All-way stop signs coming to 14th Avenue and Peace Garden Drive Southwest

Yahoo26-03-2025

Mar. 26—ROCHESTER — Rochester Public Works will be adding all-way stop signs at the intersection of 14th Avenue SW and Peace Garden Drive Southwest on March 27, 2025, weather permitting.
Currently, the intersection has a side-street stop, and Peace Garden Drive Southwest is closed to the east for parking ramp construction. As a result, all traffic to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus is entering from 14th Avenue Southwest, leading to backups that sometimes block the entrance to the emergency department.
The all-way stop signs aim to improve safety and traffic flow. They will remain in place until a mini-roundabout is built in 2026. The mini-roundabout was identified as mitigation in the traffic study for the parking ramp and is a required part of the development. Mini-roundabouts help keep traffic moving efficiently while slowing vehicles to enhance safety for all road users.

Drivers debate obscure Aussie road rule marking attracting $600 fine: 'So confusing'

It's a familiar frustration for Aussie drivers — confusing road markings and missing signs that turn everyday parking into a guessing game. In Melbourne's southeast this week, one local has sparked debate online after spotting a fire hydrant next to a painted parking bay in Mount Waverley, unsure if it's legal to park there. Beside the hydrant on the street is a triangle pointing toward it, but further to the left is a white parking line. In Victoria, road rules state drivers must leave a one-metre gap from hydrants unless signage allows otherwise. But as the Melburnian pointed out, there was no such signage in the location. "There isn't a signpost, and what's the point of the painted parking line on the left?" they asked. The lack of a sign — and the presence of a marked bay — left many scratching their heads. Some argued the space was designed for parking. "Yes, it's ok to park there," a person commented. "Council won't fine you for parking in a marked bay unless you don't comply with parking signage — seems there is no parking signage here." That notion prompted another person to respond: "Interesting, because we had a fire hydrant in front of our house and parked there without a problem for over 20 years." "Why do they make the road rules so confusing?" they asked. Others warned that fire safety regulations take precedence, urging drivers to steer clear even if the area looks legal. "The hydrant rule definitely supercedes painted car parks," another weighed in. "A parking inspector or firefighter isn't going to care if they come to give you a ticket or have to push your car out of the way with their truck to get a hose connected." But according to VicRoads, the department in charge of the state's transport department, drivers are not permitted to stop, park, or leave their vehicle within one metre of a fire hydrant, fire hydrant indicator, or fire plug indicator — unless they're operating a public bus, taxi or minibus. Drivers warned major road rule change with $961 fines 'just weeks' away Common road act that carries a fine in every Aussie state Drivers warned cars and wages could be seized over $160 million issue Importantly, that one-metre rule refers to the horizontal distance between the hydrant and the vehicle on the road, not how far the hydrant sits back from the kerb, which explains the white line on the left. So unless you're in an exceptionally small car, it's best to steer clear. Failing to comply can result in a $118 fine, rising to $122 from July 1 due to indexation, or a maximum court-imposed penalty of up to $592 (increasing to $610). Do you have a story tip? Emelia Hartford Prepares For Intense Pikes Peak Race In Porsche GT4 RS

Legendary car builder, YouTube icon, actress, and professional race car driver Emelia Hartford is preparing to tackle one of the world's most challenging hill climb routes, Pikes Peak, as she enters the prestigious GT4 class. Backed by Mobil 1, supported by Porsche Colorado Springs and BBI Autosport, Hartford is busy testing the 500 bhp Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport that will carve its way towards Pikes Peak's 14,000ft summit via 156 turns during the 2025 'Race to the Clouds". Support also comes from Pikes Peak Hall of Famer Jeff Zwart. 'Working with Jeff Zwart and the entire Mobil 1 team is truly an honor. Jeff is not just a legendary driver—he's a mentor who brings a level of calm intensity that's contagious; I joke he is Master Yoda. The man knows this mountain physically and mentally. Every bit of advice he gives is rooted in both precision and wisdom, and it's taught me to think differently about how I approach a run like this. And of course, running with the Mobil 1 team, a brand with a legacy of performance and innovation is truly a dream come true' Hartford tells Matthew MacConnell. Emelia Hartford at 2025 Pikes Peak Emelia Hartford Over the 12.5-mile route, Hartford will face rapidly changing weather conditions and extreme altitude—the ultimate test of both women and machine. However, she's no stranger to intense racing after recently smashing a world record at Famaso Dragstrip, California. When asked how she'll stay focused during the intense race, Hartford replied 'Focus, for me, comes somewhat easily. I am openly a bit obsessive when I dive into something. When I'm on that mountain, I'm not thinking about anything, it's kind of the only time that seems to happen. Pure bliss, no fear, no distractions just me vs the mountain. One challenge honestly is staying on my content game. I usually am very active in sharing my life with the world but that has been a bit more difficult when being so focused and locked in with my driving. Instead of shooting, editing, and posting I have been studying the road, watching driving footage, running the sim, and trying to memorize and visualize every section of the course. And honestly, the mountain demands your full attention, it's mostly blind turns at full throttle so it's not hard to stay focused when every corner could be your last.' Emelia Hartford at 2025 Pikes Peak Emelia Hartford Participating in Pikes Peak is a dream for many, including Hartford who said she set a goal to take her driving to the next level this year while working towards racing professionally in the most important and iconic motorsports races. 'We are starting with a bang with Pikes Peak. I watched Pikes Peak since I first got into cars, it's one of those races you dream about but is also more intimidating than most, and I don't get intimidated easily. It's not just a race, it's like nothing else on earth, it's a mountain with a serious legacy. Getting the chance to compete here feels like stepping into something sacred. It's intimidating, sure—but it's also a moment of growth for me, both as a driver and as a person. I've been through a lot in life, so I really live for moments like this!' Luckily, Hartford feels positive about the Mobil 1-powered 'dialed and balanced' Porsche GT4 RS that will take her to the top. Emelia Hartford's Porsche GT4 RS Emelia Hartford 'It really is very planted and predictable. It gives you confidence without taking away the respect you need to have for the road. It's been great driving something that I don't have to second guess so I can focus on the mountain more than the car. And of course, having Mobil 1 keeps my race car running smooth and strong – which is exactly what you need when every bit of engine power counts on such a tough mountain climb like Pikes Peak. I'm smiling cheek to cheek on every run.' Austin Johansen, North America Mobil 1 marketing manager, said "We're excited to welcome Emelia to her first 'Race to the Clouds' and protect the cars of seven drivers who rely on our products to power them through this challenging 12.42-mile course. It's really rewarding to be part of such an iconic event that motorsports fans everywhere look forward to.' Good luck, Emelia!

