Football round-up: New Zealand's Chris Wood enters elite Premier League company

. A stooping diving header from the All Whites captain which brought his Premier League haul for the 2024-25 season to 20 and counting - and in doing so, inducted himself into one of the division's most exclusive clubs.
The goal came against his former club Leicester City and capped off what has been a career-best top-flight campaign for the Nottingham Forest forward. His form has helped power Forest to a completely unpredicted challenge for European football.
But in terms of a personal landmark, Wood now becomes just the 51st player in the 32-year history of the Premier League to hit the 20-goal mark in a single season. Tottenham Hotspur's Teddy Sheringham was the first in 1992-93, while Alexander Isak, Wood's replacement at Newcastle United, was number 50 last term. Alan Shearer managed it seven times in total with Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle. Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero did it six times with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City respectively, while 18 other players have done it on multiple occasions.
Players like James Beattie, Danny Ings and Ivan Toney have all achieved the feat - hardly household names, with the greatest of respect.
So you might be thinking, so what? But the impressiveness of the feat is best explained by those who never quite managed it.

Photo:Take Jermain Defoe for example. In his Premier League career at West Ham, Portsmouth, Sunderland and, most significantly, Tottenham Hotspur, the hotshot scored 162 goals, the 10th highest in Premier League history. His 24 goals off the bench count him as the league's most prolific super-sub. He is also one of only three players to have scored five goals in a single game.
But for all his brilliance and goal-scoring acumen, he never scored 20 goals in a Premier League season. He shares that position with other iconic names like Michael Owen, Eric Cantona, Dennis Bergkamp, Gianfranco Zola and many more.
Meanwhile, there's a long list of names who only ever made it to 19 goals but fell short of 20. Eleven in total - Dean Holdsworth, Mark Bright, Michael Bridges, Marcus Stewart, Roque Santa Cruz, Nicolas Anelka, Christian Benteke, Phil Foden, Dominic Solanke and Ollie Watkins - have all found out how hard it is to break that barrier. Michael Owen, a 2001 World Footballer of the Year, fell short by one goal on two occasions.
Wood looked like he might be heading for the same fate. In mid-February, he scored his 18th goal of the season with 13 games left to find two more. But a dip in form and an injury suffered on international duty slowed his progress.
In the end, though, he delivered, and his strike against the relegated Foxes puts him in rare company, capping off a magnificent individual campaign in style and with two more games to add to that goal tally.

If Auckland City are going to be crowned overall A-League champions in their debut season it seems they will need to take on the whole of Melbourne to do so. They will face Melbourne Victory in the semi-finals of the A-League Finals Series - after the Dark Blues defeated Western Sydney Wanderers in their Elimination Series tie.
Melbourne City and Western United, two more of Victoria's finest, face off in the other semi and will await Auckland in the Grand Final should they advance. They may as well line up the Storm, the Hemsworths and the Minogues if the Black Knights need any more Melbournians to slay in the coming weeks.
Speaking of celebrity clout, the Wellington Phoenix will be taking on the sportumentary juggernaut that is the Ryan Reynolds-Rob McElhenny owned Wrexham FC on July 19. The Hollywood bromantics will need to remember their warm layers as It's Always Windy in Wellington, and not even Deadpool can regenerate from a southerly chill.
Auckland United are well on their way to defending their OFC Women's Champions League title. Two wins from their opening two group games have them into the semi-finals in Tahiti with a game to spare.

