Washington State Football Preview 2025: Cougars Season Prediction, Win Total Projection, Top Players
Get that ground game going. It's not that Washington State didn't have a rushing attack over the years. It just wasn't emphasized as much as the high-octane passing game, especially when you have Cam Ward under center. John Mateer went off, but the running backs now have to become a bigger deal. It's a pivot for a program that didn't hit the 2,000-yard rushing mark in over a decade, and then had a fantastic 2025. By the way, South Dakota State ran for over 3,500 yards last season. So …

Washington State Cougars Key Player
Angel Johnson, RB Sr.And Kirby Vorhees, and Maxwell Woods. Washington State didn't get South Dakota State's star rusher Amar Johnson - he's a Green Bay Packer now - but it brought in three other terrific Jackrabbit backs.Again, the Cougars ran well last year - at least for them - and again, the quarterback was the most dangerous option. This year's offense needs Johnson and the rotation of runners to take over.
Washington State Cougars Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss
Top Transfer In: Caleb Franci, LB Sr.Out of all the terrific players coming in from South Dakota State, Franci should be the most productive new star. He's only 6-1 and 190 pounds, but he's a big hitter with wonderful range, making 78 tackles with seven broken up passes and 11 tackles for loss last season.Top Transfer Out: John Mateer, QB Jr.A whole slew of players followed former Cougar head coach Jake Dickert to Wake Forest, including offensive tackle Fa'ailili Fa'amoe, guard AJ Hasson, and receiver Carlos Hernandez. But Mateer was a Heisman-caliber playmaker last year who led Wazzu in rushing and was one of the nation's most effective passers. Now he's about to be a superstar at Oklahoma.
Washington State Cougars Key Game
Washington, Sept. 20There's no Pac-12 Championship to play for, and it's not getting into the College Football Playoff with a few too many tough road games, but beat the arch-rival for the second year in a row, and the year is made in before October.- 2025 Washington State Schedule Breakdown

Washington State Cougars 2025 Season Prediction, Win Total, What Will Happen
Just how quickly can the new coaching staff make this work? This might not be the Washington State you're used to, but the starting 11 on defense should be terrific, and an improved running attack will make up for a toned-down passing game. The Cougars will get off to a hot start, but a run of four road games in five dates from September 13th to October 18th - and a home game against Washington for the fifth game - will be an issue.
Including the first of two games against fellow Pac-12 brother Oregon State, six road games in nine will be too much to overcome. But it'll still be a bowl season, it'll be a good first year for the new regime, and then it'll be on to life in the new Pac-12.Set The Washington State Win Total At … 6Likely Wins: Idaho, Louisiana Tech, San Diego State50/50 Games: at Colorado State, at James Madison, at North Texas, Oregon State, at Oregon State, Toledo, at VirginiaLikely Losses: at Ole Miss, Washington 2025 Washington State PreviewWashington State Offense BreakdownWashington State Defense Breakdown

