
CJ chief doubles down on Japan amid K-culture tailwind
CJ Group Chair Lee Jae-hyun made his first overseas workplace visit of the year to Japan earlier this month, stepping up the conglomerate's global push in a neighboring market deeply steeped in Korean cultural influence.
According to the company on Wednesday, Lee visited Tokyo from April 2-4, accompanied by senior executives from the group's affiliates, during which he inspected CJ operations and underscored the importance of seizing opportunities.
His bid comes at a moment when CJ is widening its reach with a growing mix of operations across food, entertainment and beauty.
'The Korean Wave in Japan is not merely a fleeting trend, but a crucial opportunity for K-culture to take deeper root in global markets,' Lee said, adding that ventures like the company's food and entertainment businesses must capitalize on the momentum.
CJ CheilJedang is actively expanding its food portfolio in Japan, while CJ ENM operates Lapone Entertainment — a joint venture established in 2019 with Japanese entertainment company Yoshimoto Kogyo. Last year, CJ Olive Young set up a local subsidiary in Japan, which it has identified as one of its key strategic markets.
To position CJ as a leading global player, Lee further called for accelerated localization alongside the development of global infrastructure, while urging the pursuit of new business opportunities, including expanding the market presence of CJ Olive Young.
His visit also included high-stakes business talks with Japanese company chairmen, including those from TBS Holdings, Itochu Corporation and Mizuho Financial Group, during which they explored business cooperation and shared insights on potential new business initiatives.
Veering beyond corporate matters, Lee engaged in discussions with academics and cultural experts about the rising popularity of K-culture and the search for new growth drivers in Japan's economic landscape.
'The chairman's visit was aimed at understanding local trends on-site and check on the progress of global expansion, at a time when Korean culture continues to spread among younger generations in Japan,' a company official said. 'He will continue sharing the group's vision with employees and strengthening communication as CJ accelerates its global push."

The rising price of everyday goods tests public trust in Lee's ability to manage the economy Just days into his presidency, Lee Jae-myung has found himself facing an unlikely but potent symbol of economic distress: the cost of ramyeon. 'Is it true,' he asked during an emergency economic meeting on Monday, 'that one packet now costs 2,000 won ($1.50)?' The figure was exaggerated, but the sentiment behind the question struck a nerve. For many South Koreans, the supermarket has become the front line in a broader struggle over living costs and public trust in government. Consumer prices have begun to cool. Inflation fell to 1.9 percent in May, marking the first dip below 2 percent in five months. Yet the statistical relief has not translated into real relief at home. At dinner tables and market stalls, the strain remains unmistakable. Processed food prices have climbed 4.1 percent over the past year, while everyday staples such as coffee, chocolate and vinegar have risen more than 5 percent in just six months. Livestock products — beef, pork and chicken — are up more than 6 percent. For many families, the shift is no longer from one brand to another, but from one food group to another. Fresh meat is increasingly being replaced by canned fish. Multiple forces are driving the squeeze: a weakened won, volatile global commodity markets and ongoing geopolitical disruptions. But the sharpest price hikes aligned with a period of political turmoil, including former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed attempt to impose martial law, his impeachment and the early election held on June 3. During that window of uncertainty, more than 60 companies raised prices. Whether or not that amounts to collusion, it stands as a clear case of opportunistic inflation. President Lee's concern is widely shared. A recent survey by the Federation of Korean Industries found that 6 in 10 Koreans identified price stability as their top economic concern. In response, the ruling Democratic Party of Korea has pledged to create a price stabilization task force, backing the president's call for swift action. But identifying the problem is only the first step. Solving it requires precision. Heavy-handed interventions often backfire. When governments suppress prices too aggressively, they risk triggering secondary shocks. Companies unable to absorb legitimate cost increases may cut quality, pull products or — once controls are lifted — raise prices even higher. The result is not stability, but deeper volatility. A more sustainable path lies in focused, disciplined policymaking. Authorities should monitor for collusion and penalize unjustified markups. Expanding supply in vulnerable sectors, diversifying import sources and improving domestic logistics would address root causes more effectively than across-the-board discounts. There is also the matter of perception. Inflation in household essentials affects not just spending power, but confidence. When consumers feel poorer, they spend less, dragging down demand and stalling recovery. Targeted fiscal measures, such as subsidies, tax relief and temporary import easing, can help households without distorting the broader economy. But these tools require technical skill, political will and restraint. The Lee administration appears to understand the stakes. Its urgency is appropriate. However, success will be judged not by numbers alone, but by whether Korean families regain the ability to plan, save and live without constant anxiety over the next grocery bill. In this context, the price of ramyeon is more than a passing concern. It has become a bellwether — not only of economic conditions, but of trust in government. The dinner table is where policy meets daily life. And if President Lee hopes to deliver on his promise of economic recovery, he must begin by ensuring that Korean families can afford to gather around one.

