MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District on Friday said a contractor accidentally released nearly 10,000 gallons of sewage into Lincoln Creek earlier this week.

It happened on Tuesday, March 11. According to MMSD, workers with Veolia Water Milwaukee dumped sanitary sewage from a vacuum truck into a storm sewer, mistaking it for a sanitary sewer.

As a result, the sewage entered Lincoln Creek near 32nd and Hampton. MMSD reported the incident to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
On Wednesday, MMSD said Veolia crews plugged and cleaned the impacted storm sewer before reopening it for normal operation. Veolia also implemented a mandatory supervisor approval process and scheduled refresher training for its field crews, which will start next week.
MMSD is a regional government agency that handles water reclamation, tasked with capturing and cleaning wastewater, for 29 communities in the Greater Milwaukee area that cover 423 square miles.

MMSD said it will continue working with Veolia to determine why the mistake happened.

Fire breaks out at recycling centre
A fire has broken out at a recycling centre in Shrewsbury. It started shortly before 05:00 BST at the Veolia site on Battlefield Enterprise Park. About 30 firefighters were deployed at its peak. The blaze was still ongoing on Saturday afternoon, but Shropshire fire and Rescue Service said it was under control and there are no casulaties. The fire was initially reported as involving 80 tonnes of waste, but Mark Price, area commander at the fire service, said crews arrived to find one bale alight. He said crews were likely to be at the scene for some time due to the amount of smoke in the building but the incident was "contained". Veolia clears up cause of discolored water in Midstate
(WHTM) — After weeks of frustration from customers, Veolia said it pinpointed the cause of discolored water in the Midstate. The company said three water main breaks, a pump malfunction and a system-wide usage surge all kicked up naturally occurring minerals in the pipes, causing discoloration. Customers have complained of brown water for weeks. Many told abc27 News they felt the company itself lacked clarity throughout the ordeal. Back in June, Veolia blamed discolored water in Marysville, Susquehanna Township and Lower Paxton Township on sediment kicked up following a training test by firefighters from Rescue Fire Company 37. The fire company's chief said its crew conducted training in the area but that the water issues started before they got there. 'For Veolia Water to cast blame on the fire department for a preexisting condition is unwarranted and a blatant lie,' Chief Larry Reist said.