Tottenham sacks Postecoglou despite winning Europa League

Tottenham fired manager Ange Postecoglou on Saturday, two weeks after he won the Europa League and the club's first trophy in 17 years. Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final, fulfilling his promise that he 'always' delivers silverware in his second season. Spurs also reached the League Cup semifinals but finished a dismal 17th in the Premier League. 'Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties,' Tottenham said in a statement. Postecoglou also released a statement through his agency CAA Base, saying the trophy win 'will live with me for a lifetime'. ADVERTISEMENT 'When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham, my overriding emotion is one of pride," he said. "The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. 'That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream.' Postecoglou was hired by Tottenham from Celtic in June 2023 because he promotes an attack-minded and entertaining style of football. It makes for high-scoring wins and losses. Spurs averaged 3.47 goals per game under Postecoglou in the Premier League (246 in 76 games), the highest goals per game ratio of any manager to take charge of 50+ games in league history, according to statistician Opta. Spurs made a bright start in the Australians' first season, narrowly missing out on a Champions League place by finishing fifth in 2023-24. But this past season saw a major dip in results. Its 17th-place finish was its lowest since the Premier League era began in 1992. Tottenham lost 22 of 38 games and ended the campaign just one position above the relegation places. ADVERTISEMENT It meant that securing the club's first piece of silverware since 2008, while also qualifying for next season's Champions League, didn't save Postecoglou from losing his job. 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond,' the club said. 'This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.' The Europa League trophy made Postecoglou only the third Spurs coach to taste European success, provoking an outpouring of affection from a previously split fanbase. He even produced a mic-drop moment during the victory parade in front of an estimated 220,000 people, when he declared 'season three is better than season two' But Spurs chairman Daniel Levy thought differently and dismissed the man who delivered him a much-craved trophy. Postecoglou said the foundations laid at the club mean it 'should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success'. He thanked his players, his staff and the supporters, and finished his statement with, 'We are forever connected. Audere est Facere. (Tottenham's Latin motto, To dare is to do).'

Tottenham Hotspur sack manager Ange Postecoglou

Photo: JUSTIN TALLIS Tottenham Hotspur have sacked manager Ange Postecoglou, the club said on Friday, despite the Australian guiding Spurs to their first major trophy in 17 years with victory in the Europa League final last month. Postecoglou will leave two years to the day after his appointment. Spurs beat Manchester United in Bilbao to win the Europa League and book their place in next season's Champions League, but a dismal domestic campaign ultimately cost Postecoglou his job. "The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place," Spurs said in a statement. "Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. "At times there were extenuating circumstances - injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph." Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League last season, fuelling pressure on the 59-year-old in his second year at the helm. Spurs finished fifth with 66 points in the Australian's first season, helping them earn a place in the Europa League. Many pundits believed their continental triumph might be a lifeline for the manager, while he sounded hopeful himself, telling delighted fans during the team's trophy parade: "In all the best television series, season three is better than season two." But the club's board, who called it one of the "toughest decisions we have had to make," thought otherwise. "We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon," Spurs said in their statement. "We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future - he will always be welcome back at our home." Spurs were hit hard by injuries this past season, with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Dejan Kulusevski, Destiny Udogie, Dominic Solanke and James Maddison all missing significant time. Brentford manager Thomas Frank and Fulham's Marco Silva have both been linked as potential candidates to replace Postecoglou. -Reuters

Beckham to be awarded knighthood by King Charles

Former English football player David Beckham. Photo: AFP / PUNIT PARANJPE David Beckham will be awarded a knighthood by King Charles III next week in recognition of his football career and his charity work. The former England football captain is set to be named in the King's Birthday Honours List, according to the BBC and other sources. Other sporting figures who have been awarded the title include Beckham's former manager at Manchester United, Alex Ferguson, and British tennis great Andy Murray. The Sun newspaper said he would take the title of "sir" and his wife Victoria, a former member of the Spice Girls pop group, will be known as Lady Beckham. Beckham played 115 times for England as well as for a list of high-profile clubs including United and Real Madrid. He is currently the president and co-owner of US team Inter Miami and co-owner of Salford City, who play in the fourth tier of English football. The 50-year-old, who has long been in the running for a knighthood, was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2003 - a lower award in Britain's honours system. Victoria later received the same award for services to the fashion industry. David Beckham was last month named in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential leaders in philanthropy. He is an official ambassador for The King's Foundation, supporting its education programmes and "efforts to ensure young people have a greater understanding of nature" and has been a UNICEF goodwill ambassador since 2005. Beckham is understood to have been on the verge of receiving a knighthood after helping London win its bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. But UK authorities placed a red flag on his nomination due to his involvement in an alleged tax avoidance scheme, according to previous reports. He was subsequently cleared. In 2017, British newspapers printed details of leaked emails in which Beckham criticised the honours system and the honours committee, according to the BBC. A spokesman for Beckham said at the time that the emails were "hacked", "doctored" and "private". - AFP
