Thomas Tuchel snaps back in blunt interview as England fans turn on manager
England boss Thomas Tuchel claimed he gave Ivan Toney more than three minutes to save the Three Lions before they were beaten by Senegal as he criticised aspects of his side's performance
Thomas Tuchel snapped back when quizzed on his decision to hand Ivan Toney three minutes at the end of England's loss to Senegal - claiming the striker was given longer.
The German saw his side meander to a win over Andorra at the weekend, with Harry Kane scoring the only goal, but his problems deepened as Senegal became the first African nation in history to down the Three Lions with a memorable win in Nottingham - which saw the home crowd again boo their team.
Despite opening the scoring at the City Ground England were pegged back, conceding a third deep into stoppage time. They were 2-1 down on the hour but Tuchel rang the changes, bringing off Harry Kane, yet only introducing his other striker in the final moments.
Toney has been prolific in Saudi Arabia but wasn't used at the weekend and then only given a matter of minutes on Tuesday night. Tuchel took issue with the reference to a three-minute stint as his decisions were put under the microscope.
He told ITV: "It was more than three minutes. I think Ivan is a specialist for these situations, we created a lot of chances with Morgan Gibbs-White, Ebs [Eberechi Eze], Morgan Rogers and with Jude [Bellingham] in fluid positions. I think Ivan is the strongest when we have a lot of balls into the box, and that was the case so we got him ready at 80 minutes."
When the camera panned to the official holding up the substitute board for Toney to come on the clock had struck 87:01 - meaning the interviewer's question was valid. There was five minutes of added time, but that wasn't known at that point.
Given the lack of time available Toney struggled to have any impact and instead saw Senegal break and score a third through Cheikh Sabaly. Tuchel made wholesale changes to his team for the clash on Tuesday night, but that failed to get the results he wanted.
The German said: "Yeah of course, it's a disappointing result. Not sure if we did not deserve a little bit more result-wise. Felt a bit frozen, not active enough for a long time over the match. We defended quite well for long periods in the first half and then our best period came when we were 2-1 down. We conceded the first two goals - very easy goals, we need to defend better.
"The reaction was good after we were down. We suddenly were more active, more free, more fluent, more aggressive. We had big chances to equalise."

Liverpool handed chance to complete Wirtz swap transfer as new target emerges
Liverpool are pushing hard to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and a door has now opened that could help to push through the move for the German playermaker Liverpool have been handed a prime chance to complete their record move for Florian Wirtz, with Bayer Leverkusen growing interested in one of the Reds' players. Wirtz has emerged as their top target for the summer window. The playmaker has starred over recent seasons, playing a key role as they won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double last year. But with only two years to run on his contract, Leverkusen are ready to sell. They are demanding a high price though, with Liverpool having failed with two bids so far. A deal does finally seem to be closing in though, with Leverkusen expected to be paid a package in the region of their asking price. The German side have already sold Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool earlier this summer. While Wirtz appears to be on his way over to Anfield, Leverkusen are eyeing a move the other way. If Liverpool were to agree to sell the player Leverkusen are chasing, it could help to push through the move for Wirtz. But it would involve Liverpool U-turning on their current stance. According to Sky Sports Germany, Leverkusen are interested in signing Jarell Quansah. It is said that 'concrete talks' have begun between the two clubs, though an agreement has not yet been reached. While Leverkusen are exploring other options, Quansah is understood to be 'high on the list'. The 22-year-old has another four years to run on his current contract, with Liverpool currently not looking to sell him. The Reds could be tempted into letting him go, though it would take a bid in excess of £40m. Leverkusen's current transfer record is the £27.1m signing of Kerem Demirbay from Hoffenheim in 2019. Though he claimed a regular starting spot during the 2023/2024 season, the campaign just gone was much more difficult. He was subbed off at half-time of the opening game, going on to start just four more games in the Premier League. Boss Arne Slot insisted he is a fan of the defender, but admitted he still has work to do on his game. Slot said last month: "He has all the qualities and he is already shown that to me - but also to you - to play for this club. "But the biggest part of us winning the league is of course consistency and that is the most difficult part for a younger player to get that as well. Jarell is fast, strong and comfortable on the ball. He has every ingredient a centre-back for this club should have. "Now the last parts should be consistency in his performances. To play in this team you need to be really, really, really good and he is competitive to the other ones. But he was maybe a bit unlucky that the other ones stayed fit throughout the whole season. "They have so much consistency in their levels. Jarell has had consistency as well but one moment can change the perception of a game. One moment can also lead to us losing or winning a game of football."

Liverpool star believes Florian Wirtz arrival will force him out of Anfield
Liverpool have been busy in the summer transfer window and are desperate to bring Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz to Anfield next despite the club demanding £126m - and Luis Diaz believes the German's arrival will spell his end Liverpool star Luis Diaz is "convinced" Florian Wirtz's arrival at Anfield will spell the end for him, with the Colombian forward "determined" to join Barcelona this summer. Diaz joined Liverpool from FC Porto for around £37million in 2022 and he has largely been a success on Merseyside. He's netted 41 times in 148 appearances and arguably had the best campaign of his career last season by scoring 17 goals in all competitions as Liverpool won the Premier League. But the 28-year-old is about to enter the final two years of his contract with the Reds and there have been fears he could leave in the near future, with Barcelona strongly linked with bringing him to the Nou Camp. It comes as Liverpool continue negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over playmaker Wirtz, with the German side wanting £126m for their star player. The Reds have already had a number of bids turned down - including one totalling £114m - but are hopeful of wrapping up a deal soon for a talent they believe could transform the club and be part of their midfield for years to come. And according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Diaz believes Wirtz's signing will lead to his own exit. It goes on to say that Diaz is "only thinking about playing for Barcelona next season" and wants to capitalise on the La Liga side's interest. Diaz also "does not feel appreciated by Liverpool" and believes he might not have many chances to seal a transfer to a team he supported as a child. Liverpool boss Arne Slot will be keen to keep Diaz and play him alongside Wirtz after starting the Colombian 28 times in the Premier League last season. The Premier League champions have already made two signings after snapping up Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen for around £30m, while keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has joined from Valencia for £25m. Trent Alexander-Arnold has left for Real Madrid, meanwhile, while Caoimhin Kelleher has left for Brentford in a £12m deal - and now Liverpool chiefs will be keen to ramp things up in their pursuit of Wirtz. Liverpool remain confident of getting the deal over the line but they might have to break the bank to seal Wirtz's signature. It could lead to financial complexities and potentially even swap deals, with Leverkusen reportedly keen on the likes of Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah.
