Sabah launches first Disaster Command Centre in Malaysia
KOTA KINABALU (July 2): Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor launched the State Disaster Command Centre (SDCC), the first such centre in Malaysia funded by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).
'Developed jointly by the State Disaster Management Community and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), the SDCC would ensure swifter and more coordinated actions in the event of a disaster,' said Hajiji at the opening ceremony of the SDCC at Menara Kinabalu, near here on Wednesday. Located on the fourth floor, Block A Menara Kinabalu, the SDCC will serve as an integrated platform to coordinate the actions of security and rescue agencies, NGOs and research bodies during disasters.
The SDCC is equipped with the latest information and communication technology, including a video conferencing system and a comprehensive database for gathering and analysing disaster information. The RM750,000 centre took eight months to be completed.
Present were Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Ariffin Arif, NADMA Deputy Director General Datuk Dr Abdul Gapar Abu Bakar, State Secretary Datuk Seri Panglima Sr Safar Untong, Sabah Commissioner of Police Datuk Jauteh Dikun, State Internal Affairs and Research Secretary Datuk Ag Shahminan Ag Sahari as the State Disaster Management Committee secretariat and Malaysia Civil Defence Sabah director Mohd Yusoff Samad.

Ellron said the accusations in the report by Malaysiakini are 'baseless slander driven by immature political motives to tarnish my reputation and integrity as an elected representative'. 'I have always upheld the principles of integrity, accountability and clean governance in line with the Sabah state government's commitment to combat corruption,' he said in a Facebook post. 'I have instructed my legal team to take firm action against any party spreading these false allegations.' The Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) deputy president's denial follows a rebuttal from party president Jeffrey Kitingan, who was also implicated in the Malaysiakini report, along with four other Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leaders. On Monday, Sabah assistant industrial development and entrepreneurship minister Andi Suryady Bandy, and Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving bribes related to mineral prospecting licence applications in the state. Yusof is also the chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Bhd, the state government's investment arm. Businessman Albert Wei was charged with bribing them. The alleged scandal was reported last year after a series of videos linking several Sabah assemblymen to it were leaked. The videos allegedly depicted discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in the state. China, Russia to sign SEANWFZ treaty, US reviewing: Mohamad
KUALA LUMPUR: China and Russia have agreed to become signatories to the South-East Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), while the United States is currently reviewing the treaty before signing, Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (pic) said. He said the involvement of superpowers in the treaty would help preserve South-East Asia as a region of peace, free of nuclear weapons. "We have established South-East Asia as a peaceful region and next week, the foreign ministers (of relevant countries) will meet,' he said at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's engagement session with the Malaysian diaspora in Italy held in Rome on Tuesday (July 1). The session was held in conjunction with the prime minister's three-day working visit to Italy. A video recording of the session was shared with Bernama on Wednesday. SEANWFZ, also known as the Bangkok Treaty, was signed in December 1995 in Bangkok by ten Asean member countries. It came into effect in March 1997. The protocol of the treaty commits Nuclear Weapon States (NWS) to respect SEANWFZ and not contribute to any act that violates the treaty and its protocols; to not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against states in the zone; and to not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons within the zone. Malaysia will host the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (58th AMM) and Related Meetings, which will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from July 8 to 11. Malaysia took over the Asean Chairmanship on January 1, 2025, from Laos with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', reflecting the country's commitment to fostering a united and prosperous Asean.
