KUALA LUMPUR : The authorities have busted a group of four 12-year-olds selling lewd pictures of themselves on WhatsApp, home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said today.
Saifuddin said some of the girls decided to drop out of school as they were making more money than their parents from the sale of their pictures.
He said their activities were uncovered thanks to multi-agency cooperation across several ministries.
'The four of them are just 12 years old but conspired among themselves (to sell the pictures). They had a WhatsApp group with many members – 762 to be specific,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today.
Saifuddin said the case is being handled by Bukit Aman's sexual, women and child investigations division, or D11.
The case also involves the women, children and community development and education ministries, while the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is assisting.
Saifuddin was replying to Sabri Azit (PN-Jerai), who had asked if the home ministry was working with other ministries to tackle the issue of swingers online, which involves married couples sharing partners.

Brazil demands Meta remove childlike erotic chatbots from platforms
BRASÍLIA: Brazil has formally requested Meta to eliminate chatbots that imitate children and engage in sexually suggestive dialogues across its platforms. The attorney general's office issued an extrajudicial notice demanding immediate removal of these AI-generated profiles. Meta's AI Studio allows users to develop customised bots exhibiting childlike language and appearance on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. Authorities condemned the proliferation of bots enabling 'sexually explicit dialogue' involving simulated minors. The AGU stated these tools dangerously 'promote the eroticization of children' through inappropriate interactions. Investigators provided documented evidence of sexually charged exchanges with bots impersonating underage individuals. While the notice carries no penalties, officials reiterated Meta's legal obligation to remove unlawful user-generated content. This action follows Brazil's Supreme Court ruling holding tech firms accountable for harmful material on their networks. The crackdown coincides with public fury over influencer Hytalo Santos' arrest for allegedly exploiting minors through suggestive Instagram content. Santos' account was deactivated after police detained him for exposing adolescents to sexualised situations. - AFP

Saifuddin: Over 100,000 foreign construction workers untraceable after legalisation scheme
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — A total of 100,646 foreign workers holding Temporary Work Visit Passes (PLKS) in the construction sector failed to be detected after the foreign worker whitewashing programme implemented by the Construction Labour Exchange Centre Bhd (CLAB), according to the Home Minister. According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the government will implement measures and punitive actions against employers and foreign workers in the construction sector who commit offences under existing regulations. 'They come in, they hold the construction sector PLKS, but when whitewashing is carried out by CLAB, we cannot find any impact. If they misuse the passes, we will take action according to the offence. 'If their passes have expired, they should have signed a check-out memo and left the country. If they do not leave the country, we will track them down,' he said. He said this at the press conference of the Joint Committee Meeting between the Minister of Home Affairs and the Minister of Human Resources, Steven Sim, on the Management of Foreign Workers today. According to Saifuddin, the matter was revealed following a presentation by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) during the meeting. 'We will see what Act they violated and punitive action will be taken,' he said. Previously, he was reported to have said that applications for foreign worker employment quotas are now only allowed on a case-by-case basis involving three main sectors and 10 selected sub-sectors. He said the decision was made as a result of the same meeting, with the sectors being plantations, mining and construction. — Bernama

Govt files appeal against negligence ruling in Ivana Smit's case
Ivana Smit was found dead on the sixth floor of CapSquare Residence on Dec 7, 2017. (Instagram pic) PETALING JAYA : The government has filed a notice of appeal against the Kuala Lumpur High Court's finding that the government and police were negligent in failing to conduct a proper investigation into Dutch model Ivana Smit's death. Her family's lawyer, Sankara Nair, said the notice was filed yesterday by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) on behalf of the defendants – the inspector-general of police, investigating officer (IO) Faizal Abdullah, the home minister, and the government. 'Our firm continues to act for (Smit's mother) Christina Caroline Gerarda Johanna Verstappen in defending the High Court's decision, and we remain committed to ensuring that justice is pursued transparently and vigorously,' Nair said in a statement. On July 29, the High Court ordered the government to pay Smit's family RM500,000 as general damages and a total of RM600,000 as aggravated and exemplary damages, together with costs of RM100,000. Justice Roz Mawar Rozain said Faizal had 'arbitrarily classified Smit's death as suicide' despite the presence of circumstantial evidence suggesting the possibility of homicide. She also said that no immediate action was taken to arrest suspect Alex Johnson and his wife, Luna Almaz, after a forensic report stated that the man's DNA was found under Smit's nails. According to Roz Mawar, Faizal had attributed the presence of Johnson's DNA to sexual activity with the deceased. The court also noted that another High Court had directed the AGC to instruct the police to investigate the cause of Smit's death in 2019. And despite a judicial directive, the defendants failed to meaningfully comply with this order, Roz Mawar said. She also noted that a task force, which included the investigating officer, had been set up to probe the deceased's death. 'However, the investigation has remained stagnant since 2019.' Verstappen filed the lawsuit on the family's behalf in 2020. Smit, who was 18, was found dead on the sixth floor of CapSquare Residence on Dec 7, 2017, after falling from a unit on the 20th floor. An inquest held in 2018 determined that her death was a 'misadventure'. Upon revision, the court ruled that Smit's death was caused by 'persons known or unknown'.
