Ben Askren's wife responds to rumour ex-UFC star has died
Ben Askren was rushed to hospital last weekend after suffering from pneumonia - and rumours began to spread that the former fighter had passed away
Ben Askren's wife has reassured fans the former UFC fighter is still battling despite rumours he had passed away.
Askren was rushed to hospital last weekend following a sudden illness that left him unresponsive, causing serious concern for the ex-two-promotion champion. While there were rumours of his death circulating on social media earlier this week, Askren's wife Amy has cleared up the claims.
'He is alive and any rumour he has died is completely false," she told TMZ. "[He is] definitely still fighting." Mrs. Askren's statement comes after former UFC champion Daniel Cormier incorrectly said his fellow fighter had been released from hospital and was recuperating at home.
"Our good friend is having a hard time," Cormier said. "The last time we did an episode [of their show], Ben was complaining about some issues, he had some infections, he had a really tough time. I want to report to you guys that he's now back home. He's with his family, his beautiful wife Amy and everyone is praying that Ben gets better and we can start moving forward together with life for ben. It's so sad and I don't know how things like this happen in life to people like Ben."
Cormier later took to social media to clarify what he meant, adding: ""He's back in Wisconsin in a hospital. He isn't home. Please keep praying for Ben. I should have been more clear."
David Potter, another veteran of the combat sports world, also clarified the spurious rumours surrounding Askren on social media. He emphasised: "No. Our friend Ben Askren has not passed away. But the situation is still dire. Praying for him. A hero in the wrestling community, a MMA champion, and a one time boxer, which proved he would do anything, put himself in any situation to take care of his family and kids. Do the right thing and take care of them as well, protect his kids, do not share unconfirmed information."
Askren, revered in the realms of mixed martial arts, honed his craft with organisations such as Bellator and ONE FC before ascending to the esteemed ranks of the UFC in 2019. His inaugural fight saw him secure a win against Robbie Lawler, although he later suffered a devastating loss to Jorge Masvidal––defeated by a lightning-quick flying knee just five seconds into their bout.
Following an unsuccessful return against grappling maestro Demian Maia where he was caught in a chokehold, Askren hung up his MMA gloves. Yet, the lure of the ring beckoned in 2021 when he ventured into boxing to go toe-to-toe with internet sensation and glovesman Jake Paul, only to be defeated in the first round.
While Askren was hospitalised, his wife of 15 years used social media to request that fans keep the fighter in their thoughts and prayers. "Feeling so incredibly thankful for our friends and community. It's times like this that remind you how truly blessed you are," she wrote.
"I feel God moving through the love and support we have received. I apologise if I haven't had a chance to reply to you, but know I've seen your messages, and each one has meant so much to me. Please keep praying for Ben."

Tyson Fury has earned millions but net worth is still lower than Anthony Joshua
The 'Gypsy King' - who announced his retirement from boxing in January - pocketed several life-changing paydays during his glittering career Despite a solid year financially for Tyson Fury in 2024, his net worth is still much lower than long-time rival Anthony Joshua. After making his professional debut in 2008, it was not long before Fury earned several high-profile fights on the national scene. The 'Gypsy King' picked up the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles with a win over Derek Chisora in 2011, but it was not until the sequel that he truly announced himself on the world stage. The second win over Chisora, three years after their first encounter, seemingly earned Fury a shot at the big boys. He would go on to become a world champion in 2015 after defeating Wladimir Klitschko. From them on in, he became accustomed to big paydays and blockbuster fights. Fury enjoyed a glittering career inside the ring and officially announced his retirement from the sport of boxing in January following back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk. With the Brit now seemingly enjoying life away from the sport after earning millions, here is how his net worth compares to Joshua's... Tyson Fury net worth Earlier this year, Fury had a reported net worth of £130million ($160m), according to After a three year hiatus from the ring, the 'Gypsy King' returned in 2018 and defeated Sefer Seferi on his return before picking up a dominant victory over Francesco Pianeta. Following the two wins, it seemed as if the Brit was ready fort he big fights again. It was eventually confirmed that he would take on rival Deontay Wilder in December 2018. For the fight - which went down as a draw - Fury reportedly picked up £7.82m ($10m). In the rematch, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Fury and Wilder had base purses of £3.7m ($5m), though both had more than £18.5m ($25m) in guaranteed earnings, while Fury earned a guaranteed base purse of £4.5m ($6m) for the trilogy. The Brit's base purse for his homecoming fight with Dillian Whyte was £23m ($29.5m). Fury ended up winning the fight and claimed the bonus - with his purse for the fight ending up at £26.2m ($33.6m). Despite announcing his retirement, Fury came back a few months later and took on Chisora for a third time - pocketing £21m ($25m). Fury returned nearly a year later to take on ex-UFC heavyweight Francis Ngannou. Despite being dropped, the 'Gypsy King' edged the win on points and earned £35m ($42m) for the win. In terms of his following two fights with Usyk, it was revealed that Fury secured a 70 per cent split for his first bout with Usyk last May before agreeing to an equal share in the rematch. His total earnings from the two-fight series with Usyk amounted to a staggering £155m ($189m). However, Fury would have lost a significant chunk of this fortune in taxes upon leaving Saudi Arabia. Earlier this year, Fury was crowned the highest-paid boxer in 2024, ahead of rivals Usyk and Joshua, according to Sportico. In total, the 'Gypsy King' pocketed a total sum of $147million - with $140m (£112m) coming from salary/winnings, whilst the final $7m (£5m) came from endorsements. After becoming a world champion in 2016, the British boxing legend has picked up some lucrative paydays. In his rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr back in 2019, it was reported that 'AJ' pocketed £45m ($60m) following the unanimous decision victory in Saudi Arabia. A year later, he brutally toppled Kubrat Pulev in London. However, he was back on the big stage after penning a two-fight deal with Usyk. From the first encounter against the Ukrainian, Joshua walked away with £15m ($20m) while his opponent gained £5m ($6.7m). And in the rematch, despite Joshua losing the first clash, the purse of £65m ($87.7m) was split 50/50. The 35-year-old then banked around a further £10m-a-piece for his successive victories over Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius. Following a destructive win over Otto Wallin, It was reported that he earned around £30m for his second-round KO of Francis Ngannou last year. Joshua reportedly banked a guaranteed £6m following his defeat to Dubois - but roughly took home around £25m in total following pay-per-view sales. In the aforementioned list Sportico, in terms of endorsements, British star Joshua earned the joint-most in that field, but he doesn't feature in the top 20. Instead, 'AJ' sits in 30th place - pocketing a grand total of $60m (£48m) last year, with $50m (£40m) coming through salary/winnings. However, despite the recent growth in his net worth, Joshua is not the number one athlete on the Sunday Times' list. That accolade belongs to golf star Rory McIlroy. The 36-year-old is worth a jaw-dropping £260m ($350.9m) compared to his value of £225m (£303.6m) a year ago.