Why were Waymo cars targeted during Los Angeles protests? What to know about them

Why were Waymo cars targeted during Los Angeles protests? What to know about them Waymo vehicles were set on fire during Los Angeles protests. Here's what to know about Waymo, its vehicles, and their vulnerability to fires. Show Caption Hide Caption LA protesters ignite Waymo taxis, see the remains Protesters vandalized and set Waymo autonomous taxis on fire amid anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. Several Waymo driverless vehicles were destroyed during anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. The flaming vehicles posed threats protestors may not have been fully aware of because of their unique design. First responders and protestors were likely exposed to dangerous chemical compounds that could be fatal in high concentrations. The image of burning Waymo driverless cars is becoming synonymous with the June 2025 Los Angeles protests. So, how did Waymo cars get to the scene of the protest in the first place and why were the vehicles being targeted? A Waymo spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY on June 9 that the company temporarily suspended its services in downtown Los Angeles "out of an abundance of caution." Here's how protestors used Waymo vehicles in the midst of a controversy over immigration enforcement that's left the country reeling. What are Waymo cars? Waymo is a company under the Alphabet (Google) umbrella that is developing driverless vehicle technology using cameras, radar and lidar sensors, and advanced computer systems. It launched a driverless ride-hailing service in several major cities. A Waymo car is a vehicle owned by the company and equipped with technology that is capable of self-driving. Passengers can summon Waymo vehicles to their location and ride in the vehicles to their intended destination without interacting with a driver. Where does Waymo operate? Phoenix, Arizona San Francisco, California Los Angeles, California Austin, Texas The self-driving ride hailing service will soon be available in Atlanta, Georgia and Miami, Florida, as well, according to the company website. It has been tested in over 15 American states. Waymo driverless cars targeted by protestors in downtown Los Angeles A YouTube video by Wall Street Journal News shows protestors swarming a burning Waymo driverless car that is ablaze. The vehicle is covered in anti-ICE slogans. A masked person is seen smashing the vehicle with a hammer. The vehicles were summoned to the scene, according to the Wall Street Journal News video above. Waymo disputes this, saying that the vehicles were present at the scene of the protests, not summoned with the intention of being set on fire. Their unique powertrain systems (motors and batteries) cause them to burn even hotter than internal combustion engine vehicles. Furthermore, EV batteries can easily overheat and ignite cars in extreme heat. Electric vehicle fires can be more difficult to put out than internal combustion engine vehicle fires. Lithium-ion batteries experience "thermal runway, a chemical process that isn't as easily extinguished as a gasoline fire in part because it doesn't require oxygen" according to MotorTrend. So, setting the Waymo driverless EVs on fire created an extremely burdensome situation for local authorities. "I think protests need to be peaceful period, and anytime it deteriorates into violence that is a problem and it absolutely messes with the overall message," Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said during a press interview. How many Waymo cars were burned in Los Angeles during protests? At least five Waymo Jaguar I-Pace vehicles were destroyed during the Los Angeles protests. A new Jaguar I-Pace starts at a whopping $72,500. So, the total cost of the destroyed Waymo driverless vehicles could exceed $362,500 before accounting for the price of Waymo's autonomous driving technology like radar and lidar sensors. Waymo's self-driving technology could add $100,000 to the cost of a Jaguar I-Pace due to the price of multiple sensors, cameras, and advanced autonomous driving systems, according to Slate Magazine. If this estimate is accurate, the total damages to the vehicles could be close to $862,500. Why the Los Angeles Waymo car fires were so dangerous Lithium-ion battery fires weren't the only risk to Americans during the Los Angeles protests of 2025. hydrogen fluoride, a toxic and corrosive chemical compound, was also expelled from the burning Waymo driverless cars, said Scientific American. This chemical compound could cause a person to cough up blood in mere minutes. Inhaling high concentrations of hydrogen fluoride can be fatal, so the burning Waymo vehicles presented a deadly risk to those nearby. First responders to lithium-ion battery fires can develop breathing difficulties and throat burns while trying to extinguish the flames. Ultimately, the events that took place on June 8 have sparked a nationwide conversation involving the current administration's immigration policies, the protests, and the federal government's reaction to the protests.
