Xi urges Communist Party to learn from pioneer of China's economic planning

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the ruling Communist Party to learn from the legacy of early party figure Chen Yun – a pioneer of China's economic planning – in remarks on Friday to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the late statesman's birth. Advertisement Xi called on the party to have unwavering confidence when facing 'chaotic and complex turbulence', and to strengthen its ability to cut a path for China's economy with 'objective and thorough' research, according to state news agency Xinhua. The party is preparing for an annual conclave, to be held later this year, focusing on the next five-year plan covering 2026–2030 . The national economic development plan will serve as a blueprint to sharpen China's competitive edge and address weak links exposed in its rivalry with the United States. Xi made the remarks at a meeting in Beijing to mark the anniversary of Chen's birth in 1905. China's ruling party typically commemorates the birthdays of revolutionary elders every 10 years. Modern leaders often weave their policy priorities into their commemoration speeches as a way to rally the party and draw inspiration from the elder statesman's political legacy. Advertisement

Taiwan war game triggers US questions over island's ‘will to fight' if PLA attacks

high-level civilian war game held in Taipei this week has exposed serious vulnerabilities in Taiwan's defences of its outer perimeter and eastern regions, prompting a retired US admiral to warn that Washington's involvement depended on 'Taiwan's will to fight'. Advertisement In the exercise simulating a 2030 cross-strait conflict, Taiwan lost control of key outlying territories – most notably Penghu, a group of islands 50km (30 miles) east of the main island – as the People's Liberation Army (PLA) launched a multifront assault that quickly outpaced Taiwan's initial response. The two-day simulation, organised by three Taiwanese think tanks led by the Taipei School of Economics and Political Science, is one of the most detailed publicly conducted strategic exercises modelling a full-scale assault by mainland Chinese forces. It reflects mounting concerns among local strategists and retired military leaders that Taiwan's eastern flank and offshore islands remain dangerously exposed amid intensifying PLA threats The result of the war game – whether the PLA seized Taiwan – or when the final outcome will be confirmed has not been made public, but the organisers said they would issue a full report. Advertisement Four teams represented Taiwan, the United States, Japan and mainland China, overseen by a control group. Notable participants included Michael Mullen, a former chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff; Dennis Blair, a former US Pacific commander; and Shigeru Iwasaki, former chief of staff of Japan's Self-Defence Forces. Nine retired Taiwanese generals and admirals, including Lee Hsi-min, former chief of the general staff; and eight lieutenant generals also took part.

Lee Jae-myung's debut at G7 summit shows ‘South Korea is back in the game'

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung 's attendance at the Group of Seven summit signals that the country is 'back in the game', according to analysts, as the move allows Seoul to press ahead with its long-term goal of becoming a member of an expanded G7. Sworn in as his country's new president last Wednesday, Lee would attend the three-day G7 summit to be held in Canada from Sunday, the presidential office said on Saturday. This would mark his first overseas trip since he took office and his debut on the global diplomatic stage, following his election earlier this month, brought on by the impeachment of former president Yoon Suk-yeol Yoon was impeached by the National Assembly after declaring martial law in December. The constitutional court upheld the verdict in a unanimous decision in April, removing him from office. South Korea is not a G7 member state but had been invited to the expanded G7 sessions in 2021 and 2023, when Britain and Japan were the respective hosts.
