fire Department, extinguished a residential structure fire Sunday morning, June 8, in Organ, New Mexico. According to DAFR, the call came in at 9:30 a.m. on June 8, along the 6800 block of Aurora Place in Organ, roughly 13 miles west of Las Cruces. When fire crews arrived, an RV was 'fully engulfed in flames that spread to a nearby mobile unit being used as a fixed residence,' Doña Ana County Fire said. With the assistance of Las Cruces Fire, crews were able to extinguish the fire, DAFR said. Doña Ana County Fire Rescue said no injuries were reported. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
