A new battery can generate electricity using bacteria

PARIS : Researchers in China have developed a completely new form of bio-battery based on bacteria, capable of generating its own electricity and recharging itself for several cycles.
This major breakthrough in miniaturised bio-batteries was developed by researchers at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenzhen University. Their research is published in the journal Advanced Materials.
This innovative bio-battery uses electroactive bacteria encapsulated in an alginate-based hydrogel to generate electricity. These living hydrogels are 3D-printed and can therefore be customised.
For the moment, it's a very small device (20 mm in diameter and 3.2 mm high), but it works. Thanks to the bacteria's metabolism, the bio-battery can recharge itself for up to 10 cycles without any external energy input.
The battery stands out for its sustainability and low environmental impact, using no critical raw materials like cobalt or lithium, or toxic components such as organic electrolytes.
In fact, it is ideally suited to potential applications in medical devices, such as implants.
Researchers have demonstrated, for example, that this bio-battery could be used for sciatic and vagus nerve stimulation, enabling very precise control of bioelectric stimulation and blood pressure signals.
This approach could pave the way for innovative physical therapies, even if they are still currently a long way off.

PETALING JAYA : What drives someone to become a doctor today when the pressure is high, the systems are complex, and the path is anything but easy? For Dr Nicole Gan Wei Wei and Dr Angus Ong Qi Chwen, it was the desire to serve. One chose the hospital frontlines, and the other took a path into global health research. But both journeys began with the same foundation: Taylor's University's Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme. Training ground for clinical confidence The MBBS curriculum unfolds in two phases: a strong scientific foundation in the first two years, followed by immersive clinical rotations in the final three years. Students train at accredited teaching hospitals and healthcare centres, and by Year 3 are certified as First Responders with essential emergency skills. 'The clinical postings helped me grow into someone who could work under pressure and still focus on delivering safe, quality care,' said Gan, now serving as a junior doctor in the Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G) department at a public hospital. Nurturing doctors who understand the person behind the illness Medical training at Taylor's University goes beyond diagnosing symptoms; it is about understanding the multifaceted lives of patients. Students engage in rural health outreach, urban clinics, and simulations that emphasise empathy, cultural competence, and communication. 'When we did outreach in low-income communities, I realised how many people did not understand basic health terms. It changed how I explain things to my patients now: always in ways they can relate to,' Gan shared. These are the qualities that a doctor retains long after training, and it makes all the difference in how care is delivered to patients. Career paths as unique as the graduates themselves After graduating in 2021, Ong took an unconventional path by becoming a health research associate. Since then, he has co-led a global digital health study and contributed to several clinical trials to improve chronic disease management. During his internal medicine posting, Ong followed the care of an elderly woman with multiple chronic conditions. Her repeated hospital admissions were primarily due to low health literacy and limited access to primary care. 'This experience revealed how social and structural factors profoundly affect health outcomes. It also sparked my interest in preventive care, digital tools, and community-based strategies to support patients beyond hospital walls.' Meanwhile, Gan continues to deepen her clinical experience and plans to specialise in paediatrics. For her, the hospital is where she can make the most difference. Associate Professor Dr Ganesh Ramachandran says the MBBS programme integrates scientific knowledge, clinical skills and humanitarian values. A programme designed for a changing world Taylor's University's comprehensive MBBS programme aligns with the practice of modern medicine, emphasising evidence-based and empathetic care. It supports students preparing for international medical licensing examinations through multiple e-learning resources and instructional methods, promoting independent and lifelong learning, while fostering resilience and leadership. 'We aim to produce well-rounded physicians who are competent, compassionate, and globally minded,' said Associate Professor Dr Ganesh Ramachandran, Head of the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Taylor's University. BEIJING, Aug 15 — The world's first-ever humanoid robot games began today in Beijing, with over 500 androids alternating between jerky tumbles and glimpses of real power as they compete in events from the 100-metre hurdles to kung fu. Hundreds of robotics teams from 16 countries are going for gold at the Chinese capital's National Speed Skating Oval, built for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The games include traditional sports like athletics and basketball, as well as practical tasks such as medicine categorisation and cleaning. 'I believe in the next 10 years or so, robots will be basically at the same level as humans,' enthusiastic 18-year-old spectator Chen Ruiyuan told AFP. The country is already the world's largest market for industrial robots, official statistics show, and in April, Beijing held what organisers dubbed the world's first humanoid robot half-marathon. Chen, the spectator, told AFP he was about to begin studying automation at university. 'Coming here can cultivate my passion for this field,' he said. 'My favourite is the boxing, because... it requires a lot of agility and I can really see how the robots have improved from before.' Malaysia's private healthcare sector is grappling with rising medical inflation and potential structural changes as discussions advance on the adoption of a diagnosis-related group (DRG)–based hospital payment system, according to insights from a recent meeting between CIMB Securities and Datuk Dr Kuljit Singh, President of the Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia (APHM). Private hospitals currently cater to about 30% of Malaysia's patient load—funded primarily through self-payment, personal insurance, and employee benefits—while the public sector supports the remaining 70%. Dr Kuljit highlighted that Malaysia's healthcare quality remains on par with, or better than, many ASEAN peers, sustaining the nation's appeal as a medical tourism hub. Medical Inflation Above Global Average Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) data shows that medical inflation hit 15% in 2024, surpassing the global average of 10% and the Asia-Pacific average of 11%. Key cost drivers include the adoption of advanced medical technologies, rising medical supply costs, manpower shortages, and overall inflationary pressures. Between 2021 and 2023, claims in the Medical and Health Insurance/Takaful (MHIT) segment surged 73%, outstripping the 21% growth in premiums. Claim frequency more than doubled to 25 per 100 policyholders in 2023 from 11 in 2018. In response, BNM has capped annual premium increases at 10% until the end of 2026, with hikes staggered over three years. Dr Kuljit cautioned that prolonged premium caps could prompt insurers to tighten reimbursement terms and limit hospital or treatment options, potentially curbing investment in private healthcare. To mitigate rising claims, private hospitals are offering negotiated discounts to insurers, which in turn lower out-of-pocket costs for insured patients compared with self-paying patients. Exploring DRG to Curb Costs The proposed DRG system would replace the traditional fee-for-service model with fixed prices for treatments based on case complexity and industry benchmarks. APHM is working with the Ministry of Health to collect and standardise data for a private healthcare DRG database. However, implementation challenges remain due to the lack of a universal healthcare financing framework and comprehensive private-sector data. Globally, DRG models are largely confined to public healthcare systems, with limited adoption in private healthcare. Dr Kuljit noted that complications or additional care beyond the DRG package often create billing and coverage issues in private settings. Sector Outlook CIMB Securities noted that KPJ Healthcare Bhd could be more exposed to DRG-related risks, with 98.1% of its revenue derived locally in 1Q25, compared with IHH Healthcare Bhd's 18–21% Malaysian revenue contribution. The brokerage maintains an Overweight stance on Malaysia's healthcare sector, citing its defensive nature, resilient demand, organic expansion, and favourable demographics. IHH remains its top pick with a Buy rating and a target price of RM8.50, trading at attractive valuations relative to historical and regional averages. KPJ is rated Hold with a TP of RM2.90, as its current share price is seen to have priced in recent operational improvements.
