Peter Vermes is out at Sporting Kansas City manager after 16 years
The MLS club announced Monday that it 'mutually agreed to part ways' with Vermes after nearly two decades and with Sporting KC chasing its first win since mid-September of last season.

Kerry Zavagnin was appointed interim head coach.
Vermes became the club's technical director in 2006 before being elevated to head coach in 2009. The member of the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame ranks third on the all-time MLS list with 203 regular-season wins.
He is the only person to win the MLS Cup as a player and a coach with the same team — he led Kansas City to the 2000 title as a central defender, then coached the team to the 2013 championship.
'It would be hard to list all of the people I want to thank after 20 seasons in managerial positions at Sporting Kansas City,' Vermes said. 'I am thankful to everyone, especially ownership for giving me the opportunity of being a steward of this club for the past two decades. I wish the club nothing but the best in the future.'

Vermes led the club to 11 playoff appearances and four first-place finishes in the regular season. The club also won U.S. Open Cup titles in 2012, 2015 and 2017. Last season, the team reached the U.S. Open Cup Final but finished with an 8-19-7 record for its third straight losing campaign.
Vermes' final game was Saturday, when Sporting KC fell 2–1 to FC Dallas, bringing them a fifth loss in their first six games of the 2025 season.

Luis Suarez opens up about scoring struggles, playing with friends, his future
Luis Suarez has never been shy about sharing his feelings, on or off the field. The 38-year-old Uruguayan forward and Inter Miami star is known for his fiery personality, no matter how major or insignificant the game. He throws his body and soul into every play and argues with referees. He lets teammates know when he is dissatisfied with errant passes. That passion for the sport is a key reason Suarez is one of the most lethal strikers in history with 507 goals over 841 games during his career. He also is extremely self-critical, and nobody is more aware of his scoring struggles this season than him. Last season, he was an MLS Golden Boot finalist with 21 goals and nine assists in 30 games. This season, with 10 games to go, Suarez has six goals and 10 assists. Two of those came in the past three games, against the Los Angeles Galaxy and Pumas. Suarez's grimaces with every missed shot and was extremely forthcoming speaking with reporters on the eve of Wednesday's Leagues Cup quarterfinal between Inter Miami and Mexican club Tigres. 'Obviously, on a personal level, being a forward, one wants to be involved in goals and help the team as a goal scorer, and I know I can do more to support the team,' Suarez said. 'Sometimes these circumstances happen in football, where you have a bad stretch. But there are moments where I am helping the team, I am helping the club grow, and that gives me a sense of calm.' Suarez has been playing professionally for 20 years and learned to drown out the noise from critics dating back to his debut as an 18-year-old with Uruguayan club Nacional. He said he never lost confidence, even when he went scoreless for long stretches. 'First of all, you can't pay attention to what people say, especially at my age,' he said. 'Critics don't bother me. There are many players who let criticism bother them, and that's bad for you, your teammates and people around you. You have to surround yourself with people who transmit positivity and support.' He insisted he doesn't obsess over errant shots or missed scoring chances. 'In my debut with Nacional in 2005, the team missed 11 scoring chances and eight of those were mine,' he said. 'I was 18 years old. Imagine, if I let that get me down, I wouldn't have gotten to where I am today. I never listen to the critics. And, I don't buy when people say marvelous things about me, either. 'I just work hard and always try to do the best I can.' He said his scoring drought this season was due partly to his slow start. 'What hurt my performance most this year was the start of the season, after such a long off-season vacation it took some time to get back into game shape,' Suarez said. 'As the games go one, the more you play, you get into a rhythm. I hear people say that when athletes play a lot of games, they have trouble recovering, but that has never been an issue with me. Of course, if there are several weeks in a row with three games a week, like we had during the Club World Cup, you can get exhausted. But for the most part, we love to play, and we can handle a game every three or four days.' Suarez added that he is enjoying life in South Florida with his former Barcelona teammates Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Javier Mascherano, and most recently Rodrigo De Paul, with whom he played at Atletico Madrid. He appreciates the more relaxed lifestyle and increased family time. He is delighted that his children can see him enjoying his job so much but dismissed any suggestion that he and the others are here on vacation. 'This is a beautiful era that we are living together as friends and teammates,' Suarez said. 'We share a lot of history together and we are now in a stage of our careers where each day the end is closer, so you enjoy each day more and we are trying to do our best on the field.' He said he realized after so many years as an elite athlete in Europe that fans don't remember what you did three or four days ago. They focus only on the present. And in the United States, he is enjoying a better work-life balance. But, he insists he is working as hard as ever. There are critics who think we come to MLS to retire or be on vacation, and you all can see that is not true,' he said. 'We have not stopped since we arrived. We are playing all the time. I keep fighting on the field, competing hard. That is in our DNA. We want to win everything. That is what carried us to the top of our careers, and we will keep being that way until we finish playing.' Suarez and Messi played at Barcelona together from 2014 to 2020 and formed one of the most dangerous duos in recent memory. He scored 198 goals in six seasons for the Spanish team and became close friends with Messi. Their families also forged a bond. Along with Alba and Busquets they won the UEFA Champions League and Club World Cup in 2015 and won four league titles. Before joining Barcelona, Suarez had won the European Golden Shoe with Liverpool. Among South American players in history, he ranks fourth with 69 national team goals behind Messi (112), Neymar (79) and Pele (77). He signed a one-year contract extension at the end of last season and is making $1.5 million this year. He said Tuesday that he has not made plans yet for 2026, though he would like to retire alongside Messi, who is expected to sign an extension for next season. 'As for my future, I will see at the end of the season, see how I performed over the whole year,' he said. 'When it comes time to make the decision, you never know. You have plans, sometimes they work out, sometimes they don't. Right now, I am focusing on this stage of my career.'

