19-year-old Australia opener Sam Konstas will be representing Australia A on their red-ball tour of India next month.
Cricket Australia have sent struggling Sam Konstas to India for Australia A's red-ball tour of the country next month. Konstas first came into the limelight following a half-century on debut while facing the likes of Jasprit Bumrah during the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December. He further hit the headlines thanks to his heated altercation with Virat Kohli and later Bumrah.
However, following the BGT, Konstas has been struggling to get going in Test cricket.
Australia chief selector George Bailey feels that the experience of playing in India will be invaluable for the teenages.
The 19-year-old, who had a tough time during Australia's recent senior tour of the West Indies, is the only current Test player chosen for two four-day matches in Lucknow.
Test-capped players Cooper Connolly, Todd Murphy, and Nathan McSweeney were also included in the 14-man squad. A separate Australia A squad was announced for three one-day matches.
'The subcontinent presents many unique challenges and offers the chance to utilise different skills with both bat and ball," said Bailey.
Konstas made headlines during the Melbourne Boxing Day Test last year when he faced Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, scoring a fiery debut 60 with a series of unorthodox shots.
He lasted for one more Test before being dropped, only to regain his place for the West Indies Test series in June-July. However, he struggled to score more than 25 in six innings, making his hold on the position increasingly uncertain ahead of Australia's home Ashes series against England this year.

Ritika clinches heavyweight gold

Bangkok: Ritika bagged gold in the women's 80+kg category as India finished a creditable overall fourth in the Under-22 category of the Asian Boxing Championships here on Monday. The Indian U-22 contingent concluded their campaign with a total of 13 medals, while the U19 group returned home with a total of 14 medals, including three gold, seven silver and four bronze. The effort helped the U-19 side to end up at overall second in the tournament. However, the day's sole gold came through Ritika in the women's 80+kg final, where she kept her composure under pressure to beat Kazakhstan's Assel Toktassyn. Facing a strong boxer, Ritika mixed caution with aggression to land some telling blows, bagging India's fourth gold in the event. In the morning session, Yatri Patel settled for a silver after losing to Khumorabonu Mamajonova of Uzbekistan in women's 57kg, while Priya's spirited fight against Yu Tian of China in the 60kg final ended in a narrow 2:3 loss. Later in the day, Neeraj went down against Shavkatjon Boltaev of Uzbekistan in the men's 75kg final. Later, Ishan Kataria lost to Khalimjon Mamasoliev of Uzbekistan in the 90+kg gold medal clash, as both the Indian boxers secured silver. India's overall medal haul across both age groups and genders underlined the strength and depth of its youth boxing programme. Earlier this year, the U-15 and U-17 squads had combined for 43 medals at the Asian Championships, with the U-15 contingent delivering the highest number of golds in the competition - 11 in total - led by the girls' team, who swept 10 of the 15 available gold medals and won every final they contested on the penultimate day.

Former selector explains why Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should not continue their ODI careers

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Indian cricket greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's ODI future has been the subject of intense discussion, with the October series against Australia being seen as their farewell match. Despite their good form, both players are reportedly not part of plans for the ODI World Cup 2027. Former BCCI selector says Rohit and Kohli should move on Former BCCI selection committee member Devang Gandhi believes it is time to move on from the experienced pair to create opportunities for young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in the ODI format. 'How will you make players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Sai Sudharsan, among others, sit out when they have shown how well they can adapt? The bigger transition is from T20s to Tests. Once a player has done well in Test cricket and has the power game, ODIs should come easier to them. It is very important that the selectors and the team management sit together and take a call,' Gandhi told the Times of India. Rohit and Kohli will need to play Domestic cricket According to reports, if Rohit and Kohli want to continue playing 50-over cricket, they will need to play domestic cricket. However, the BCCI has not yet made their decision official. However, Gandhi believes that even this may not be possible, as young players must be prepared for the ODI World Cup in case Virat and Rohit don't perform as expected before the main event. 'If, say, in a year's time, we come to a situation where one of them is not firing and we need a replacement, the team management may not have enough time to prepare a player for the job,' Gandhi said. 'There's absolutely no doubt about the contribution of Rohit and Virat. But time doesn't wait for anybody,' Gandhi added.

MS Dhoni's Rs 100 Crore Defamation Case: HC Orders Trial, Cricketer To Record Statement

Last Updated: MS Dhoni is reportedly available to provide evidence between October 20 and December 10 as per a petition. MS Dhoni is set to record his statement after Madras High Court ordered a trial in a Rs 100 crore defamation case filed by the former India captain against two prominent media channels and a journalist for dragging his name in the 2013 IPL betting scandal. Justice CV Karthikeyan has appointed an advocate commissioner who will record the evidence on behalf of Dhoni. The two-time world cup winning captain will not appear in person for the examination as his presence could lead to chaos on account of him being a celebrity. The case was filed by Dhoni back in 2014 seeking damages of Rs 100 crore from the defendants. The 44-year-old alleges that during a Television debate on the IPL betting scandal, defamatory remarks were made against him. As per a report in The Hindu, senior counsel PR Raman submitted an affidavit from Dhoni seeking the start of the trial which has now been pending for a decade now thanks to the involved parties seeking relief over the years. 'The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay (in disposal of the suit pending in the High Court for over a decade) and to support the fair, just, and speedy adjudication of the suit. I state that I shall extend my full co-operation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this honourable court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence," the affidavit read. The IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal of 2013 is considered to be a major blot in the T20 league's history. As many as three cricketers were found guilty of having indulged in spot fixing while two franchises – Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals – were suspended for two years due to the betting activities of their top officials. Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020 but continues to represent CSK in IPL. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
