Police have arrested another two suspected hitmen involved in the 2023 murder of Fort Hare vice-chancellor Sakhele Buhlungu's bodyguard.
Mboneli Vesele was shot and killed while inside a vehicle waiting for Buhlungu outside his home in the Eastern Cape.
In total, 12 suspects have now been arrested for the murder.
Two more suspected hitmen have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder of Fort Hare University vice-chancellor Sakhele Buhlungu's bodyguard, Mboneli Vesele.
A third alleged hitman, Siphiwo Jejane, is still on the run, according to police.
Vesele was shot and killed inside a vehicle while waiting for Buhlungu outside his home in the Eastern Cape on 6 January 2023.
National police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, said the South African Police Service (SAPS) published the alleged hitmen's pictures in November last year, and requested the public's help in tracking down the wanted suspects after obtaining a J50 warrant of arrest for Bafana Chiliza, Nkosiyazi 'Dipopoz' Maphumulo, and Siphiwo 'Spijojo' Jejane.
Just over a week ago, on 21 June 2025, police investigators proceeded to Zakkariya Park in Johannesburg to effect the arrests, following intelligence and information from members of the public.
'The SAPS confirms Bafana Chiliza and Nkosiyazi Maphumulo are in custody and will be charged accordingly,' said Masemola.
He commended the investigating team for working tirelessly to apprehend all those behind the killings at Fort Hare University.
'Members of the public play a significant role in assisting the work of the police in apprehending wanted suspects. We thank all stakeholders for playing their part', said Masemola.
Police also thanked the media, social media community and community members for assisting police investigators to track down the two hitmen linked to the murder.
A total of 12 people have now been arrested in connection with the Fort Hare murder.

Major search for man's head paused as police trawl CCTV
A search for a man's decapitated head has been paused as police review CCTV footage to pinpoint the movements of the ex-reality TV star accused of his murder. South Australia Police have been searching for the head of Julian Story, 39, after his dismembered body was found by authorities called to a unit fire at Port Lincoln on June 19. Police allege Mr Story was killed about midnight on June 17 and his head was removed during the dismemberment. Tamika Sueann Rose Chesser, 34, a former Beauty and the Geek contestant, has been charged with his murder after a court revoked an order suppressing her identity on Friday. A police search for Mr Story's head has spanned Port Lincoln reserves, parks, bushland, the ocean, pier and bay areas and involved state emergency service volunteers, water police, divers and local patrols. CCTV footage of Tamika Chesser But investigators on Tuesday said the intensive search had been put on hold while police turned to reviewing a significant amount of CCTV footage to find other locations of interest. Authorities are appealing for any footage the public can share with police to progress their investigation. "Police are trying to track Tamika's movements in the week of the murder, particularly between midnight on Tuesday night and the report of the fire at 3.30pm on Thursday," SA police said in an update. "Major crime detectives have released images of the clothing she was wearing during this time in the hope that it will jog people's memories." Police were releasing details of the "horrific" crime as it was vital for the family of Mr Story to be able to peacefully lay him to rest, Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said. "We know that Tamika did not drive a vehicle and regularly walked around the township of Port Lincoln," he said. "We are appealing to anyone who can help us to identify Tamika's movements to please contact police." Police found Mr Story's body after firefighters were called to a Flinders Highway property to investigate reports of a blaze. Chesser, who police said had been in a relationship with Mr Story for several months, was arrested on June 19 after Mr Story's body was found at the couple's home. She was known to walk through back streets and parks in the Port Lincoln area with her dogs. She appeared by video link in court on Friday while being held under order at a forensic mental health facility. Lifeline 13 11 14 beyondblue 1300 22 4636

Inmate fatally shoots North Carolina officer before being caught in stolen vehicle, sheriff says
A federal inmate escaped from custody at a medical clinic in western North Carolina and fatally shot a detention officer with his own gun Monday, then fled in a stolen vehicle before being captured in another county, a sheriff said. The inmate had been taken to an orthopedics office in Murphy for undisclosed treatment when a scuffle began. The inmate took the officer's weapon and shot him, Cherokee County Sheriff Dustin Smith said at a news conference. The inmate ran into the parking lot, jumped into a vehicle that had just arrived and took off. The inmate was later apprehended in Macon County, nearly an hour to the east, Smith said. Smith said the inmate, Kelvin Simmons, 48, will be charged with first-degree murder. The detention officer was identified as Francisco Paul Flattes, 56, a four-year employee of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. Smith said Flattes' wife also works for the county detention center. Another officer suffered injuries unrelated to the shooting and was recovering, the sheriff said. 'This has been probably one of the worst days of my career,' Smith said. Emergency personnel in Clay County had alerted Macon County deputies that the inmate was driving to their county on U.S. Route 64, authorities said. Simmons' vehicle was stopped and he was detained after a short standoff. There were no injuries at the scene. Smith said Simmons was already being held on bank robbery charges along with an October 2024 escape.

Bushiri's former landlords demand R2.4 million over lease dispute
PPS Property Fund is pursuing fugitive pastor Shepherd Bushiri for R2.4 million in legal costs following a breach of lease agreement for his ECG church. Court action follows breach of lease agreement for his ECG church building. Bushiri fled to Malawi in 2020, violating bail conditions on criminal charges. Fugitive pastor Shepherd Bushiri faces fresh legal troubles as landlords of his controversial Enlightened Christian Gathering Church (ECG) building seek a writ of execution against his assets to recover R2.4 million in legal costs. PPS Property Fund has filed an application to compel Bushiri to pay the cost of the lawsuit following a breach of lease agreement dispute that has been unfolding before the Johannesburg High Court since May 2024. The dispute arose when the company initially approached the Master of the High Court in Johannesburg seeking a ruling to attach Bushiri's known property in Blue Hills after he could not pay more than R1 million when their lease agreement with him turned sour. This led to them obtaining a court order to wind up Bushiri's estate for breach of agreement, but the company is pursuing parallel actions for legal costs. Shepherd Bushiri shall be liable to pay the costs of the legal action without deduction or set-off and free of commission and bank costs as follows: consecutive monthly payments in the amount of no less than R2.4 million. Legal document In its initial application, the company stipulated that Bushiri failed to make payments and that this was a breach. 'Our endeavour to collect the undisputed indebtedness has a protracted history involving a variety of execution attempts, as well as diligent and persistent engagement with Shepherd Bushiri Ministries. As such, in an attempt to expedite resolution in the quest to avoid further proceedings or liquidation proceedings, all such attempts and engagement have proved to be of no avail,' reads the initial application. They further highlight that Bushiri was aware of the defaults that were communicated to him and of the process needed to remedy the situation. 'He is commercially insolvent insofar as he is unable to settle his debts to creditors as and when required to do so. The respondent is unable to make and conclude management decisions, as he is required to do. His conduct presents a total disregard for the interests of creditors and, particularly, the claim of the applicant as underlined in these proceedings. We have exhausted all reasonable attempts and efforts to engage him and provide him with a fair opportunity to settle his indebtedness towards us,' reads the document. The company also states that it seeks a winding-up of Bushiri's assets as a primary measure to recoup its losses. Bushiri and his wife, Mary, fled South Africa in 2020 while out on bail for numerous criminal charges. Despite being granted conditional release, they violated their bail terms and left the country under unclear circumstances. They were later located in Malawi, prompting South Africa to formally request their extradition.
