RAIPUR: A Maoist commander carrying Rs 8 lakh cash bounty was killed in an encounter in Gariaband district in
Chhattisgarh
during an
anti-Maoist operation
in Friday. Security forces recovered the body of killed Maoist along with an automatic weapon.
Raipur range inspector general of police Amresh Mishra said in a statement that an encounter broke out on Friday in forests near Jugad area. A team of security forces ventured out on an operation, based on specific inputs about presence of Maoists in Bhaludiggi hills near Odisha-Chhattisgarh borders in Gariaband district.
A joint team of CRPF, E-30 – a district police unit was out in forest near Motipani village when the encounter took place in the evening around 6, when Maoists opened fire.
After a brief exchange of fire for about half an hour, security forces recovered a huge cache of explosives from the site along with the Maoist's body and an SLR.

The Maoist was identified as Yogesh, a divisional committee member, who carried Rs 8 lakh reward, said Gariaband SP Nikhil Rakhecha.
Earlier, 17 Maoists were gunned down in Gariaband district in the same forest range of Bhaludiggi, while 128 others have been killed so far this year in Bastar division.

IMPHAL: Tensions escalated across the valley districts of Manipur following the arrest of Asem Kanan, a member of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Guwahati, on Sunday. In a press release, CBI said: 'Kanan was arrested on Sunday at Imphal airport for his involvement in various criminal activities linked to the 2023 Manipur violence. His family has been informed of the arrest.' The statement also mentioned that CBI is investigating cases related to the Manipur violence as per the directive of the Supreme Court of India. 'Due to the prevailing law-and-order situation, the trial of these cases has been shifted from Manipur to Guwahati,' it said. CBI further confirmed that Kanan has been transported to Guwahati and will be produced before a competent court for police remand. According to police officials familiar with the matter, Kanan was arrested along with four other Arambai Tenggol members on Saturday from Imphal. However, the CBI's official statement confirmed only the arrest of Kanan. Meanwhile, violent protests erupted in Imphal city. Hundreds of demonstrators blocked major roads using burning tyres, wooden planks, and other debris. Security forces fired tear gas shells, mock bombs, and live rounds to disperse the crowds. Amid the chaos, a 13-year-old boy sustained serious injuries to his leg, reportedly from a tear gas shell explosion. He was evacuated to a nearby hospital. From Saturday evening to 5.30 pm Sunday, at least 11 people were reported injured in connection with the unrest, with the situation continuing to deteriorate in the evening. Security forces have been deployed at key locations across Imphal, including Palace Compound in Imphal East, and Keishampat Bridge, Moirangkhom, and Tiddim Road stretching up to Imphal airport in Imphal West. Arambai Tenggol on Saturday announced a 10-day statewide shutdown demanding the unconditional release of the arrested volunteers. Additionally, a women's group from Khurai in Imphal East issued a stern warning, demanding that 'all MLAs currently outside the state return to Imphal and form a new popular government by 6 pm on June 10.' The group declared that any MLA who fails to return by the deadline will not be allowed to re-enter the state. As of 5.30 pm Sunday, the situation remained highly volatile in the valley districts, with security on high alert and public anger mounting.

Villagers protest death of youth in Nalanda
Patna: An irate mob blocked the road near Ajanta Cinema at Ramchandrapur locality under Laheri police station area in Nalanda on Sunday, following the recovery of the body of a 22-year-old-youth. He was missing from his home since Saturday evening, and his body was recovered later in the night from Shivaji Nagar locality. The family alleged that he was killed by his friends. The youth was working in a paint company in Hyderabad and had recently returned home on May 20, police said. According to the police, the deceased was identified as Deepu Kumar alias Lala, son of Vijay Kumar Sharma, a native of Nischalganj village under Parwalpur police station area. Vijay has been selling sweets in Biharsharif for the past 30 years. Deepu's mother, Manju Devi, said he brought home a cellphone on Saturday evening, which his friends asked him to sell for Rs 5,000. "I refused to accept the phone and asked him to return it. He left but came back shortly. While I was scolding him about the phone, his friends called him outside," she said. The protesters alleged that his friends deliberately intoxicated him before killing him. Laheri station house officer (SHO) Ranjit Kumar Rajak said, "Police reached the spot immediately after receiving information about the road blockade. The situation was brought under control after assuring the family of a proper investigation into the matter." He further said that while initial probe suggests a possible drug overdose, the exact cause of death would be determined after the postmortem. "The family maintains that this could be a premeditated incident and demands swift arrest and strict punishment for the culprits. The police are investigating the case from all angles, and further action will be taken based on the family's formal complaint," the SHO added.
