Liveline contenders: ‘Crazy levels of speculation' about who will step in to replace Joe Duffy

Irish Times18-07-2025
The departure of
Joe Duffy
from
RTÉ
late last month could serve as a catalyst for a reimagining of the Liveline brand and even lead to an overhaul of the national broadcaster's afternoon schedule, according to sources within the station.
The leading contenders to take over from Joe Duffy as the full-time presenter of Liveline were all tight-lipped yesterday as to whether they are still in the running for one of the most high-profile and highly paid roles in Irish broadcasting.
An RTÉ spokeswoman declined to be drawn on exactly when Duffy's successor will be announced, only confirming that the recruitment process is ongoing, with no announcement likely until the autumn.

The Irish Times understands that senior management are actively considering a major reboot of the Liveline brand, rather than simply slotting in a replacement presenter.

A shake-up of the afternoon schedule is possible, although there has been no confirmation that it is a done deal. Talk of any big changes to the line-up is purely speculative.
Katie Hannon
, who has served as Duffy's most regular stand-in over recent years and has had high-profile full-time roles across television and radio, remains the front-runner to take over.
Her Monday night television show Upfront was recently cancelled by RTÉ – a move which led to speculation that it would free her to take on Liveline in a permanent capacity.
However, when making the announcement about the show's cancellation, the broadcaster played down the timing, saying it was connected to a change in strategy and well-publicised financial pressures, and nothing to do with the departure of Duffy.
Philip Boucher Hayes
, the host of Countrywide who is very highly regarded by senior executives in Montrose, has had a range of high-profile roles on radio and television over the last two decades. He has also been a regular substitute Liveline presenter over recent years.

Colm Ó Mongáin
is also said to be in serious contention for the hot seat. Boucher Hayes has already presented the programme for two weeks this summer, while Ó Mongáin has been the stand-in this week.
Another candidate being talked about in at least some quarters is the current host of the 9am-10am slot,
Oliver Callan
, although he is a fairly recent arrival at radio centre. He is performing very strongly in his current slot.
None of these four responded to queries from The Irish Times yesterday.
'RTÉ will run a process over the coming months to appoint Joe's successor, with an announcement expected in the autumn,' was all a spokeswoman for the broadcaster would say.
Other contenders in the frame amid what one RTÉ insider described as 'crazy levels of speculation' include the two Drivetime presenters,
Sarah McInerney
and
Cormac Ó hEadhra
, while the bookies have also suggested former Today FM presenter Dermot Whelan as a long-shot for the role.
Whoever does take on the job will be paid significantly less than Duffy, who, until his departure at the end of last month, was the highest earner at the national broadcaster.
Figures released last year showed he earned €351,000 for his work there, significantly ahead of the next-best-paid broadcaster
Claire Byrne
, who was said to have earned about €280,000.
RTÉ director general
Kevin Bakhurst
, who earns €250,000, has made it clear that he will establish a salary ceiling
at the organisation
at the €250,000 level.
Joe Duffy has left Liveline - but who will replace him?