Dolphins make Matthew Judon's signing official and add cornerback Cameron Dantzler Sr.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins made their signing of Pro Bowl outside linebacker Matthew Judon official Tuesday after working out the veteran the day prior and added cornerback depth by signing veteran Cameron Dantzler Sr. Judon adds another skilled player to an already deep edge rushing unit that includes Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb and Chop Robinson. Phillips and Chubb are returning this season from serious knee injuries, and Robinson is coming off a promising rookie year. Judon had 41 tackles, 5 1/2 sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown in 15 starts for the Atlanta Falcons last year. He played the first five seasons of his career with Baltimore and had a three-year stint with New England. Dantzler was a third-round pick by the Vikings in 2020 and had 149 tackles and three interceptions in three seasons with Minnesota, but he has not played football since the 2023 season with New Orleans. The Saints signed him to their practice squad and he appeared in two games that season. He hasn't played in the NFL since then — instead signing with the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger Cats in 2024. He played for the United Football League's Memphis Showboats earlier this season. Dantzler will compete for a cornerback spot on a roster that lacks a standout star, though the Dolphins have added a couple other veterans this offseason in Mike Hilton Jr. and Jack Jones. Second-year cornerback Storm Duck and rookie Jason Marshall Jr. are also on the roster. Cam Smith, Isaiah Johnson, Ethan Bonner and Kendall Sheffield are among those who are competing for spots as well. ___

LSU's Brian Kelly "bullish" on the No. 9 Tigers as he enters a pivotal 4th season
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU coach Brian Kelly doesn't sound worried about managing expectations as he enters what could be a pivotal fourth season with the Tigers. Not even after a 2024 campaign in which LSU fell short of 10 victories for the first time since Kelly arrived on the bayou from Notre Dame. 'I love what I've seen about this football team and feel that's why I've been bullish on our team,' Kelly said. 'You got to go win the games and execute when you need to execute. But I like where we're at.' When Kelly was signed to a 10-year contract worth about $100 million after the 2021 season, he was expected to have LSU back in contention for national titles sooner than later. Instead, the Tigers failed to clinch a spot in college football's first 12-team playoff last season. After that, Kelly went about ramping up his program's already considerable ability to provide financial inducements to transfer players and high school recruits — starting with his own $1 million donation to the Bayou Traditions football fund. Next came a slew of signings out of the transfer portal to complement a handful of high-profile returning players — a couple of whom could have left for the NFL, but decided they were better off staying in Baton Rouge for another year. LSU has a likely Heisman Trophy candidate at quarterback in senior Garrett Nussmeier, who passed for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdown last season. On defense, they welcomed back play-making linebacker Harold Perkins, who was once widely projected to enter the draft, but decided instead to remain with the Tigers after a knee injury derailed his 2024 campaign. Kelly's compliments flow about each position group, even an offensive line that has lost four veteran starters — all of them taken in last spring's draft. 'I've coached for a long time, a lot of guys in the NFL, a lot of first-round draft picks,' Kelly said. 'I've got a pretty good eye for what an offensive line looks like. This group is going to be really good.' LSU is ranked ninth in the the preseason AP Top 25 Poll and will have a chance right out of the gate to move up. They visit No. 4 Clemson in Week 1, when LSU's Tigers will try to snap a streak of five straight season-opening losses. A better start Kelly asserted that his staff has built much of the offseason around the goal of looking sharper for a Week 1 match-up that would appear to be more formidable than any of the previous five LSU lost. 'If you're just reacting to not having a win in the opener to feeding them chicken wings instead of, you know, steak, then you're reacting in a manner that doesn't give you an opportunity to be successful,' Kelly said. 'We've addressed this in January. We addressed it with the guys that we brought in, and we addressed it in the way we trained our football team. We addressed it in spring ball and then into our offseason.' Going deepNussmeier should have no shortage of speed and talent at receiver. Chris Hilton, Zavion Thomas and Aaron Anderson are the likely starters, with Nic Anderson, Barion Brown and Kyle Parker all pushing for playing time. 'I would be less than honest if I didn't say it's as deep (a receiver group) as I've ever had,' Kelly said, adding that Hilton and Brown Speaker 'can run past anybody.' 'The real deal here is that we're going to get over the top of a lot of defenses with those two guys,' he said. Line items Kelly went to the transfer portal to help revamp his offensive line. He lured Braelin Moore from Virginia Tech to play center, while Northwestern transfer Josh Thompson is expected to play right guard. LSU's lone returning starter is left guard DJ Chester. Sophomore Tyree Adams is expected to take over at left tackle. Second-year player Weston Davis has taken most first-team snaps at right tackle, but has seen some competition from freshman Carius Curne, a top 2025 recruit who is 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds,. Adams calls Curne 'the strongest freshman I have ever seen.' Defensive presence Perkins' return gives LSU two veteran leaders and established play makers at linebacker — the other being preseason AP All-American Whit Weeks. 'Presence is impactful right there,' Kelly said. 'People talk about missing somebody. You know, it's hard to replace great players, but it's even harder to replace great leaders. And those guys lead by example and make a huge difference.'
