Inmate fatally shoots North Carolina officer before being caught in stolen vehicle, sheriff says
The inmate had been taken to an orthopedics office in Murphy for undisclosed treatment when a scuffle began. The inmate took the officer's weapon and shot him, Cherokee County Sheriff Dustin Smith said at a news conference. The inmate ran into the parking lot, jumped into a vehicle that had just arrived and took off. The inmate was later apprehended in Macon County, nearly an hour to the east, Smith said.
Smith said the inmate, Kelvin Simmons, 48, will be charged with first-degree murder.
The detention officer was identified as Francisco Paul Flattes, 56, a four-year employee of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. Smith said Flattes' wife also works for the county detention center.
Another officer suffered injuries unrelated to the shooting and was recovering, the sheriff said.
'This has been probably one of the worst days of my career,' Smith said.
Emergency personnel in Clay County had alerted Macon County deputies that the inmate was driving to their county on U.S. Route 64, authorities said. Simmons' vehicle was stopped and he was detained after a short standoff. There were no injuries at the scene.
Smith said Simmons was already being held on bank robbery charges along with an October 2024 escape.

NJ man fatally shoots girlfriend in East Orange, leads cops on chase in Delaware
A New Jersey man fatally shot his girlfriend and then fled to Delaware, leading officers on an hour-long car chase before he was finally captured, authorities said Monday. According to police, Darian Ficklin, 29, fatally shot 44-year-old Shalamar Brown at a home in East Orange on Sunday night and then immediately fled the scene, the Daily Voice reported. Brown was found suffering gunshot wounds to the chest, abdomen and thigh, investigators said. She was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where she was pronounced dead. Ficklin meanwhile made it all the way south to Delaware in the wake of the shooting. Delaware State Police spotted him Sunday night, but he sped away and led them on a lengthy car chase, reported. Ficklin then drove back into New Jersey and was eventually captured by New Jersey State Police in Camden County. He has since been charged with first-degree murder and multiple weapons offenses, according to News 12 New Jersey. Sunday's night incident was not the only case of deadly domestic violence in New Jersey in June. Fernando Mercado, 42, fatally shot his girlfriend, Claribel Torres, and her 10-year-old daughter Evangelina Velasquez at their home in Hamilton on June 5 before dying by suicide, according to police.

Texas man admits to killing missing American Airlines flight attendant: Investigators
TARRANT COUNTY, Texas (KFDX/KJTL) — A Fort Worth man has confessed to killing and dumping the body of a flight attendant near Bowie who has not been seen or heard from since March 2025, police say. After being seen on video dragging what appeared to be a lifeless body from his home, Dennis William Day, 66, allegedly admitted to strangling Rana Nofal Soluri, 47, an American Airlines flight attendant who had lived with Day for roughly the past year. According to police documents, Soluri was reported missing by a coworker on June 11 after not being able to get in touch with Soluri since March 19, when their text chain ended abruptly mid-conversation. Soluri had been on a leave of absence for a minor surgery, but was expected to return to work on March 31. She never returned. Police documents stated that on May 8, officers were dispatched to Day's residence to tow Rana's vehicle that had been parked in front of the house. They later found that the car had been purchased just one week before Rana went missing. Officers were again dispatched to Day's home on June 10, this time on a welfare check. Police found that the last time anyone was able to verify Rana was alive was on March 21. On June 23, police said they searched Day's home after he consented and found the video clip of Day dragging what appeared to be a lifeless body. Day initially denied any involvement, but then admitted that he 'snapped' after Rana was videoing him and threatened to call the police, according to police documents. Day allegedly strangled Rana on the kitchen floor, then dragged her body into the backyard, where he realized the security cameras were recording him. Then he said he disconnected the surveillance equipment, loaded her body into a trash bin and drove the body near Bowie where he dumped her over a bridge, the documents stated. While Rana's body has not been found, her cellphone did ping in the area, according to investigators. Day was arrested and charged with murder. As of the publication of this story, Day was in the Tarrant County Jail on a $200,000 bond. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