Ursula Jacob says daughter Bridín has adapted to big sister life perfectly

Ursula Jacob, the Sunday Game star, has shared that her daughter Bridín is taking to her role as a big sister like a duck to water. The Camogie icon and her hubby Brendan Cruise were over the moon to welcome their second child, a boy named James, just before Christmas, which meant a bustling household in Wexford. Reflecting on her career being celebrated on the telly, Ursula looked back at her remarkable achievements. Ursula told RSVP Live: "It was a lovely Christmas. It was a bit hectic in some ways with lots of sleepless nights, but things have settled now and we're getting there. "Bridín adapted to big sister life perfectly and she is so affectionate and gentle with him, which I was a little bit surprised by. "To be honest, we feel really blessed and we couldn't be any happier." Ursula's glittering Camogie career was recognised by TG4 GAA show Laochra Gael earlier this year as she looked back at her incredible club and county All-Ireland wins with Wexford and Oulart–The Ballagh. She said: "I remember getting the call initially and I was half in disbelief. I played with Wexford and Oulart–The Ballagh for more than 20 years and I just saw myself as a Camogie player. I never saw myself as a 'Laoch' or an iconic player, or anything like that. "I got on with what I was doing. When they asked me if I would be interested in taking part there was no hesitation, I found it to be a huge honour. "Laochra Gael is an iconic show and it's part of our GAA season every year. We all check in to see who is being featured. TG4 and the production company do it so well. "They got to know me and my family so well during the filming process to portray me in the best light possible. "I have never really looked back and reflected on my career in the in-depth detail I did on this show. It was a lovely way to look back at my career in a way I have never done before." Ursula couldn't believe how emotional she got as she broke down on screen. She said: "I was doing interviews on camera for about five hours and I cried about three or four times. "I wasn't emotional in a sad way, it was more about looking back at the incredible memories I had and feeling so lucky about what I got to achieve with Wexford and Oulart–The Ballagh. I was also thinking about how my family was there through it all." As a mother of two one special moment stood out for Ursula. The RTÉ pundit said: "One thing that really stood out to me was when we went to Crumlin Children's Hospital the day after winning the All-Ireland finals with Wexford. "The minute I started talking about bringing the cup to the hospital the tears started flowing. It resonated with me that I'm now a mother and if anything ever happened my kids." RTÉ could face ‘staff rebellion' if Ryan Tubridy returns after repaying €150k,

Former Late Late Show host says he made payment 'without condition' There are mixed feelings among staff at RTÉ as to whether they would welcome the return of Ryan Tubridy. RTÉ confirmed on Friday that the former presenter has repaid the organisation a sum of €150,000, which he received as part of a controversial payment deal made in 2020. Speaking to the Sunday World, a source in RTÉ radio said there could be a mass rebellion among staff if he returns to Montrose. 'The general feeling is he was right to repay that money and he was foolish to have taken it in the first place,' the source said. 'In terms of coming back, the feeling ranges from 'it's still way too soon' to 'there would be mass rebellion from the staff'. Former RTÉ presenter Ryan Tubridy. Photo: Colin Keegan News in 90 seconds - 10th August 2025 'Some feel that although it might be unfair that he became the face of the whole RTÉ scandal, it was taking the money and a lack of judgment over how he responded to it by refusing to accept any responsibility that got him there.' The source said there is also a general feeling among some of his former colleagues that Tubridy 'would love to come back to Ireland full-time', but they said they 'would be very surprised if RTÉ agreed to have him back this soon'. 'It will be RTÉ director general Kevin Bakhurst's decision and he did leave the door open at the time.' A second radio insider was damming in their assessment: 'RTÉ should have their heads examined if they are considering bringing him back, but nothing would shock you in Montrose. 'Ryan Tubridy's issue is not familiarity, everybody knows him for the right or wrong reasons: the issue is whether he can get over the scandal in the public's eyes.' They added that 'the listenership in his old RTÉ Radio 1 slot has grown since Oliver Callan took over, so the audience don't seem bothered he's gone'. Tubridy left RTÉ following weeks of controversy relating to the organisation publicly under-reporting payments to him. In a statement on Friday, RTÉ said it received the payment via Tubridy's solicitor. 'RTÉ welcomes the payment and would like to thank Ryan Tubridy for making it,' it said. In a statement issued on behalf of Tubridy, he said: 'Earlier today, I made a payment of €150,000 to RTÉ. I made this payment through my solicitor, without any discussions with RTÉ — or with anyone acting on their behalf — and without condition.' Last month, Tubridy announced his engagement to his partner Dr Clare Kambamettu, after a jeweller in Galway leaked the news. The radio and TV presenter broke the news on his Virgin Radio show, joking that 'the cat had been removed from the bag'. Before Tubridy confirmed the news, the jeweller shared an image on social media of the broadcaster with Ms Kambamettu outside the store, prompting speculation, which was later confirmed when it was revealed that the proposal had happened in the west of Ireland. The couple were recently spotted out and about mixing with Tubridy's former RTÉ colleagues at Joe Duffy's leaving party.