Dabo Swinney reveals Clemson running back Jarvis Green will miss most of the 2025 season
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided several health updates following Wednesday evening's practice at Jervey Meadows, including unfortunate news regarding redshirt sophomore running back Jarvis Green. Green is expected to miss most of the 2025 season after undergoing foot surgery. Swinney said it's the most serious injury the team has dealt with so far in fall camp. 'He's going to probably be out most of the year,' Swinney said. 'We had to do surgery on his foot, so he'll have a chance to come back at the end of the season. I hate that for him. I really do.' After redshirting in 2023, Green appeared in nine games last season, battling through multiple injuries. He finished the year with 53 rushing yards on nine carries and caught two passes out of the backfield. One of those receptions was a 25-yard touchdown in Clemson's College Football Playoff loss to Texas—a career first and a highlight moment on a big stage. Swinney said they may explore the possibility of a medical redshirt for Green, though nothing has been finalized. 'We'll just have to see how it all goes,' Swinney noted. In total, Green has played in 11 games over his Clemson career, logging 57 rushing yards and 35 receiving yards on 37 offensive snaps. Swinney also shared updates on several other Tigers. Defensive lineman Peter Woods missed Wednesday's practice due to illness, while safety Khalil Barnes is dealing with what Swinney called a 'short-term' injury and was spotted in a yellow jersey. Running back Jay Haynes continues progressing in his recovery from an ACL tear and is 'one step closer' to being cleared for practice. Meanwhile, cornerback Jeadyn Lukus is expected to return to practice sometime next week. Phillies Could Trade For Orioles' Adley Rutschman If JT Realmuto Leaves In Free Agency
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies seem set for the playoffs as they've held one of the best records in the National League for most of the season. Barring a late-season collapse, they'll have another chance to secure a World Series title for Bryce Harper and Co. But there's reason to believe this will be the final season of their championship window. Key veterans like Kyle Schwarber and Ranger Suarez are set to hit free agency after this year and could opt for big contracts with new teams, leaving the Phillies' aging core behind. But the potential departure of one veteran star, catcher JT Realmuto, might open up the chance to reload with a younger one at the vacated position. "Even if Realmuto is no longer at the height of his powers, the combination of him still being productive and his excellent reputation around the league will likely mean he garners a two or three-year commitment this offseason," Tim Kelly wrote for On Pattison. "Eventually, you have to get younger." WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 06: J.T. (Photo by) More Rapfogel/Getty Given the likely market value of Realmuto's next contract, Kelly suggested that the Phillies look to a trade for Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman instead. "While Rutschman will get a raise from his $5.5 million salary in 2026 — his penultimate year of arbitration eligibility — it will still probably be cheaper than whatever Realmuto gets in free agency," Kelly added. "As Kyle Schwarber's price skyrockets, any extra savings might help president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski to retain the NL MVP candidate and still build a World Series-caliber roster." As he enjoys another productive season, Realmuto's next contract is projected to reach $55 million over four years, per Spotrac. Given that latest update, the Phillies could be looking to make a trade for a younger star in the offseason. More MLB: Yankee Legends Floated to Replace Aaron Boone; Here's Who Would Really Get Job

Joel Klatt Gushes Over Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith
FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt praises Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith, calling him possibly the best player he's seen since starting his college football coverage and predicting a legendary career ahead. FOX Sports analyst and commentator Joel Klatt has set sky-high expectations for Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. Appearing on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Klatt couldn't say enough about the Buckeyes' standout, praising his talent and potential with glowing enthusiasm. 'The quarterback is not going to be asked to be Superman for Ohio State,' Klatt said. They should be able to run it well, their defense should be solid, and they've got, I think, the best wide receiver that I've seen in college football since I've been covering college football in Jeremiah Smith. He might be the best player I've seen since I started covering college football. 'There's only two players that I felt like, as their true freshman year, they should be on an NFL field: Adrian Peterson and Jeremiah Smith… Smith is ridiculous. I think Jeremiah Smith — I mean, this is probably too much hype — Jeremiah Smith, if he just keeps working hard and developing, I think he has a chance to be a top five receiver in the history of football.' Joel Klatt's praise for Jeremiah Smith is nothing short of extraordinary, but after the freshman season Smith just had, it might not be so far off the mark. In his first year with the Buckeyes, Smith rewrote the record books. He set a new FBS freshman receiving record with 1,315 yards, finishing the season with 76 receptions, 15 receiving touchdowns, and even added a rushing score. Despite a quiet game against Texas in the College Football Playoff semifinal, where he managed just one catch for three yards, Smith still left a major impact on the postseason. Across four playoff games, he totaled 19 catches for 381 yards and five touchdowns. He found the end zone twice in both the Rose Bowl against Oregon and in the matchup against Tennessee. His performance in the Rose Bowl was especially electric, recording 7 receptions for 187 yards and 2 touchdowns. For his outstanding debut season, Smith was named Big Ten Receiver of the Year and earned First-Team All-American honors. With a résumé like that already in hand, Klatt's high expectations suddenly seem very realistic. As of today, Jeremiah Smith holds the fourth-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy, behind only three quarterbacks: Texas' Arch Manning, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, and Clemson's Cade Klubnik. If Smith has already positioned himself among college football's elite after just one year, his rise is only beginning. All eyes will be on him when he returns to the field for his sophomore season opener as Ohio State faces Texas on August 30 at noon ET.
