Hungary's Retail Sales Rebound Counters Industry Output Decline
Hungary's retail sales surged at the start of the second quarter, making shoppers Prime Minister Viktor Orban's bet to avoid another recession less than a year before elections.
Store receipts rose an annual workday-adjusted 5% in April, the most since May 2022, according to data published by the Budapest-based statistics office on Friday. Industrial output meantime dropped for a 14th consecutive month, falling a workday-adjusted annual 2.3% in April after a 5.4% drop in March.
