Inmate named Aidiladha among 54 freed ahead of Aidiladha celebration
BENTONG: A man named Aidiladha was among 54 inmates in Pahang released under the Licensed Release of Prisoners Programme (PBSL), in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha this Saturday.
The 26-year-old had been convicted of minor drug trafficking last year and was sentenced to 14 months in prison.
Having been in and out of prison three times, he was originally scheduled for release this August.
"I'm grateful to be released earlier than expected, but this Aidiladha feels meaningless as my family has remained silent.
"They didn't come to pick me up after my release.
"I'm fortunate to have secured a job immediately upon my release today. I want to begin a meaningful new chapter in life, especially one free from drugs," he said.
He was among the 54 inmates from Bentong and Penor Prisons in Kuantan who were released during the PBSL Ihsan Madani 2025 ceremony, held in conjunction with Aidiladha at the Dewan Perdana, Bentong Prison, recently.
Another inmate, Ayu, 30, was also released under the same programme.
She had been sentenced to 12 months in prison for drug-related offences and had previously served time once before.
Ayu was initially scheduled to be released in August.
"I miss my two children, aged 10 and 13. I can't wait to celebrate Aidiladha with them. I'm sure they miss me too," she said.

Permit applications drop but police to tighten firework monitoring
KOTA BARU: As Hari Raya Aidiladha approaches, the Kelantan police have noted a low number of permit applications from traders intending to sell fireworks and firecrackers - a stark contrast to previous festive seasons. Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said that despite the drop in applications, police would continue to monitor trading activities, especially in public areas such as roadside stalls, markets and night bazaars. "We remind traders with valid permits to strictly adhere to the conditions set. "Non-compliance could lead to legal action, including seizure of goods and possible revocation of permits," he said. Mohd Yusoff also advised parents to remain vigilant and monitor their children's activities during the festive season, especially to prevent accidents involving unauthorised or dangerous fireworks. "Public safety is our priority. While we want everyone to enjoy the celebrations, safety should never be compromised," he said. A check around several areas in the state today found that fireworks and firecrackers were already being sold, particularly in high-traffic spots such as the 24-hour Wakaf Che Yeh night market. Kupang couple's Aidiladha preparations disrupted by surprise snake visitor
BALING: An elderly couple in Kampung Bukit Iboi, Kupang, received a nasty shock last night when a King Cobra slithered into their home as they were preparing for the Aidiladha celebration. Baling Fire and Rescue Station chief Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil said they received a call about the three-metre-long snake at 10.40pm yesterday. He said the team found the King Cobra behaving aggressively and slithering along a brick wall towards the roof vent. Their task was further complicated when the snake hid in narrow roof crevices, making it harder to capture. "Firefighters used specialised equipment to capture the snake, which took about 20 minutes. "The operation had to be carried out with great caution to prevent the snake from escaping," he said today. Zulkhairi noted that from Jan 1 until today, the department has received 200 emergency calls - 50 of which involved snake-catching incidents in the district.
