Multiple marathon man on his marks to remember Michelle
They say the best things come in threes and so far as Midlothian man Garry Jones is concerned that will include marathons completed back-to-back this weekend.
On Friday, 23 May, at 5pm Garry, 50, will set out of his massive endurance effort covering 78.6 consecutive miles.
And it is all being done in memory of his late sister-in-law, Michelle Connor, to mark the third anniversary of her passing on account of breast cancer and to raise funds for a memorial bench she always wanted to see place outside Bonnyrigg Health Centre.
And with Garry earning his living as a driver on the rail network it could be said that training has long been part of his life! Sorry….
'I've ran a few Edinburgh marathons but after a few wines back in January I decided I would try to surpass those efforts on the weekend of the official Edinburgh marathon.
'I'll start off at 5pm in Bonnyrigg – Michelle worked as a home help in the town and was always in and out of the Health Centre for various reasons – and expect to complete my task around 1pm the following day at the home ground of Whitehall Welfare football club.'
Among those due to accompany Garry for part of the run is Michelle's brother, Paul Sheerin.
Paul has just moved to Hearts as an assistant manager to Derek McInnes whom he worked alongside at Kilmarnock. Also, he is known for having scored for Inverness Caledonian Thistle in their celebrated Scottish Cup victory over Celtic which spawned the 'Super-Cally-Go-Ballistic-Celtic-are-attrocious' newspaper headline.
With two days remaining Garry has been pledged over £7,200 having set the target of raising £2,500 for the charity, Miles for Michelle.
Also set to benefit are the Make Seconds Count charity synonomous with Karen Henderson, a Midlothian patient champion for those with breast cancer which eventually claimed her own life.
Garry adds: 'I'm overwhelmed by the amount of donations and those willing to run alongside me for spells. Interestingly many of those volunteers want to run at night!
'I am by no means any ultra marathon, athletic, 'fitness freak' but pushing myself to raise funds. Michelle spoke about having a bench installed here after her trips to the pharmacy during the covid pandemic. I feel now it's only right to fulfil her wish. '

The response to Rangers choosing Russell Martin to lead them into their new future has been underwhelming, and I get it in a way. It was between him and Ancelotti. When I first saw the latter linked, I thought, 'Jesus! Carlo?' But, no, it was his son, Davide, who's never managed before. Maybe there was a fantasist element among the Rangers fanbase who worked themselves up into a frenzy over that surname, therefore, and now they're disappointed that they've been left with Martin. But he deserves a fair crack at showing what he can do with this opportunity. There was a similar reaction when Celtic appointed Ange Postecoglou, remember. The jibes started as soon as he was announced. 'They've brought in an Australian bloke who's just been working in Japan,' and all that. But Postecoglou didn't turn out to be too bad, did he? Martin has a similar philosophy to him, too. Rangers might actually try to play football for the first time in goodness knows how many years, and the fans might grow to like his purist style if they give it a chance after the direct approach they witnessed under Philippe Clement. Martin deserves that leeway at the very least. Yes, we all know how badly it went with Southampton in the Premier League last season, but then he got them out of the Championship before that and did it in style. Rangers fans may see his win record in charge of MK Dons and Swansea and reckon they should be aiming for a higher calibre of manager. I say judge him on what he does next, not what he did before. Recruitment will be key for him. Making sure Nicolas Raskin stays would help, too. Last season, Rangers did well in their head-to-heads with Celtic. Yet they still ended up 17 points behind their great rivals in the Premiership. That wasn't where they threw away any chance at the title. It was in their other games. Now Martin needs to find that consistency which will hopefully get the fans on his side. I suspect they would have had an issue with whoever was appointed. That's the nature of football fandom. But let's judge Martin on how he does, not before he's even been shown where his office is at the training ground.

Russell Martin fired Rangers warning by Philippe Clement as axed boss tells his successor what is essential at Ibrox
The former Ibrox boss has spoken about his successor's changes of hitting the ground running at Ibrox Philippe Clement has warned Russell Martin about the lack of stability that has plagued Rangers in recent years. However, he hopes that the new hierarchy at Ibrox can give the Englishman the tools to create his own 'consistent story'. Former Southampton and Swansea boss Martin was officially unveiled as Clement's permanent successor as Gers head coach on Thursday after ex club captain Barry Ferguson has stepped up to the role on an interim basis until the end of the season following Clement's dismissal back in February. Martin's appointment came less than a week after the 49ers Enterprises - spearheaded by new Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh - completed their takeover at Ibrox. Their arrival has also seen further change at boardroom level, with Kevin Thelwell and Dan Purdy both joining the club from Everton as sporting director and technical director respectively after Nils Koppen stood down from his role as the latter. Despite leading the Light Blues to the Premier Sports Cup just two months after his arrival in December 2023, Clement was relieved of his duties earlier this year after just 16 months in the dugout. But the Belgian hopes that the wholesale changes upstairs will give the new man Martin the stability to go out and get the team firing. He told BBC Sport Scotland: "I don't know because a lot of things have changed in the club. "So, a lot of things have changed in the club this last year or the last few years. A lot of things changed over and over again. So I hope because the main thing that's necessary is that the club have stability to work in a good way with the players, with the staff and with everybody in the club to have a consistent story. "I think that's the big part that the club has been lacking for years already. "I hope that the new owners can bring that for the club, for the manager and also for the players."
