Canadian university QB to attend Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills rookie minicamps
Wilfrid Laurier University quarterback Taylor Elgersma may have gone undrafted by the NFL over the weekend, but his hopes of playing in the league are not finished.
The university has confirmed the London, Ont., native will be attending the Green Bay Packers rookie minicamp from May 2 to 4 followed by the Buffalo Bills rookie minicamp from May 9 to 11.
After leading Laurier's football team to the Vanier Cup, where they lost to Laval, Elgersma was named the Hec Crighton Trophy winner as Canada's top football player.

He finished the season by throwing 20 touchdowns, 330.4 yards per game and 2,659 total passing yards, all tops at the Canadian university level.
Then in January, he was invited to play in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., which is a showcase for many of the top NFL draft-eligible football players south of the border.

Following that appearance, Elgersma headed to the University at Buffalo's Pro Day, where members of the Bills staff were in attendance, before also making a visit to Green Bay to meet with staff.
Although Elgersma went undrafted over the weekend, Indiana quarterback Kurtis Rourke, of Oakville, Ont., was selected in the seventh round by the San Francisco 49ers. Stanford wide receiver Elic Ayomanor, who is an Alberta native, went in the fourth round.
While Elgersma may be in tough to continue his playing career south of the border despite the pending opportunities, the door will remain open in Canada for him as well.
The CFL draft will take place on Tuesday night, and he is the 14th-ranked prospect on the CFL scouting list so he should hear his name called early.

In fact, Joe Couch didn't even punt the football in the first half but he was busy as Saskatchewan's field goal and convert holder. Couch had some tense moments tough on his first snap of the game as he bobbled the hold on a 53-yard attempt before pitching it back to kicker Brett Lauther, who made a great play to punt it as far as he did. Couch settled in just fine after that. However, Saskatchewan signed another punter earlier this week, so the situation is worth monitoring heading into Week 2. Article content Article content 10. Not to bring up a bad memory but remember last year when Roughriders kicker Brett Lauther missed four field goals in a game against the Montreal Alouettes? Since then, Lauther has missed just one field goal — going 29 for 30 — including 23 straight. Lauther is also just six points shy of 1,000 for his career. Also deserving of a shout-out is long snapper Jorgen Hus, who has been along the way for all those points as he played his 150th career game on Thursday night. Article content

Calgary's Thomson makes good first impression in first pro round at RBC Canadian Open
CALEDON - You wouldn't know that Hunter Thomson was playing his first professional round of golf. It certainly didn't feel any different to him. The 21-year-old from Calgary fired a 3-under 67 on Thursday at the RBC Canadian Open. A standout collegiate player for the University of Michigan, Thomson officially turned pro as soon as he teed it up at the only PGA Tour event in Canada. 'I honestly didn't feel as nervous as I thought I would,' said Thomson outside the clubhouse at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley. 'I mean, I got up there and I just felt comfortable. It's like, this is just another round of golf, and just send it, man. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW 'And I absolutely smoked my first drive.' That's not just his impression. Starting on the par-4 10th hole, his first drive flew 323 yards. A 94-yard approach shot got him to within three feet of the hole, and he sunk the putt for birdie. Thomson finished the day with four birdies but bogeyed the par-4 13th hole. 'This is not college golf. It's a much bigger stage,' said Thomson. 'But I'm competing against a lot of the same guys that I've been competing against, a lot of young guys out here. 'So I'm just comfortable out here and I really thought that on Tuesday and Wednesday. I was like, 'I'm actually comfortable out here.' It's really nice.' There are 24 Canadians in the field at TPC Toronto in Osprey Valley, a sprawling parkland-style course in Alton, a community within the municipality of Caledon, Ont. Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont., was the low Canadian, firing a 5-under 65 in the morning to share the clubhouse lead. Saskatchewan Roughriders kick off 2025 CFL season with 31-26 win over Ottawa Redblacks
The Saskatchewan Roughriders won the CFL's first game of the 2025 season, but it was a costly 31-26 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks. The Roughriders lost four starters to injury, including three in the first 17 minutes of Thursday's game. Receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker appeared to injure his left ankle, tailback A.J. Ouellette suffered a suspected head injury and defensive back Rolan Milligan left the game with an apparent neck injury. Offensive lineman Payton Collins in his CFL debut was injured in the third quarter when an Ottawa player rolled up the back of his right leg. None of the four injured 'Riders returned to the game. Ottawa scored a touchdown on their first possession of the season. The Redblacks drove 87 yards on 10 plays with backup quarterback Dustin Crum reaching the end zone on a one-yard sneak. Redblacks quarterback Dru Brown was seven-for-seven passing for 84 yards on the drive. Saskatchewan responded with 17 unanswered points in the second quarter. Quarterback Trevor Harris completed 19 of 26 pass attempts for 277 yards and two touchdown throws in the game. QB depth stretches far across CFL as season kickoff looms His backup quarterback Tommy Stevens scored on a one-yard run 13 seconds into the second quarter and Samuel Emilus hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Harris seven minutes later to increase Saskatchewan's lead to 14-7. A 17-yard field goal by Brett Lauther with 17 seconds left in the quarter gave the Riders a 17-7 halftime lead. Emilus had an impressive first half with six receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown. He finished the game with eight catches for 133 yards. Thomas Bertrand-Hudon took over for Ouellette in the Saskatchewan backfield and added two touchdowns in the third quarter. He had a 15-yard reception for a major three minutes into the quarter and he scored on a six-yard run late in the quarter. It was the second two-touchdown game of Betrand-Hudon's CFL career. He scored twice in a 33-26 loss to the B.C. Lions on Sept. 29, 2023, during his rookie season. Geno Lewis, on an eight-yard reception, William Stanback, on a two-yard run, and Justin Hardy, on a 27-yard reception, also scored second-half touchdowns for the Redblacks, who cut the deficit to 31-26 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter. Brown completed 34 of 41 passes for 413 yards with two touchdowns. Hardy, with eight catches for 133 yards, and Bralon Addison, with eight receptions for 112 yards, led Ottawa's receivers.
