Chery has handed the Tiggo 7 a timely update, with the Chinese automaker's South African arm revealing local pricing and specifications for the revised lineup.
In June, Chery launched the Tiggo 7 CSH (Chery Super Hybrid), along with the Tiggo Cross HEV (hybrid electric vehicle), in South Africa. Now, following the introduction of the former, new-energy Tiggo 7, the Chinese company has introduced the revised petrol-powered Tiggo 7 to the South African market.

The revised Tiggo 7 lineup is available with the choice of two four-cylinder turbocharged petrol powertrains: a 1.5l unit producing 108kW and 210N.m, and a 1.6l endowed with 147kW and 290N.m of torque. The former is coupled with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the more powerful engine drives the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Chery claims a fuel consumption of 6.9l/100km for the 1.5l and 7.2l/100km for the 1.6l. Both models are equipped with a 51l fuel tank, which allows for an average driving range of 739km and 708km when matching the former and latter figures.

Consumer inflation rises to 3% as beef prices drive food price surge

Stats SA chief director of price statistics, Patrick Kelly, said the year-on-year rate for food and non-alcoholic beverages has notably surged to a 15-month high of 5.1%, with meat prices—especially beef—being the primary culprit behind this uptick. The consumer price inflation in South Africa has edged upwards, reaching 3% in June after holding steady at 2.8% for the previous two months. This increase in inflation indicates a growing pressure on household budgets, particularly due to escalating costs in the food and non-alcoholic beverages sector. Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said the consumer price index (CPI) revealed a month-on-month change of 0.3% in June, suggesting that while inflation remains relatively low, it is inching higher due to sharp increases in certain food categories. Stats SA chief director of price statistics, Patrick Kelly, said the year-on-year rate for food and non-alcoholic beverages has notably surged to a 15-month high of 5.1%, with meat prices—especially beef—being the primary culprit behind this uptick. "Meat – particularly beef – continues to be the main driver of food inflation," Kelly said. "Beef prices spiked for a third successive month, with high annual and monthly increases recorded for stewing beef, mince and steak. Stewing beef rose by an annual 21.2%, the fastest pace on record since the current CPI series began in January 2017." However, it was not just beef that has contributed to the rising food inflation. Other unprocessed food items have also shown significant price increases, with fruits and nuts, as well as vegetables, remaining in double-digit inflation territory for the second month in a row. Items such as beetroot, lettuce, and carrots have been particularly hard-hit, further straining the average consumer's wallet. Contrarily, peanuts have shown a slight reduction in price. In a somewhat positive turn, Stats SA said there have been signs of cooling inflation in several other food categories. Notably, prices for white rice, hot cereals, and cold cereals have decreased, which has softened the annual rate for the cereal products category. Though maize meal continues to see high annual increases, its month-on-month change in June was a modest 0.4%, the lowest increase since November 2024. Some dairy products have also experienced price reductions compared to last year. Fresh full-cream milk, fresh low-fat milk, and eggs have all recorded lower prices, resulting in the milk, other dairy products, and eggs index shifting into deflationary territory with an annual change of -0.5%. Despite this annual decline, the monthly rise of 0.3%—the highest since August 2024—shows that consumers are still facing fluctuating prices, particularly in cheese products which have contributed significantly to this increase. As consumers grapple with these rising food prices, the overall increase in the inflation may serve as a warning of potential challenges ahead for the South African economy. BUSINESS REPORT

SA acts against dumping of Chinese and Thai washing machines

Provisional anti-dumping duties in place for six months. South African consumers will find higher price tags on Samsung, Hisense and other laundry appliances. Picture iStock Top load washing machines imported from China and Thailand are the latest products to encounter anti-dumping duties from the South Africa's International Trade Administration Commission (Itac). The imported washing machines will carry provisional anti-dumping duties for the next six months ranging between 8% and 67%. Itac found evidence that importers from these two countries are dumping their product in the Southern African Customs Union (Sacu) region, causing material harm through, among others, price undercutting and price suppression. The dumping has led to a decline in sales volumes, productivity and growth for appliances giant Defy, the largest producer of the product in South Africa. Defy's application was submitted in July 2024, and the period in which the dumping allegedly took place was 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024. Itac is allowed a maximum of 12 months from initiation date to complete an anti-dumping investigation. ALSO READ: SAMTC ramping up the fight against tyre dumping and illicit trade Popular but harmful It is alleged that automatic top load machines with a capacity exceeding 10kg but less than 17kg imported from the two countries are being dumped in the region. The machines are popular household appliances in SA. The importers – Samsung Tevo, Livance and Hisense – were alerted to the investigation and responded to the allegations of dumping. The commission found that there is a 'causal link' between the dumped imports and the injury and threat of material harm to industry in the Sacu region. Provisional anti-dumping duties are short-term emergency measures imposed before a final determination is made. This is done to prevent 'further injury' – in this case to Defy – while the investigation continues. The provisional duties against Chinese and Thai manufacturers will be in place for six months from 18 July. The commission found price undercutting and price suppression during the investigation period. It said although Defy's sales volumes increased over the investigation period, the market share of imports increased over the same period. 'It should be noted that a single injury indicator is sufficient for the commission to make a determination on material injury and that an injury finding may be based solely on import volumes or import prices or both.' Import domination The commission found that although Defy's market share increased over the investigation period, the alleged dumped imports also increased – and dominated the Sacu market. The duties will remain in place while Itac continues its investigation until a final determination is made with recommendations to the minister of trade, industry and competition. The washing machines are the latest in recent anti-dumping measures taken against China and Thailand. Itac also introduced duties ranging from 9.6% for Thailand and 55% for China on structural steel products following an application from ArcelorMittal. That investigation period spanned April 2022 to March 2024, and found that imports caused material harm in the Sacu region from April 2021. Itac has also investigated the dumping of pneumatic tyres for cars, buses and trucks from Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, allegedly circumventions from China. The applicant asking Itac for relief was the South African Tyre Manufacturing Conference (SATMC), which requested duties ranging from 21% (Cambodia) to 68% (Thailand) and 84% (Vietnam). The reason for the application was to prevent 'alleged country-hopping' to evade existing duties on Chinese tyres. The alleged circumvention happened from March 2022 to May 2024.