Foreign inflow fuels Kospi rally
Foreign investors have poured nearly 4 trillion won ($3 billion) into the nation's benchmark Kospi so far this month, helping to drive a strong bullish run in the local stock market. Offshore investors net purchased shares worth 3.78 trillion won on the Kospi through Tuesday in June, continuing the 1.16 trillion won buying spree that began in May, according to data from the Korea Exchange, the nation's bourse operator. While they net bought shares worth 125 billion won on June 2, the amount surged on June 4, a day after the country's presidential election, to 1.05 trillion won, followed by a 980 billion won net purchase on June 5. On Monday and Tuesday, foreigners net bought shares amounting to 977 billion won and 634 billion won on the Kospi, respectively. The rally pushed the index to close daytime trading at 2871.85 on Tuesday, up 16.08 points or 0.56 percent, from the previous session. During intraday trading, the Kospi surged to as high as 2,885.67, nearing the 52-week high set at 2,896.43 on July 11 last year. The buying momentum has been partly fueled by growing expectations of political stability and reform following President Lee Jae-myung's election victory last week. 'With the inauguration of the Lee Jae-myung administration, expectations for revisions to the Commercial Act and efforts to address the 'Korea Discount' have stimulated foreign investor inflows,' said Lee Kyoung-min, an analyst at Daishin Securities. 'Protection of minority shareholder rights and improvements in corporate governance — longstanding demands from global investors — remain key themes. Foreign investment flows into the Korean stock market have clearly improved against this backdrop of policy-driven optimism and attractive valuations.' Backed by the rally, the Kospi has emerged as the best-performing major stock market worldwide over the past week, outpacing key global indices such as Hong Kong's Hang Seng, Denmark's OMX Copenhagen 25 and Japan's Nikkei 225, according to a list compiled by financial platform While not exhaustive, the list features selected stock indices of significant size and market value. Year-to-date, the Kospi has risen 19.36 percent, ranking as the eighth-best performer globally. It trails Poland's WIG 20 index, the top performer so far this year, which has surged 24.67 percent, placing the Kospi roughly five percentage points behind. Among the indices that function as comprehensive market indices that reflect the overall performance of their respective national stock markets, the Kospi ranked behind only those of Russia, Germany, Austria and Hong Kong. The others, such as the WIG 20, were composed of a limited number of selected large-cap companies.

Cabinet approves W26b for presidential office relocation
The Cabinet on Tuesday earmarked 25.9 billion won (US$19 million) in state funds to relocate the presidential office to the former compound of Cheong Wa Dae, the presidential office said. President Lee Jae-myung approved the relocation plan in a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day, and the amount is roughly 69 percent of the budget spent to move the presidential office to Yongsan in central Seoul under the former administration, according to presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung. The presidential compound was relocated to the headquarters of the defense ministry in Yongsan a few months after former President Yoon Suk Yeol assumed office in May 2022. The old presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae, located on a secluded hilltop compound in central Seoul, has since been opened to the public for sightseeing visits. "To ensure a smooth return to Cheong Wa Dae and a better sightseeing environment for visitors, the operation schedule for Cheong Wa Dae tours will be adjusted," Kang said. "The return to Cheong Wa Dae will be conducted in phases on weekends and holidays." In a separate notice, the Cheong Wa Dae Foundation, which operates walking tours at the former presidential compound, said the current tour schedules will run through July 14, with changes set to take place starting from reservations for the July 16-31 period. All tours will temporarily halt from Aug. 1 for maintenance and security procedures until they resume after the relocation is completed. (Yonhap)
