Railway officials worried over rising number of cases of trains running over cattle affecting passenger safety in Tiruchi Division
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested the cattle owner and booked a case against him for endangering passenger safety. The latest incident joins a long list of such instances reported within the jurisdiction of the Tiruchi Railway Division this year.
According to RPF authorities, 219 cases of cattle being run over by trains were reported in Tiruchi Division, which is spread over 10 revenue districts, since January this year. Of these, 65 cases were reported in the four sections of Tiruverumbur-Ponmalai, Adirampattinam-Tillaivilagam, Budalur-Thanjavur and Nagapattinam-Karaikal, which are classified as 'vulnerable' stretches. Twenty-two incidents were reported on the Tiruverumbur-Ponmalai BG section alone.
Despite periodic awareness campaigns, such instances remain a cause for concern for the railway authorities as these endanger passenger safety besides disrupting train services, said a senior RPF officer. The number of such incidents reported in 2024 was 345, the authorities said.
RPF holds awareness programmes every time such an incident is reported in a particular stretch. Respective local panchayats are involved in these programmes to drive home the message to the people to stay alert and ensure that cattle are kept away from the tracks, the authorities added.

Raipur: The Government Railway Police (GRP), Durg, successfully rescued an 18-month-old boy who was abducted from Durg railway station and traced him to Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu. The accused, identified as Arumugam (45), a resident of Thiruneelakudi, Thanjavur, was arrested. The GRP later handed over the child to his mother. The incident came to light on July 27, 2025, when Surya Manikpuri and his wife, Sonu Manikpuri, residents of Durg, woke up at Durg railway station to find their 18-month-old son missing. The family, which was travelling with two children, fell asleep near the ticket booking counter around 10 pm on July 26. Their three-year-old child was with them. After an extensive search, the distraught family reported the matter to police. Following Supreme Court guidelines in cases involving minors, the GRP registered a case under Sections 137(2) and 140(3) of BNS, said DSP (GRP) S N Akhtar. Raipur GRP SP Shweta Shrivastava Sinha formed a special team to review CCTV footage from Durg railway station. The accused was seen getting off at Nagpur railway station and taking an autorickshaw to Sitabardi market, where he bought new clothes for the child. He later returned to the station and boarded the 12591 Gorakhpur Express. Pantry car staff on the Gorakhpur Express noticed that the man was inebriated and the child was crying. They alerted the RPF at Chandrapur station, who deboarded the man. During questioning by Childline staff, the accused claimed he had a fight with his wife, and insisted that the child was his. He produced an Aadhaar card, sent to him via WhatsApp from his village. After verifying the document, the RPF staff let him go, the DSP said. Using the Aadhaar card details, the GRP traced the accused, Arumugam, to his residence under Thiruneelakudi police station limits in Thanjavur. With the help of the local RPF and city police, the team reached the specified address and found Arumugam with the child. The boy immediately ran to his mother upon seeing her. The police rescued the child and brought the accused back to Durg. The child underwent a medical examination at Durg District Hospital before being reunited with his mother. Arumugam was arrested on Aug 10, 2025, produced before a court in Durg, and remanded to judicial custody, the DSP said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
