New evidence of Ukrainian war crimes emerges
Russia's Investigative Committee previously opened a case into the deaths of dozens of locals at the hands of Kiev's troops that had been occupying the village before its liberation in January.
The bodies were found on the outskirts of the village, the 'Severny Veter' ('Northern Wind') Telegram channel reported on Monday. Russian troops were only able to scout the area after neutralizing Ukrainian firing positions in the neighboring village of Cherkasskoye Porechnoye, the channel said.
'We are deeply sorry [to say] that bodies of locals that were brutally murdered by Ukrainian Nazis were discovered in the area,' said the channel. It did not specify the exact number of bodies found, but said that the information has already been handed over to Russia's investigative authorities.
'Severny Veter' also published a video from the scene showing at least two bodies, with one lying in the yard of a private house and another discovered in what appears to be a cellar or a room of a building filled with debris and rubble. The Russian Investigative Committee has not commented on these developments so far.
Russkoye Porechnoye was liberated in early January following months of occupation. Ukrainian troops launched a major cross-border incursion into Kursk Region last August, marking the largest attack on internationally recognized Russian territory since the escalation of hostilities between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022.
The area under Ukrainian control has been steadily shrinking, with the Russian military retaking the occupied territories. Last month, the Russian General Staff reported that around two thirds of the territory that had initially been captured by the Ukrainian military during the incursion has been liberated.
Following the liberation of Russkoye Porechnoye, Russian investigators alleged that Kiev's troops had raped, tortured, and murdered the local inhabitants. They published gruesome videos of bodies piled in cellars in some of the homes inside the community. Several captured Ukrainian servicemen acknowledged committing the crimes while being interrogated, saying they had been acting on the orders of their commanders.
A total of 22 civilians were killed in the village, the Investigative Committee said in January, adding that the Ukrainian soldiers had also raped at least eight local women before killing them. According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, Kiev's troops had turned the cellars of the local homes into 'torture chambers.'

Moscow reacts to Ukrainian attack on key oil pipeline to EU
The attack on a pipeline delivering Russian oil to Hungary is proof that there are no boundaries to the malign activities of the Kiev regime, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has stated. Earlier on Monday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the oil being supplied to his country had run dry after Ukraine targeted the Druzhba pipeline system. Szijjarto suggested that the 'outrageous' attack was an attempt by Kiev and its supporters in Brussels to drag Budapest, which has maintained its neutrality, into the conflict. Zakharova commented on Telegram that since the Western-backed coup in Ukraine in 2014, 'Russia has been warning the ideologues nurturing the Kiev regime… that this monster – immoral and bloodthirsty – will never stop and will spread like a nasty infection all over the world.' The Ukrainian authorities 'have already committed terrorist attacks in Africa. They have shown up in the Middle East. They have drawn citizens of Central Asia into terrorism. In Europe, they have mastered the black arms market. They got into the illegal organ trade for its Western customers,' she wrote. Last year, Mali and Niger severed diplomatic ties with Ukraine after the government of Vladimir Zelensky admitted to providing aid to Touareg militants, who ambushed a patrol of Malian government troops and Russian contractors. Moscow had previously accused Ukraine of cooperating with Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS), the armed group which overthrew the Syrian government of Bashar Assad last year. Russia has also accused Ukrainian intelligence of masterminding the terrorist attack on the Crocus City Hall concert venue outside Moscow in March 2024, in which four Tajikistan nationals killed 149 people and injured 600 others. On Monday, Zelensky is expected at the White House following Friday's summit in Alaska between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump, at which both leaders underlined their commitment to resolving the Ukraine conflict.

Trump accuses Biden of driving Russia and China closer together
US President Donald Trump has accused his predecessor, Joe Biden, of inadvertently drawing 'natural enemies' Russia and China closer together. Trump made the claim following his summit in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, which focused on a resolution of the Ukraine conflict. In an interview with Fox News, Trump was asked about Western sanctions on Russia and his recent threat to impose secondary sanctions on countries importing Russian energy, such as India and China. 'He [Biden] did something that was unthinkable. He drove China and Russia together. That's not good… it's the one thing you didn't want to do. Because they are basically natural enemies,' Trump told Fox News' Sean Hannity. The US president went on to claim that Russia's vast territory is something that China needs to accommodate its massive population, but 'because of pure stupidity, they were driven together.' Biden's foreign policy included simultaneous confrontation with both Moscow and Beijing, where Washington launched sweeping sanctions against Russia over Ukraine, while tightening restrictions on high technology exports, such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence, to China. Moscow and Beijing both slammed the sanctions as unilateral, illegal, and a form of economic bullying, framing them as proof of Washington's disregard for international law. The two countries have since deepened energy and trade cooperation. Moscow has redirected much of its oil and gas exports toward China, while bilateral commerce has expanded to record levels in 2023 and 2024. The two countries have also shifted to settling transactions in local currencies rather than the US dollar, underscoring their effort to reduce reliance on Western financial systems. Since taking office in January, Trump has kept up pressure on China while at the same time moving toward a closer relationship with Russia. His administration has introduced a series of new tariffs on Chinese goods, while refraining from imposing new sanctions on Moscow. The US president described his talks with Putin in Alaska on Friday as 'very productive' and achieving 'great progress.

US calls off latest trade talks with India
US negotiators have called off a planned visit to New Delhi for a sixth round of talks on a bilateral trade agreement, Indian media outlets reported on Saturday. A delegation led by Assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch was scheduled to visit India from August 25 to August 30, but the trip has been reportedly canceled, the Financial Express reported, citing an anonymous Indian government official. 'From their (US) side, the trade negotiations (are) halted, whether (this is) forever or temporary, there's still no idea,' the source told the outlet. 'They said they won't come for the August 25 meeting.' The alleged cancelation of the visit comes amid the backdrop of escalating trade tensions between India and the US after President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports with a further 25% to be added on August 27 for New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil. Trade talks between New Delhi and Washington have encountered a hurdle, reportedly due to India's hesitation to allow greater access to its agriculture and dairy sectors for US products. On Friday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that his government will 'stand like a wall' to protect the interests of the nation's farmers. Another point of contention for the US is India's oil purchases from Russia. An official source quoted by the Financial Express stated that India cannot afford to stop importing oil from Russia, citing significant cost implications. The source noted that while India's oil imports from the US have increased, Russian oil is still being purchased, and halting these deliveries is not possible. After his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, Trump suggested he may delay the additional 25% tariff on India. The US president told Fox News that he would consider the question of secondary tariffs on countries buying Russian oil in 'two or three weeks.'
